MeneMene Posted January 27 Posted January 27 (edited) Hello everyone- As I've put my Draken back in the box while i wait for a new canopy, I've started work on what seems to be a pretty big project. This is a later boxing of Great Wall Hobby's F-15E, which seems to have a number of corrections from the first release. I also have quite a bit of aftermarket to play with, some of it more necessary than others. Haven't decided on a particular aircraft, but the markings that come with this boxing are all late 2018 on deployment in the Middle East, so I will be building a relatively modern Mudhen. With all this to do, I'm going to be keeping everything in bite-sized manageable installments. First up is the cockpit. Principal aftermarket is a set of Quinta 3D decals. Here are the core parts of the cockpit and nose wheel bay, removed from the sprue and with various area of relief sanded off to pave the way for the instrument decals. The Quinta set is a thing of beauty, however the shade of grey is a little too bright. Not the end of the world, hopefully some weathering and the shadows within the cockpit will make it not too obvious. This is only a first pass, there are a few more details to add to each instrument panel. Here is the cockpit in very early days. So far it just has a wash and the 3D decals applied, there's more painting and detailing to do. Does anyone know what the empty tray is to the right of the pilot's seat, just in front of the divider bulkhead? Some sort of storage receptacle for goggles/maps? It doesn't look quite right to my eye as-is. I also inspected the seats that come with the kit and they should probably be replaced; a set from Aires is en route. Most of the wheel well will be hidden from view, as the door is only open when the gear is transiting or manually lowered for maintance; for normal operations it remains shut on the ground. For this reason I didn't go overboard in detailing it, just painted a few cables and dirtied the area up with a dark brown wash. As always, comments./corrections./kudos are always appreciated. If anyone has better images of the mystery tray next to the pilot, please let me know. Edited January 27 by MeneMene 6
The Scotsman Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Looking forward to seeing the thread develop....lovely kit this GWH F15E...did one a while back with the Heritage Scheme Good luck with your build.
MeneMene Posted Monday at 04:38 PM Author Posted Monday at 04:38 PM I finished the core of the cockpit, and added the side walls. I test fitted this assembly in the halves of the nose section. Fit seems pretty good, will need a slight bit of filler along the central seam but nothing too bad. I'm holding off on gluing it together pending some final touches to the nose gear bay and while i work out if I need any nose weight or not. The Phase Hangar resin intakes look very nice. They need a bit of sanding and thinning out of the kit parts but nothing too bad. The bulk of the work consists of getting the front sections, modeled in grey resin, to line up correctly. After that the intake trunk and fan assembly fit fairly effortlessly. 2
MeneMene Posted Tuesday at 01:27 PM Author Posted Tuesday at 01:27 PM I cut out the blank plastic and installed the nicely detailed Hypersonic JFS starter exhaust. Looks the part. I'm still working on the intakes, the front sections that will be most visible need the print steps removed. 4
bar side Posted Tuesday at 09:25 PM Posted Tuesday at 09:25 PM Looking great so far. That cockpit is quite something- mainly Quinta stuff? I assume from the box she will be an LN bird. I don’t live to far away and head up to the fence to watch them sometimes. I guess you have plenty of reference nice pictures already Will be following with interest

Yes cockpit surfaces are Quinta decals. 4 hours ago, anders1970 said: Is that the cockpit out of the box? great detail. I've used a set of Quinta 3D decals to do the heavy lifting on the intrument panels and cockpit consoles 1
