Finished last week, this is my model of the Rothmans Porsche 956, chassis 001, on its debut at the Pace Petroleum 6 hr race, Silverstone 1982.

According to “Excellence Was Expected”, 956.001 covered 4244 miles in testing before heading to the Silverstone Six Hours, held on May 16th.  With the Bell and Ickx dream team driving, it should have won with ease.  And it would have done but for having to compete for 6 hrs of racing, equalling 1,132 kms, with the Group C fuel allocation for just 1,000 kms.

The base kit is by Starter, with upgrade and detail parts by Robustelli and Renaissance.  I added some extra, minor, details to correctly portray the car as seen at Silverstone.

The transparencies for the windows were a poor fit, so I vac-formed replacements, along with vac-formed headlight covers to replace the rubbish resin items provided in the kit.

Decals are mostly Studio 27, with Le Mans Decals for the stripes on the engine cover and along the flanks.  Paint is Revell enamels.  I had problems obtaining a decent finish initially.  This turned out to be a minor issue with the pressure regulator on my compressor.  Seems to be OK now, thank goodness.

And finally, with a Denizen figure of Derek Bell, painted with Humbrol enamels, and shaded with oil paints.

Thanks for looking.

Another little beauty (or should that be two little beauties?! :) ) emerges off your bench Trevor! Gorgeous 962 956 and a really nicely painted figure of Mr. Bell!

Great work again!

Keith

Edit for stupidity - why did I think it was a 962...?!

You are very kind.  I think "Little Derek" is possibly one of my figures that came out best.

Cheers Keith.  It wasn't without problems, i.e. achieving a decent paint finish, but it turned out OK.

The 1982 Silverstone 6 hour was the first endurance race that I attended.

This car was more suited to the 1000km races which started in 1983.

All the commentary talk during the morning was about the 956 and its fuel consumption.

Whilst it had the performance to outstrip anything else on the track that day - it couldn't race like that for 6 hours without running out of fuel.

It was sad to watch later in the race, when its consumption had been confirmed under racing conditions,  having to drive the entire lap in top gear - to last for the entire 6 hours.

Coming out of Woodcote Chicane at low revs in top gear - unlike other cars, which were racing.

Great model of Derek Bell,  who I watched racing many times.

The race was run for a mixed field of the soon to be finished Gp6 cars, like the Lancia LC1, and the new Group C category.  The Porsche management spoke to the organisers to change the format to 1000kms, but to no avail.  Hence the economy run by the 956.  In his autobiography, Derek Bell said it felt very embarrassing to have to pootle round in top gear - not exactly racing.

Towards the end of the season, Porsche moved from mechanical fuel injection to the new Bosch Motronic system.  This eventually allowed to race with few concerns about consumption rates.

Didn't go to the Silverstone race, but I did see Group C cars in action at Brands Hatch in later years.  Jaguar vs Porsche - they were definitely racing then!

Absolutely fantastic rendition of 001, the next time out was the one, two, three at Le Mans, my one and only visit to the circuit.

I did attend Silverstone to watch the 1000kms many times.

Sorry, I digress... Your build is excellent and a superb tribute to what became for me the ultimate Group C racer.

👍👍👍 🏆

Thanks very much indeed for your kind words.

Yes, the Le Mans 1-2-3 finish (in formation) was the next outing for the Rothmans 956.  001 was also present as the spare car and contributed, in a small way, to the result.  More details when I complete my Le Mans 956 project.

The car looks great,  but I have to say, I think Derek looks even better. - Andy

Thanks very much Andy.  I'm very pleased with the figure.  Painting the multi-coloured stripes around the sleeves and torso was very time consuming, but done in stages and with a great deal of patience!

Wow, very cool, amazing result for such a small scale. Impressive work!

Thanks Davi.

Having built 1/43 models for so many years now, I don't think of them as "small scale" - I tend to think of 1/24, and bigger, as large scale.
