Marlin Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Hi. This is my second entry to this GB. And it's also a leftover from last years South of the Rio Grande GB that I didn't have time for then. I'll to an F-16D Block 50 from the Chilean Airforce. I'll be using Kinetic Gold F-16D kit, with some nice AM parts. 20240124_203522 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr This kit lacks the enlarged spine, so I'll raid my Polish F-16C/D Kit for these parts. I intend to build mine as a C, so they're free to add to this kit. 20231117_173708 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Quinta 3D decals. 211 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 212 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Decals, the D-version is there, but not shown here. 20231201_150909 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Resin exhaust. 20231201_151019 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 20231201_151011 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Python 5 missiles, I know that Chile don't use the 5's. They've got the 4's but they're very similar in appearance so for modelling these will do fine. 20240123_173834 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And a pair of GBU-10's 20240602_154628 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I hope to end up with something looking a bit like this, but with Amraams and Pythons. https://www.f-16.net/g3/photos/11875 To be continued..... /Bosse 8
Col. Posted January 30 Posted January 30 Nice project plan Bosse. I like the way you're going to cross kit the parts to create this machine and there's plenty of tasty aftermarket goodies in the mix as well 1
Marlin Posted January 30 Author Posted January 30 Thanks @Col., as I've said, we all do what we have to to keep that Guy Down Under @trickyrich happy. /Bosse 2
Wings unlevel Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Nice Bosse. The Chilean Block 50 jets look fantastic, as I’m sure yours will. 👍 1 1
Marlin Posted March 10 Author Posted March 10 Hi. It's high time I start working on my F-16D from Chile. So this weekend I spent more or less of it at the workbench. I've glued the front and aft parts of the upper fuselage together. 094 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Cleared the instrument panels in preparation for the Quinta 3D decals. 095 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Filled and sanded the infamous 12 ejection pin holes in the air intake. 096 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr When the putty had dried I glued the air intake halves together. 097 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And the nose gear wheel bay. 098 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've also glued almost all sub assemblies together. 099 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I'll be using an aftermarket exhaust on this one, filling and trying to sand 4 ejection pin hole on each of the exhaust petals is not my cup of tea. This one is from Katran, of which I've never heard of, but the resin looks great. 100 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr It took me about an hour to separate them from their plugs. I hope I can leave the plug on for the inner most parts, if not I'll deal with that later. 101 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And with that I've official started on my F-16D from Chile. To be continued..... /Bosse 6
Marlin Posted March 27 Author Posted March 27 Hi. I've upgraded my work bench with a new chair. I bought a DXRacer gaming chair in some cool colours. I had the opportunity to break it in last evening and it was quite a difference from my old one. Nice an comfy and I had no problems with my back after a few hours at the bench. 117 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And during the break-in session I continued to work on my Chilean F-16. The air take had dried completely and I glued it in place to the lower fuselage. This is a Block 50 version with the large intake. And that has it own problems; I couldn't get the intake to fit all around. I got a very small gap at the bottom of it. Not a real problem, I actually had to enlarge the gap to get a 0,25 plastic card strip to fit. 118 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I clamped it in place to get it to sit right. 119 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 120 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And then it was time to open a new box. Don't worry I'm not starting a new build. 121 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I just had to raid this kit for the spine part. My Block 50 kit don't include it, and I don't need the spine parts for my Polish F-16 since I intend to build it in the C-version. 122 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr It clearly shows that the Polish C/D-version is from the older kit and not the Gold Kit. The plastic is much "fatter" to say and the panel lines aren't as crispy as in the Gold Kit. But I think I can live with this. I just have to check what differs between a Polish spine and a Chilean spine. To be continued..... /Bosse 3
Col. Posted March 27 Posted March 27 Some serious clamping required but so long as that gives a decent fit it's all good 3 hours ago, Marlin said: And then it was time to open a new box. Don't worry I'm not starting a new build. 121 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Aww! Why not? There's always room for another project in this GB
Marlin Posted March 27 Author Posted March 27 18 minutes ago, Col. said: Aww! Why not? There's always room for another project in this GB I've been tempted to add a third one to this GB, but I've got a bit too much on my plate just now. And there are some other things in life that also have to be attended to, other that just building kits unfortunately. But there will perhaps be some more F-16's from me later on this year. I actually have some ordnance for just this Polish C-version coming in the post any day now, and some other thing for another F-16, so I'm planning ahead. /Bosse 1
Col. Posted March 27 Posted March 27 2 hours ago, Marlin said: ..And there are some other things in life that also have to be attended to, other that just building kits unfortunately... /Bosse Sadly this is so but you're are doing well with your two current projects 1
Marlin Posted April 2 Author Posted April 2 Hi. Spring has finally come to my neck of the wood. And my morning walk from the underground to work is a bit more pleasing now that the Cherry blossom trees in Kungsträdgården has started to bloom. 💮 128 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The pasted weekend Anne and I was in our cottage. And the lovely spring sun called for a bottle of wine on the patio. ☀️ 😎 127 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And we got some of the wild life to visit us. 🦊 125 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 126 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Back home I've stocked up on somethings I need for my F-16 builds. Some very nice decal from Zeus projects to stencil the under carriage. Each sheets gives you enough for two aircraft, and I bought three sheets. 132 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And from the same manufacturer some canopy seal decals for two aircrafts, and I got three sheets here as well. 133 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And I thought I had some Pitot tubes as home, but I can't find them, so I got 6 new sets. 134 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And new F-16 has landed in the stash. I'll of course going to build a Ukrainian one at some stage. 129 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And I also got some aftermarket decals for it. 130 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Actually it wasn't the decals I was after, it was the PIDS+ pylons I wanted. Kinetics kit only comes with the slightly older PIDS version. 131 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Yesterday my wife was visiting our daughter and spent the night with her at her flat. So I ordered pizza for me and my youngest son and then we had a boys own evening with him building his What-if Swedish Air Force F-15EX and me working on the Chilean F-16 138 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've gotten the air intake in place. 139 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And the small gap I had in the nose has been taken care of with some plasticard and some liquid sprue goo. 140 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've also glued the main under carriage bay in place, and I've also filled the holes for the belly pylon with some round plasticard. 141 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The enlarged spine is almost done. 142 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr It was a bit to handle when you have to look through two kits and see what parts I could use from the Polish C/D bo and still build a C version from it. But I think I got there in the end and now have a kit that will be a C-version and have a enlarged spine on my Chilean D-version. 143 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 144 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And that's it for now. To be continued..... /Bosse 6
Col. Posted April 5 Posted April 5 Good progress, more lovely aftermarket goodies, and a nice week. You are living life well Bosse The cherry blossom isn't out here yet so you are a little ahead of us in north east Scotland. 1
Marlin Posted April 11 Author Posted April 11 Hi. I'm continuing on setting up my work table as the dream bench I always wanted to have. I've got some more things added to it that I think will come handy. First a new light frame for my mobile phone so I perhaps can take better pictures. 20250408_172811 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The stand came with the light. 20250408_173424 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And you you can adjust both the temperature and the brightness of the light. And it's re-chargeable with a regular USB-C charger. And when I'm not using it for photos I have some additional lighting on my bench which will come handy when working with stencils etc. 20250408_173436 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And speaking of stencils I got me a new nifty pair of scissors from Japan. 20250408_174047 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr It's quite sharp, and come with it's own stand. The stand is just regular plastic so I think I'll paint that in Gold or something so it really stands out on my bench. 20250408_174807 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've also got a new resin saw from Dspiae. 20250408_174820 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The protective cover also doubles as an extension for the handle. 20250408_174831 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 20250408_174842 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr My youngest son keeps borrowing my little hand drill, so I bought a new one, also from Dsipae. 20250408_174935 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Nice red box to keep it safe, and it comes with a set of drill bits and a small Allen key to fasten them to the handle. I also bought a spare set of drill bits because I know I'll break some of them. 20250408_174946 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I also found some other resin saws online that looked handy to have. 20250410_101318 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr They comes with six different blades, and I set the three I think I'll use the most in the handles. 20250410_171831 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've now thoroughly cleaned my airbrush and it's working again. So things are starting to happen on my Chilean F-16. I've primed and painted the cockpit and put in the Quinta 3D decals to it. The front office. 145 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I'm really sold on this 3D decals, so much better than I'm ever going to paint them. 146 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Both holes done. 147 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr But something is wrong. I can't get the cockpit to fit inside the fuselage. It's a bit to wide at the back. 148 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 149 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr It could have something to do with the side panels in the back? 150 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The aft bulkhead seems to have the wrong profile as well. I think the easiest way to get it to fit is to change the profile a bit on the aft bulkhead. It's a bit strange that the new Gold kit has this fit issue, since as I remember it the older version didn't have them. 151 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I'll work on this issue and we'll see after the weekend what comes out of it. To be continued..... /Bosse 4
Marlin Posted April 11 Author Posted April 11 Newsflash ! I've found a source for Derby Missiles. Paveways Models in Chile does some 3D printed ones. https://pavewaymodels.com/product/derby-set-of-4/ I've just put an order in for two 4-packs of missiles So when they arrive I can arm my F-16 the way I want. Shipping from Chile to Sweden can take up to a month, but I'm not in a hurry, my kit isn't glued together yet. /Bosse 1
Marlin Posted April 14 Author Posted April 14 Hi. What a sight I was met by this morning on my usual walk through Kungsträdgården from the underground to work. The Cherry Blossom trees are in full bloom now. 156 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 157 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And the weekend wasn't that bad either, Anne and I had some lovely spring weather at our cottage. 158 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 159 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And it was so nice and warm that we could actually have our dinner on the patio. Nothing fancy this time, only "Pyttipanna", i.e a fry up of potatoes, onions, ham, bacon etc. normally eaten with HP sauce and/or beetroots. But I'm allergic to beetroots so I have mine with a bit of horseradish instead. But it was nice to finally sit outside and enjoy a meal. 160 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Yesterday when we got home I continued to work on my F-16's. I got the control stick and throttles in the cockpit on the Chilean one. 161 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr While that paint was set to dry I glued the PE fins in on my Python V's I've got an older set from Reskit where the front fins are in PE, and not the newer ones where everything is 3D printed. 162 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And about an hour later I'd all 10 fins in place on both of the missiles. 163 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I then started to get the fuselage halves together. First I sanded the back bulkhead for the cockpit to get it to fit properly in the fuselage. But the fuselage halves to fit. I got a rather nasty seem in the middle of the fuselage. 164 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I turned out to relate to several things. The strengthening plate where the front and back upper parts of the fuselage meets is a bit to high. The exhaust part interfere with it, so I sanded that down a bit. But there are also several ejection pin marks on the inside of the fuselage that are in the way. But rest assured I'll will make the parts fit eventually. Strange that this newer Gold version has these fit issues when the older version don't have them. 165 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've also stocked up on some more nice things to have on the workbench. Some make-up micro brushes to detail painting and weathering. 166 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr A set of six locking tweezers which will come handy when painting etc. 167 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And some smaller and more pointier Q-tips which I think I need to clean my airbrush with. 168 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And that is it for now. Next update will come after Easter, because on Thursday morning I'm taking 4/5th of the family to London for some sightseeing and relaxing. And on Easter day I'm going to finally see Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds in Concert at Londons O2 arena. To be continued..... /Bosse 3 1
Marlin Posted April 27 Author Posted April 27 Hi. I've made some more progress on my Chilean D. I got a rather nasty gap around the lerx line. It too large for putty, so out with some plastcard strips and fill. 169 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've cleaned up the wing seams. 170 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And i've glued the spine to the top of the fuselage. 171 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The Lerx seams has been cleaned on both sides. 172 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 173 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr The spine has some fit issues, but I Think tht comes with the fact that the spine is from the older kit, and not the Gold kit. I've glued it i stages, but I think that I'll have to use some putty in some places. 174 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 175 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr To be continued….. /Bosse 6
Wings unlevel Posted April 27 Posted April 27 Looking good, Bosse, I’ve had similar minor fit issues as you’ve had. 1
Col. Posted April 28 Posted April 28 It's a pity this new kit still exhibits some fit issues but you're getting on top of them well Bosse. 1
Marlin Posted May 5 Author Posted May 5 Hi. I've now filled the gaps on the spine with liquid sprue. 176 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr 177 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I've also added a second airbrush to my collection. After some serious pondering I settled for Harder & Steenbeck Infinity 2024 CR Plus, Two in One edition. So I got both the 0,28mm and the 0,44mm needles in the same box. 178 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr I also bought the service kit for it. 179 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr Yesterday I tested it for the first time with some RAL 6001 on the GBU-10's I'll use in this build. 180 by Bosse Persson, on Flickr And my first impression of it is that is a very different tool compared with my Grex TG-3 Much more sensitive and you can do much smaller areas with it. And it turns out that I'm a thumb trigger person. I'll use the trigger with my thumb, and use the index finger as support. I don't know if that is just for now when new to this tool, or if going to be like this forever. And it feels like starting over all again, perhaps not from square one, but two.... To be continued..... /Bosse 5
Marlin Posted May 5 Author Posted May 5 It sure is @exdraken Werner. But that why we do this..... /Bosse
Col. Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Your new airbrush looks to be a rather gucci bit of kit and it seems you're going to have lots of fun with it Bosse
Marlin Posted May 5 Author Posted May 5 Thanks @Col. I like the red colour, it matches all those Dspiae tools I've collected over the year. /Bosse
