Popular Post MOK61 Posted January 29 Popular Post Posted January 29 This is my first proper model build since the 1970s and with hindsight choosing the largest British aircraft of WW2 that I could think of was probably not my brightest idea! But, almost two years after starting, with a lot of lessons learned and I like to think some new model building friends acquired along the way, here we are. WiP, if anyone is interested: On 18th December 1941 Short Stirling L6086, named MacRobert's Reply and coded LS.F of XV Squadron, based at RAF Wyton, was loaded with four 2000lb AP bombs and a single 250lb GP bomb to mark their fall, for a daylight raid against the German warships Gneisenau and Prinz Eugen in the harbour at Brest. The crew were credited with a near miss on the Gneisenau and with downing a defending Bf109 fighter. For this the pilot, PO Peter Boggis, received the DFC. Here is my depiction of their aircraft about to be bombed up. Unfortunately the corner of the house with the least background clutter also has the worst light and my photographic skills are not great. But I could not resist... Thanks for looking. Onwards and Upwards! Murray 76 5
Heather Kay Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Well worth the perseverance, or was that just dogged determination? The diorama is brilliant, too. 1

Thanks Heather, too stupid to know when to quit I reckon. The board is getting a bit battered already. I might have to sweet talk my other half about the need for an A2 artist's portfolio case. Longhorn Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Great looking Stirling, a nice comeback to the hobby after 50 years out! 1 1

Farmerboy Posted January 29 Posted January 29 The shear size of the Stirling is captured brilliantly by your model, that’s one to be proud of, great work. 1
Moskiman Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Nice job! The Airfix Stirling was the first big kit I got given as a Christmas pressie as a youngster back in the early 70s and I remember making an almighty horlicks of it! I have another Stirling in the stash now (a bit like you, was away from modelling for a long, long time) and I hope my second go will end up looking as good as yours. 1
georgeusa Posted January 29 Posted January 29 A very nice build of the Italeri Stirling. You did quite well on the build and the finish of this aircraft. The diorama you made for it is excellent. I can't wait to see other builds from you if this first one is so good. Thanks for sharing. 1

Thanks FB, I cannot begin to imagine what the new aircrews thought looking up at the cockpit and engines towering over them. 4 hours ago, LorenSharp said: That's an absolute Stunner. Great Job! Yep, that was back in the day when the tractor and bomb trolleys came with the kit, I remember it well. Which one have you got stashed? The Airfix is showing its age and the Italeri is an interesting mix of excellent details and silly mistakes. 2 hours ago, 12jaguar said: She's turned out great Murray, Mk IV next?🤣 Thanks, John. Stop it, you'll get me into such trouble! I could easily be tempted by either a MkIV with a Horsa, or a MkIII. I think I said in the WiP that I used to work with a chap whose father was severely injured when a cannon shell from a night fighter exploded in the cockpit of his MkIII. I'll need a bigger shed than yours at this rate! 2 hours ago, Sluffer77 said: That’s a lovely build. You’ve done a great job. Cheers, Sluffer77. I do feel like I am back in the groove. If only I had the leisure time and energy I had the first time round. On the plus side I have a little more cash and a lot more patience these days. 1 hour ago, georgeusa said: A very nice build of the Italeri Stirling. Thank you, George. I would be the first to admit that, mostly, the build improved as I went along. To begin with I got sucked in to adding scratch-built details that were nowhere near fine enough, but I learned...slowly. Onwards and Upwards, my friends.
R T Fishall Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Murray, that's looking really good! I'd say the end result has well rewarded all the effort and ingenuity that has gone into it. The little diorama display really displays it to best effect; it's a marvelous ensemble! Great stuff. Cheers, Richard. 1
Karearea Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Brilliant brilliant work. Both the final piece and your dedication to the craft are a real inspiration. Congratulations on a stunning Stirling. 1

I would never have made it this far without the help and encouragement of the BM collective. Thanks! 1
Dunny Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Murray, This has been a most entertaining journey and it's great to see the final result. Your attention to detail has been most impressive and the final product in all its glory certainly reflects that. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Roger 1

Gimme Shelter Posted February 1 Posted February 1 excellent A 50 year break you say? Well, if I can turn out a model that nice after a 50 year break then I'd be very pleased myself too - mind you I'd only be 107 at the time ! What's not to like about it, even if you have taken a 50 year time out on the hobby Tip top 1

I was feeling anxious about posting a RFI, but I'm starting to think that maybe I can do this after all. The next big challenge is going to be airbrushing for beginners! Murray
woody37 Posted February 2 Posted February 2 Brilliant. The base really adds to the imposing perspective of this beast. 1
Knight_Flyer Posted February 2 Posted February 2 It's definitely a decent looking model, an excellent result for a come back build. I took over a month to complete my comeback build and that was for a Chipmunk 1

Can you begin to imagine a how long I would have taken with a 1/48 Stirling? 1
