MiG-17 "Fresco" | Dragon | 1/72
Egypt, 1973

EEdo2GR.jpg

Finished this one on 10/21/2024.  This was a kit I had in the stash for quite a while.  I found the "Nile Valley" camo scheme online a few years ago and really wanted to paint it on this MiG-17 kit.  I took the decals from a Fujimi MiG-21 kit, and I got the Arabic characters on the side from another decal sheet I had lying around.  I had to hand paint part of one of the characters... but I'm not sayin' which one! :) Lots of good reference photos for this particular plane are here and I used those to complete this one.  The only inaccuracies are in the Arabic characters on the side.  They are too large and should have outlining in dark red on one side of the characters.  I didn't trust myself to paint the red outline.  Oh well.  Otherwise I'm very happy with how it turned out.

The rockets came from the Airfix MiG-17 and I had to modify those pieces considerably.  First, they were molded as one piece, so I had to cut the plastic out between the top rocket and the bottom rail.  Second, they had no fins, so I had to make those from scratch and I did an adequate job, but it was hard to make them perfect because they were so small.  I also had to scratch build pylons for the bombs, which came from a KP Su-25.

Paints: Mr Color C044, Nakajima gray green and Hataka RLM 70 on top, Hataka RLM 65 on bottom.

Very nice work!

The 'Nile camo' looks great and I'm very impressed with your dedication to making all those fins for the Sakr rockets - I took one look at what Airfix had moulded and just thought "nope"! Well done 👍

Lovely. What an exacting job the rocket fins were. Well done. And the camo scheme looks perfect! that kit has been on my wish list for awhile, and your build is the perfect inspiration for me to get cracking!

Thanks! The rockets were a pain, but they surprisingly didn't take as long as I thought they would.  Even so, they did test my patience. :D

Hello

This is very nicely done. When I built an Egyptian MiG-17F I did not dare this camouflage as I was not sure to have a stiff hand with the airbrush.

Yes the Airfix rockets are too crude and I used rockets from a Special Hobby Buchon.

Beautiful Mig, and a great paintjob.  I don't know if I would have the patience for the fins of the rockets..

Thank you!  My dirty little secret with the camo is that I used paper masks, which sit nicely in place with a couple of well placed pieces of tape in the centers, but still give a slightly feathered look.

Thanks!  It was at about the limit of my patience.  Especially when I would knock them off while handling...

I like it a lot.  Thanks for the explanation how you got such a nice feathered camouflage.  Fantastic model.
