Geo1966 Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 My first entry to the GB will be this beauty. I think I have only built one boat prior to this and that was the Airfix 1/72 Motor Torpedo Boat in the early Eighties. Will certainly add a bit of colour to the display cabinet when finished! Sprue shots, etc to follow. George 14 2
Geo1966 Posted January 2 Author Posted January 2 Ahoy Shipmates and Happy New Year! As promised, the sprue, etc shots: Nice colour instructions. Decals and clear parts look good also. Not too long to wait now. Looking forward to diving in. George 13
Geo1966 Posted January 13 Author Posted January 13 Ahoy shipmates! We have castoff and I’m making good speed. I’ve sprayed the one-piece deck with AK 3rd Gen Dark Sea grey. Airfix say to use a light grey, but looking at reference photos I think DSG is more appropriate. I then hand painted the seats (which are moulded to the deck) in NATO black, followed by a dry brush of DSG. I painted the display screen with some Tamiya Smoke. A rummage in the Flotsam and Jetsam (spares) box produced a blue stripe decal which I cut up to make the harnesses. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) I ran out of decal so skipped the waist straps. No point in going overboard, so it think that will do for the interior. The cabin is in one piece apart from 5 bits at the back. I like the cut of Airfix’s Jib as they been clever by having inserts either side to add the recessed details. The hull consists of 5 pieces which went together nicely, although I did have to use a bit of filler as I had over cleaned up the locating points. The stand is a nice touch as it has been made to replicate what I guess they are transported on when on container lorries. Enjoying this one so with Fair Winds and Following Seas I should get some more done soon. George 10
Marlin Posted January 13 Posted January 13 What a great little project. I might have to get me one of these... I'm taking a seat and will watch the rest of the show with interest. /Bosse 1
Geo1966 Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 (edited) Ahoy Shipmates! Bit more done on this. I masked the upper deck prior to attaching the hull. Maybe i should have done that the other way round? 🤔 I also found a suitable bit of foam to stuff in the cabin. I found when fitting the hull to the upper deck it was a bit off, so i glued the back and tapped it down then later did the same to the front. I did end up with a few gaps, so had to do a bit of filling and sanding along the seams. I have seen a lot of people on BM using pink primer prior to spraying red, yellow, etc. So i thought i would give it a go. I don't use primer as such, but instead use Tamiya XF as an undercoat. As I don't have any pink i went with XF-15 Flesh. For the orange i used AK 3rd Gen Medium Orange. Glad i didn't go for bright orange! 😎 I thought this would be quite a quick build, but there is a lot of detail painting to do as i have now realised. In hindsight i would have left the back of the cabin off as it was a bit of a pain to get the paint in there. I gave it a coat with a brush before spraying. The deck and stand have been given a coat of Vallejo Model Air Dark Mediterranean Blue. Think i should be a bit of a brighter blue, but thats the nearest i have. A nice bottle of a good old Suffolk beer "Adnams Broadside" and some sea shanties is greatly recommended for this build, but i would suggest not having too many of these as its 6.3% 😁 Next up is the potential nightmare of masking up the the water line 😱 George Edited January 22 by Geo1966 10
PieterC Posted January 22 Posted January 22 You did not give us much peace, or chance, in 1672 now did you? Anyway, nice to know that there is a beer to commemorate Sole Bay. Maybe I should try and convince my friends at Friekens to do a 4 Days Battle beer. Very nice lifeboat BTW.
Geo1966 Posted February 1 Author Posted February 1 Ahoy there Shipmates, a small update. Got the hull masked up and sprayed with black. Looks ok, but i am still worried about the white water line decal. I guess if i have it wrong i will be able to touch it up and hopefully not make a mess of it. I've also done the detail painting on the deck, so just about ready for some varnish before doing the decals. George 8
desert falcon Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Ahoy @Geo1966, you are making good progress, nice to see some colors on it 👍 1
Geo1966 Posted Friday at 04:20 PM Author Posted Friday at 04:20 PM Ahoy again Shipmates. The decals are on, but i did have a bit of trouble with the white waterline decal. Nothing wrong with the decals, I just struggled to get it in the right place. After about 30 mins of moving, it around on one side it started to break up, so I went with where it was. I think in hindsight I should have tried spraying the white line. Oh well it looks okay I guess, it’s just that I (and now you) know it is wrong and should be lower at the bow. I have also sealed the decals in with some VMS satin varnish. I tried a test fit of the one piece transparency for the cabin. It fits great, so great it took me about 10 minutes to get it out again! 😂 Wondering whether to do a panel line wash now? Will have a think about that one. Then i need to start putting on the railing and grab handles. Oh and i also need to paint the transparency for the rear steering area (sure that is not the correct naval term ha ha). George 9
Bobby No Mac Posted 18 hours ago Posted 18 hours ago Ahoy Cap'n George, I've just been catching up (err-li in the morning), it's looking fantastic. Nice choice of orange
bianfuxia Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago This has really come along quickly! Your paint work is excellent and here's to Tamiya flesh as a primer for orange!
