woody37 Posted January 26 Posted January 26 It's been a while since I finished an airliner, although started several including this one last year! Using 26 Decals lovely decal sheet, this is the second Monarch 720 I've built, inspired by a trip on one as a nipper. I struggled getting the cheat line around the forward fuselage double compound curves (something I've never really mastered) so chose to paint them instead. It was doing this where the build stalled as on the first attempt, the yellow strip was too thin and so a kilometre of masking tape later this week, it's more accurate! MRP Signal yellow is a pretty good match for the Monarch colour, so this was used along with their black primer for the black cheat line, white and light aircraft grey. Photo's of these aircraft often showed them to be quite dirty, so this is the look I tried to create using pastels. Cheers Neil 51 3 4 2
Alex1978 Posted January 26 Posted January 26 WOW...what a beauty. I esp. love the paint pattern on the wings.Spot on. Alex 1
Vesa Jussila Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Looks really good. i like the colour variation in wings. 1
David H Posted January 26 Posted January 26 That looks beautiful. I think Roden did a good job at getting the basic shapes right (with the exception of the straight 720, JT-3 engines that look more like JT-4s) though the wings are remarkably barren of surface detail. I'm not a fan of the engine pylon-wing integration but i've ranted about that before. The AA window decals do wonders. Thanks for posting. Nice to see the 720B getting some more love. 1
bobsyouruncle Posted January 26 Posted January 26 That’s a beauty. I always had a job as a kid wondering what that lower stripe colour was (black). I was convinced it was dark green, but then again I’m colourblind. Remember seeing them at Luton. 1
Epeeman Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Really lovely work on your model airliner with a great standard of finish. I'm curious about how well this Roden kit (and other airliner kits in their range) goes together? I ask as I build a lot of the WW1 aircraft range and these always need a lot of work to get together. Regards Dave 1

Regards Dave Cheers Dave. It's the first Roden kit I've built. It's been sat in a box since last year so can't remember exactly, but don't remember any issues. Fitting the engines to the wings was a bit fiddly, but then every 707 I've made is with those thin pylons. I've got a VC10 part started too, really need to go back and finish that too! 1

These are the 26 Decal windows that come with the Monarch decals, really bring it to life, especially with a clear windscreen. Yes, I remember the pylons being fiddly and I'm surprised at least one engine never broke off with all the painting and repainting! I can't remember which aircraft I flew on unfortunately. There are a few subtle variations between them from studying photo's. Cheers Neil
NorbertBu Posted January 26 Posted January 26 Very convincing paint job! I especially like the wings, with these different shades. 1

Marcello Rosa Posted January 27 Posted January 27 I have built their EC-135, which shares a lot of parts with the B720, so I appreciate how filling and sanding effort has gone into getting this great result. Congratulations! 1
Viking Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Beautifully done 720 Neil, the metallic tones are superb, and the weathering really brings it to life. Cheers John 1
Sky Keg Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Neil, I`m starting to like civil airliners after seeing your`s here. A perfect combination and application of colors. Mike 1
kev67 Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Hi Neil Never knew you done airline kits , always thought you were a WW2 bomber modeller so a first for me 1
Gimme Shelter Posted January 27 Posted January 27 That's a really nice kit you've turned out there - convincingly dirty and not overdone (which is where I always fall down) As a builder of civil kits myself, I can really appreciate all the hard work, masking and intricate work you have undergone - in particular the work that would have been involved where the upper flight deck glazing meets that lovely yellow strap line. I always enjoy seeing other modellers civil kits finished work, but I always look deeper into what the builder has had to undertake to achieve the desired end result as every different type of aircraft and its chosen livery demands different techniques of masking specific approaches as to how to paint and build up to the desired end result. Excellent models like this one helps me diagnose how I would have achieved the same end result. This is quite brilliant, I love it. 1
Dave Slowbuild Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Beautiful finish Neil, the weathering, the colour variations, lovely. I recently bought the set of pastels that you recommended in your Beaufort thread, and I’m itching to give them a go on my current build! 1
Airbusboy Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Really lovely representation. So nice to see some weathering applied to a civil airliner as opposed to a clinically clean paint job. 1

michael301757 Posted January 27 Posted January 27 Really nice, lovely job. Brings back memories of many hours spent at Luton in the 70,s Cheers Michael. 1

Thanks, their simplicity in parts count don't really translate into easy builds do they? With military subjects, weathering and detail can draw the eye away from imperfections, no such luck on an airliner! One thing I've noticed is that I forgot to add the wing tip lights! I'll get them done this weekend. On 1/27/2025 at 1:24 PM, Dave Slowbuild said: Beautiful finish Neil, the weathering, the colour variations, lovely.
