Redstaff Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 Seeing as lately I've been on a bit of a Tyrrell roll with the Yamaha 023 and the Honda 020, I thought I'd continue the theme with the last one in my stash, the 003 driven by Jackie Stewart from 1971. I've had the kit for years and it will be pretty much oob as I've got other 1/12 kits with all the bells and whistle detail up sets, plus the fact I probably will have 2 kits on the bench with the Heller GB running at the same time and it would be hard even for me to mix up the bits of a 1/12 F1 car and a 1/24 Le Man's Bentley 😅 Ian 😀 15

bianfuxia Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 This one will be cool - welcome aboard! Out of interest roughly how big will that model be when completed? I've never done a 1/12 anything, I struggle to estimate the finished size. 1

Richard Humm Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 It's 345 mm long according to the Tamiya catalogue. 2

According to the instructions in the box it is 317mm long x 167 wide and 63 high, which in real terms is 12.5" x 6.5" x 2.5" Ian 👍 1 1
Bobby No Mac Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 It's such a nice little (well, not so little in 1/12) race car. Probably my favourite Tyrell. 1 1
CliffB Posted December 31, 2024 Posted December 31, 2024 It'll be nice to see this one coming off the shelf and being built 1
Redstaff Posted January 8 Author Posted January 8 Nearly there now Bench and surrounding area cleared as I'm going to need a fair bit of space 😉 Zero Tyrrell blue and semi gloss black ordered from Hiroboy ready for the start Ian
Angus Tura Posted January 8 Posted January 8 I am looking forward to this, Ian. Great subject. Alan 1
Redstaff Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 Little bit of progress today. Front and rear wing bits and airbox assemblies made up, plus a bit that was floating around and needed a sink hole filling. With a big kit like this I'm going to treat them all as little models In their own right. Tamiya extra thin bottle to give an idea of scale 😁 Ian 8
Redstaff Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 Not much bench time this week due to being busy at work, but managed to lay some bits out in primer tonight. Funny how much better everything looks when it's the same colour 😀 Ian 9
Redstaff Posted January 20 Author Posted January 20 Had a fairly productive weekend, even though there isn't a lot to show for it. Did some gloss black painting for the airbox and on the engine / gearbox ready for the metallics. Also methodically going through and stripping the tacky chrome plating off a lot of the smaller parts, I know Tyrrells of this era had chrome plated parts, but this Tamiya plating on the smaller parts is awful and toy like, might leave some parts like the long side pipes and roll cage plated, but haven't got that far advanced now. So for the next week or so it's going to be strip, prime, paint and repeat Need to be methodical and do in small batches and organise so I don't mix them up as a lot of parts are very similar looking Ian 6
Redstaff Posted February 5 Author Posted February 5 Not a lot happening here at the moment due to other commitments and work, but nibbling away when I get chance getting bits ready for adding when the time is right like the discs and airbox. Also starting to get the main tub assembled so I can get the blue and decals added and start building from the ground up. Lots and lots of small items in various stages of paint now the chrome has been stripped, it seems like painting the forth bridge 🤣 11
bianfuxia Posted February 22 Posted February 22 This is off to a good start - I built a lot of 1/20 F1 cars in the 80s but I never had this one. Looking forward to your next update! 1
desert falcon Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Nice work @Redstaff and a very organized workspace too I have to say 👍 1

I built a lot of 1/20 ones over the years and have all the tamiya ones either built or in the stash, but the 1/12 ones like this were well out of my league at the time 1

Redstaff Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 Had a few hours this morning before settling down to watch Italy v France in the 6 nations. I managed (I think) to get all that should be blue into Zero Tyrrell blue. Couple of bleeds on the aluminium tub that need touching, then decals and clearcoat. Then I can start adding parts that are already prepped and painted. Ian 😃 10
Yves Paris Posted February 23 Posted February 23 Looking great ! Did you have a gap between the chassis (or tub) and cowling. I'm building this car too and I had to grind the underside lip of the cowling to get a clean joint. 1

Hi Thanks, on a dry run after primer, the fit appeared to be very good, but I've had that before on other kits and had to trim a little in final assembly, so fingers crossed it will be still OK Ian 👍 1
Redstaff Posted February 24 Author Posted February 24 Went to put some decals on last night, but original Tamiya ones are very brittle and yellowed, so decals on order from Indycals, plenty more to do while I wait though Ian 2
Redstaff Posted March 5 Author Posted March 5 Still waiting on decals from USA, but decided to gloss bodywork and start adding bits to it, otherwise it won't be done before the deadline. Heller GB I was going to do after this is looking decidedly like a non starter unless I pull my finger out on this one. I used zero 1K gloss as I didn't fancy the 2K route and it seems to have laid down ok. Might get some more bits added at the weekend before the rugby kicks off Ian 7 1
Redstaff Posted March 9 Author Posted March 9 After a few little jobs around the garden yesterday morning I managed to grab a couple of hours at the bench and finish off the front end, then a little bit of progress on th engine/gearbox assembly. Hopefully another hour or so later on when I get back in Ian 6
