Afternoon everyone.. finally finished my AMK F-14D that has been in the stash for a while and only took me six months to build !! ,  due to my work commitments. Been putting this one off due to the expected difficult weathering techniques that I wanted to try but in the end, pretty pleased with the results. The kit itself is straight OOB and it is huge. I thought this kit had the ability to vary the wing geomatry but you can't. What you can do is choose which position you want and go with that. I chose fully swept due to display issues, or lack of space !!  The kit itself goes together very well apart from where the fuselage slots into the body, take your time and be prepared to use some filler. Nice quality of plastics.

Weathering was what I wanted to experiment with so I tried a black primer and mucked about with some pre weathering effects ( below ). Good fun and I used AK interactive paints. Note though that I had to use their own brand of thinner as everything else just reacted badly. Once I knew this, the paint went on well

After this stage, I just took time and some patience to get the desired results. Decals were nice and crisp but didn't get a lot of time from laying them down to them setting or indeed splitting. May have been my usual heavy handedness  or not enough gloss coat on the model prior to decal application.

Anyway, here she is.. photos just taken on iPhone , indoors and outdoors .

Lovely looking Tomcat, great work.

When I saw the first pictures with the pre weathering effects, I thought ohh another Tomcat weathered ready for the scrap heap. But the end result looks great, worn but not too much.

A lot of detail especially on the small parts. Have a look at the comparison with the Tamiya kit then decide. I’m sure someone has done a comparison build here on BM.

Noted that there was some numbering issues with the decal numbers but nothing that some internet searches and a magnifying glass can’t solve !! 🧐

Certainly a well made kit .. recommend. Enjoy

Truly superb!

Honestly, it seems like the bar is that much higher when an F-14 is the subject.

Outstanding work!  👋👋👋👋

Oh, I've got four, by the way!

Great looking jet, weathering looks spot on. So far I'm impressed with what's in the box on an un built AMK 1/48 Kfir C2.

I'd say you have nailed it. I have a couple of F-14 builds planned and it is the painting & weathering stage that is putting me off.

Just come back to say I have used those AK paints and in my experience their own brand thinner did no thinning at all! 😂 I ended up thinning their paint with Vallejo flow improver. I also like the splatter pebble dash pre shading which for these really well weathered Tomcats is a good idea. How did you get that splatter effect?

Thank you … splatter effect was in truth by accident as I was trying to get the right consistency & air pressure right with the AK paint & thinners and instead of wasting the various mixtures I just treated the f14 like a paint mule !! 🤣🤣

Once I got the right ratio, I then used an even light coat of the Ghost Grey to blend it all in. Gotta say, still prefer Tamiya paints & thinners but lessons learned as they say .

This took me 6 months on and off but stuck with it. Next is the new Airfix Gannet, let’s see how latest generation moulding compares 🤝👍

Great work on that Tomcat, they're an impressive and distinctive plane.
