SnøMotion Posted December 28, 2024 Author Posted December 28, 2024 So, I've been doing some bits and bobs of painting, but mainly I'm waiting on the decal/2K clear test results (it's looking very promising at the moment). But I'm now unsure if I actually want the red/orange stripes all the way down the side of the trailer or if I'd just rather have the name/model badges at either end. The other thing I've done is collected some fishing line to use for the electrics on this trailer but also for plug leads in future builds. I also got some braided fishing line that I'm planning to use for the winch cable. I originally got some sliver 'cotton' thread, but it's too bright and also too thin. This fishing line looks just right, except it's black, so I'll need to add some silver to it (shouldn't be a problem). Along with the wich cable, I'm going to need a locator pulley to convert the transverse pull of the winch to a longitudinal pull up the trailer and a 'hook'. I've modelled the components and I think the loop and shackle are the smallest things I've ever done! Here are some renders of the parts. The loop and shackle are modelled as two separate components and I added struts in Fusion360 so I could print them as shown in the renders. I was trying to make the struts as narrow as possible at the contact points, to keep as much detail as I could. As an idea, the main part of the strut is 1mm diameter. It took me 4 goes before I actually got a print and even then only 2 of the 9 I printed were anything more that bare struts. That said, the two I have seem to be okay, although it remains to be seen if they are still separate components. Here's a photo with a Tamiya paint jar for size reference and then a more zoomed in crop. I've started to paint the pulley block but I think I'm just going to dust some powdered graphite pencil on the loop and shackle as paint will be too thick. My plan is to secure the cable around the loop whilst it's still attached to the struts, in the hope that will stop me from losing it!! I guess I could put up some photos of the bits I've been painting... that might be of interest... Thanks for looking Martin 8
SnøMotion Posted December 28, 2024 Author Posted December 28, 2024 Okay, so here's a photo of what I've been painting! We have 'up' and 'down' jockey wheels, the components of the winch (drum, handle, red halves of the 'box'), the 'chocks' that are supposed to lock into the treads of the trailer bed (but don't), the clear parts, the decal test and finally the 'detail up' cable parts from my previous post. (Don't look at the mystery side project in the background, whatever you do! ) I've also decided that the owner of this trailer has moved into the modern age when it comes to winch cables and I'm going to leave it black. Here's what I'm using below and I'll say this: it's quite difficult to cut! 5
SnøMotion Posted December 29, 2024 Author Posted December 29, 2024 You join me again in 'Build Location 2' (the dining room table) where, last night, I added the red/orange stripes to the trailer frame. I'd said I wasn't sure I was going to do this but, once I admitted to myself that I was only saying that because I was worried about messing them up, I got stuck into it and everything went okay. I finished off this morning by trimming a few overhanging bits around the wheel arch allowances, poking the holes in for the running lights to locate and adding the 'BJT' and 'A4 Transporter' badges. I'll leave that now and hopefully clear it tomorrow evening. Here are a few photos of the frame with decals and the bed just resting in place. I added some "matte" wash around the edges of the central wooden section, but it clearly isn't as matte as my clear coat! So I'll clear this again when I do the frame. I've also added the start of some oil drips to this section which I'll finish off with some Tamiya X-19 Smoke once the clear has hardened again. Thanks for looking! Martin 11
Potsie Posted December 30, 2024 Posted December 30, 2024 Amazing progress, All the little details you have created will elevate the standard of the final model so much! 1

Thanks, Grant! I just hope I can get the ‘loop and shackle’ attached to the cable and off the struts without breaking and I can’t do that until I’m glueing the winch to the frame. That’s going to be one of those ‘four things at once’ operations! Martin
SnøMotion Posted December 31, 2024 Author Posted December 31, 2024 Clear coat COMPLETE! I was worried about how I was going to get a full coat of clear on every part of the trailer frame as, unlike a car, there isn't an 'inside' bit you can attach to that won't be seen. When I painted it, I did it in two halves. Holding one half whilst I painted the other. But that would have been a pain with 2K, as I'd have had to mix two batches and get the level of matte the same for each. Then I remembered I'd bought a load of different thickness plastic sheets 'just in case', so I got my scalpel and the thickest sheet and fabricobbled a mount that located in 4 unseen slots in the inner parts of the frame. Photos below: And here it is mounted so no part of the trailer frame is touching anything Just need to give it a few days to cure and then I can start final assembly, I reckon. Thanks for looking! Potsie Posted January 2 Posted January 2 Styrene sheet? How 20th century of you! Where is the 3D printed painting mount? 😁 Stupid jokes aside, this trailer is looking amazing. 2

In this instance, styrene and Tamiya Extra Thin was the most efficient solution, even for me! 2
SnøMotion Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 I decided I'd waited long enough for the clear to cure, so I've added all the clear components, fixed the deck down, added the hubs and wheel arches and the spare. There are still a few bits to do to finish it off, like a bit of wiring and the winch, and it will get a number plate in the end. I've dirtied up the centre section of the deck a bit with some discolouration and some oil stains and I'm fairly happy with that. There are some screw/bolt heads on that section, too, and I want to make them look rustier. It's a bit of a strange kit, really, because some of the 'lights' are clear pieces - like the side markers, tail lights and fog lights - but the front markers are just moulded into the main frame. The reflectors on the little stalks and just below that are supposed to be decals, and I used them for the orange side reflectors, but I ended up painting the red ones on because the decals were annoying me too much. I'll let this brew for a bit now and then I'll start on the winch! I've popped the wheels on and taken some photos with the 'down' jockey wheel in place. Thanks for looking! Martin Here's one with the ramps extended... And a couple with cars on... (I've cleverly blown out the side window on the Skyline so you can't see the nasty glue blob ) 13
HK-500 Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Boy ! This looks so real👍 If it wasn't for the cutting mat , it could stand as a real life one ! Jolly good work 1 1
SnøMotion Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 Thanks, @HK-500! Hopefully it will be better with some road grime on it. Although, I’m not planning on doing that until the Range Rover is ready, too. I’m definitely thinking that, once the tow vehicle and trailer occupant are finished, I’m going to have a go at a simple diorama for the ensemble to sit in/on. Martin 1
SnøMotion Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 4 minutes ago, HK-500 said: Aw, come on ! Can't you scratch a neat gas station ? 😜 No. Actually, the Range Rover and trailer are going to be quite long, so the diorama of a full petrol station would just be too large for me to store. Although, if it was just a hut and two pumps… 🤔 1 1
Bengalensis Posted January 5 Posted January 5 The finish you have achieved on the metal frame and the ramps, and the oil stains, is so good, that I will stick my neck out and add a small suggestion, regarding the centre section. I'm using my own 1/1 scale trailer as a reference and assuming that this trailer also has the centre section covered in the typical red/brownish plywood boards (correct English term escapes me). If so you could reach the next level of finish by adding various longitudinal drag and scrape marks. They always happens and are usually quite visible, they certainly are on my own trailer, despite it not really being abused, just used a lot during it's life and care is always concentrated on the car loaded/unloaded, less on the trailer itself... The winch wire and hook drags along when free, the occasional stuff get caught, the wheel straps are messed with and I've lost count on all walks up and down the trailer... you know. Just a thought... I've never been quite interested in building a car trailer, but your build might have changed that. 1
Keeff Posted January 5 Posted January 5 Superb work! I do like the attention to detail.... hitch-head and pulleys etcetera .... and the weathering effects too! Keith ☺️ 1
SnøMotion Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 Thanks for the suggestion, @Bengalensis. Yes, it is a reddish brown plywood, I believe. I agree, some scrapes would look great. This is my first attempt at weathering and, as with most things, I just got stuck in without doing any research into how to do it I’ll need to learn how to represent scrapes effectively and then I’ll give it a go 1
SnøMotion Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 Thanks, @Keeff! I’m planning to tackle the winch tomorrow, so fingers crossed the loop and shackle hold together! Martin 1
klubman01 Posted January 5 Posted January 5 That looks so good. Great work thus far. Looking forward to seeing the finished article. Trevor
