I need to get rid of some boxes.

8TQ3L38.jpeg

I've chosen something that should be quick to complete and on which I can test a few things. The model itself seems fine, though it has a few simplifications that will need rework, but nothing too time consuming. Although the rubber tracks are offputting.

I found some nice figurines:

The kit has one big thing to redo, cooling air intakes and coolers are covered but they should be visible, fans should sit at that funny depth:

Based on photos, sans and coolers seem to be bigger versions of those from Leopard 2:

Bcos all of that will be visible from bask too:

Before departure I've managed to make covers for intakes:

Net is steel wire mesh from a railway model shop, fits in a size and a shape. Because I can't use original PE due to that unnecessary rim, it would make more sense if that rim would match rim of cover like I did.

Now when I dealt with SU 122-54 I could as well finish P-47 which I abandoned for no reason just before applying decals. Someday.

Takom, what is this? I'm serious, who approved this?

My version, based on Leopard 2 breech and one photo from museum. A bit simplified because I do not plan to expose them too much.

The barrels also had issues, front parts had weird bulges so I redid them. There is also question what to do with two identical covers.

Frontal slope has very gritty anti-slip, I tried to recreate it with acrylic putty and sand:

A bit of cleanup is necessary, but it looks like it should be. Also I made some insides for the gunner's sight.

Other anti-slips are finer so anti-slip paste is enough:

Finally some hydraulic lines so I can paint and close gun compartments.

This is coming together nicely, also great job on the scratch building. That anti-slip surface looks very nice.

Wasn't going to post so quickly, but I'm effing proud of myself. The fabric seals on barrels were identical on both guns, reasonable as they were from duplicate sprues, but that fact bothered me greatly and I considered resculpting them to make them look different. I'm not good with sculpting organic shapes so I wasn't looking forward to that. I got an idea, what if I cut half of seal from each barrel and swap them?

Well, it worked : ) they even have correct spin on all their folds so win-win, only left is a bit of work with a file and to fill the gaps with putty.

Other QoL improvements: I used magnets to attach model to handle, cheap ferret magnets glued permanently inside, strong neodymium magnets on the handle. Way better than drilling holes.

Other updates, I'm changing kit's bolt heads for printed bolts, kit's heads are on washers, I'm not sure if that's correct but their are too small and will look bad when weathered anyway. Printed heads are bigger and sharper and this time I'm inserting whole bolts into drilled holes which is far easier and cleaner than using superglue.

And some progress on base:

Those figures look small or is the vehicle that large?

Figures are regular size, that thing is just Leopard's 2 size and dwarfs 8-wheelers:

hqPGM4B.jpeg

Which make sense, it housed two 120mm guns and overpowered Leopard's powerpack.

That 8-wheeler in background is South African's Rooikat which I hope will be next after I clean my backlog. Leopard, I don't know, it's full interior kit so it's a too big commitment now.

Colors, I like how it turned out, but I have to brighten it a little.

I've forgotten how to do it or this kit is so unassuming that I can come up with interesting wear and weathering effects. I gave it a bit of wear and added some rough dusting with acrylics, now I’ll even it out with oils.

Also, I transplanted the foam base onto an MDF board.

Nice. Are you going to build the 1-1 version as well?

Gondor

No, I try to avoid similar subjects.

Fixed that plank with bungee ropes

And I was fighting with weathering, I've studied how leopards and other bengerpanzers get dirty, but I still have trouble making it look chaotic but pretty. I managed that with SU 122-54, but that was a long time ago. I should practice more on smaller, simpler kits, otherwise I will have mental breakdowns every six months.

After painting grass and used leftovers on top and front plates, I think I forgot to apply one last layer with highlights when I was painting. I overpainted some dust effects that were too much, I feel it looks better now.

And one thing about these figures, while bodies are very detailed, their faces lack any features, they are worse than plastic casts.

That looks very nice Kalor. Great painting and weathering and the figures and base set it off very well.
