shortCummins Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 So while I’m waiting for Uschi to send me my “wood decals” I’ve decided to build another Eduard Spitfire. This time I’m going to build one of the options from the “Per Aspera ad Astra” dual combo… …this kit offers 12 schemes… I’ve not seen this tri-camo’ version before so I think it'll be an interesting subject… I’m toying with the idea of an “in flight” version, I’ll check my spares box to see if I have ant suitable pilot figures? Next, as “normal”, I’ll be starting with the cockpit until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins) 14 1
2996 Victor Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 An interesting choice there, John, I'll pull up a seat if I may? Cheers, Mark 1
81-er Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 I'm definitely pulling up a pew for this one, John, I've got the same set and that's one of the schemes that made me want to buy it James 2
fubar57 Posted December 16, 2024 Posted December 16, 2024 Love these markings. I notice that Eduard doesn't show the wavy demarcation between upper and lower camo on C⦾3. 1
Biggles87 Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Not seen that scheme before either, so I’m in. Never could resist a Spitfire build anyway. John 1 1
bigbadbadge Posted December 17, 2024 Posted December 17, 2024 Nice choice John, had look at that scheme myself but decided to stick with my usual roundels when I do mine. Lovely kits, looking forward to seeing this one progress. Chris 1 1
shortCummins Posted January 11 Author Posted January 11 After a base primer of Mr Surfacer 1500 black I used Tamiya LP-11 and SMS British interior green for the fuselage interior… …vallejo colours 70.995 German grey, 70.918 ivory and 70.915 yellow was used to pick out different components… …a mix of vallejo 70.814 burnt red and 70.983 flat earth, approx’ 75% 25%, was used for the seat. Next I’ll be assembling and weathering the cockpit. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins) 14
2996 Victor Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Nice work on the interior, John, this is going to be another corker! Cheers, Mark 1
bigbadbadge Posted January 12 Posted January 12 Nice interior detail painting John, looks great. Chris 1 1

Chris thanks guys I've been away from the bench for awhile, Christmas, grand-parenting duties and a sneaky trip away to Cornwall but no I'm back and looking forward to this "unusual" camo'd Spitfire rgds John(shortCummins) 3
shortCummins Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 As I want to have a “closed canopy” I removed the “excess” plastic as mentioned in the instructions… …and added the “closed” cockpit door. I found this pilot in the spares box… …I think’s he's from an Airfix Hurricane?, the plastic certainly looks like its "Airfix" and as I’ve built one of their Hurricanes previously I think this is the unused pilot form that build? The seat and floor were assembled and fixed to one of the side walls so that the pilots arms could be positioned in “more or less” the correct position. Eduard have included parts for a MkI/II, one of which, sidewall, I’ve mistakenly used… …so I’ll have to add some colour to the correct part and double check the destructions as the build progresses! Next I’ll be painting the pilot. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins) 7
shortCummins Posted January 12 Author Posted January 12 The pilot was first given a coat of Mr Surfacer 1500 black primer followed by a “zenithal” highlight using MRP-004 white… …I started with his face, a base coat of vallejo 70.804 beige red was then highlighted and blended with 70.928 light flesh… …his Mae West was paired with 70.915 deep yellow and his leather jacket was first given a base coat of 70.940 saddle brown which was then dry brushed with 71.036 mahogany… …his gloves, boots and flying helmet were painted with 70.872 chocolate brown, his trousers with 70.880 khaki grey, sockets were given a coat of 70.918 ivory, harness straps 70.976 buff, the harness release 305 light rubber and his goggles and oxygen mask 70.995 German grey. Next I’ll be assembling the rest of the cockpit until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins) 11
shortCummins Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 I decided not to “go overboard” with the detailing and weathering of the cockpit as both the closed cockpit and pilot figure will obscure most of the detail? Eduard supply PE instrument panel(s) with this boxing however I’ve decided to use their IP decals in this instance. There are four separate decals for the IP (K1, K2, K3, K4), these are the “peelable” decals so I needed to wait, at least 24 hours, after application before attempting to remove the carrier film… …I added the “outer” decals (K2, K3) first, and then waited 24 hours before removing the carrier film, then the “central” decals were added… The centre decals somehow slipped but as they really wont be seen I’ll live with it this time. Lt John Anderson, the pilot figure, was glued to his seat… …I cut down the control yoke and fixed it to his hand… …and the other side wall and IP bulkhead were attached… …the remaining bits’n’pieces were attached to the side walls… Next I’ll be closing up the fuselage until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins) 11
shortCummins Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 Some PE seat belts, from the spares box, were cut to size and added… …the sub-assembly was fixed to one side of the fuselage… …and then both halves of the fuselage joined. Next I’ll be adding the wings until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins) 15
81-er Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Looking great so far, John. I think there's more than enough detail in there with the pilot filling most of the cockpit James 1
bigbadbadge Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Pilot looking good John , before he grabbed the control yoke, it looked like he should of had a pint in his right hand😉 Should look suitably busy in the cockpit. Great work Chris 1 4
stevehnz Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Not my scale but always good tips & info to be gleaned from a good bigger scale build & this is sure looking like one of those. 👍 Steve. 1 2
shortCummins Posted January 16 Author Posted January 16 After the wing pieces were put together, my only “complaint” is with how the wheel well walls have been engineered in that their too fiddly with too few “positive” location points, don’t get me wrong if you’re careful they go together really nicely, I just think that if they could be moulded in one piece, at least for the “round” wall, then it would be so much easier? The fit of wing to fuselage is exceptional… …the only place were some, minimal, filler will be required is here. A hole was cut to accommodate the stand so that the model can be displayed “in flight”… …the “hole” will be cut and sanded flush later in the build. Next I’ll be adding the wing tips, rudder and horizontal stabiliser. until next time as always, any suggestions, criticisms or comments will be gratefully received. rgds John(shortCummins) 9
2996 Victor Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Great progress, John, it's really looking like a Spitfire now! Your stand socket is interesting - plastruct or evergreen section, presumably? Have you got any pics of the stands you use - I'm struggling to decide how best to do mine. Cheers, Mark 1
fubar57 Posted January 16 Posted January 16 Looking good. I built my wells on the wing and got a nice tight fit around. 5

Cheers, Mark thanks Mark you're correct about the evergreen section, I'll use some "clear" square rod for "the stand" which I'll plug into a wood/MDF base similar to what I did here... I'll add static grass (or similar) on the wood base to add some interest rgds John(shortCummins) 8
