jean Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Hi everyone, I was unable to finish my Spitfire Mk Vb on time in the Classic Airfix GB. It is unfortunately a frequent occurrence. No panic: the build has just moved into the KUTA. This Spitfire will be finished in 2024, so no pressure. I have just painted the cockpit framing with the inside cockpit color. The primer is next. I will post some photos tomorrow. Cheers JR 4
Jinxman Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 Good to see this one continue - looking forward to seeing the pictures.
jean Posted December 5, 2024 Author Posted December 5, 2024 Hi, at long last the Spit was sprayed with grey primer and the leading edges received some white paint prior to the yellow of the identification markings. Definitely some areas that may need looking at... but nothing too serious. Glad to be pretty much at the paint stage. Thanks for watching. JR 7
jean Posted December 13, 2024 Author Posted December 13, 2024 Hi everyone, like many of us, life is not leaving us a lot of modelling time. Life and SWMBO... But despite huge odds stacked against our hobby, progress is still ongoing... So after masking the yellow identification bands on the leading edge, I have brush painted some azure blue from X-Tracolor. I dislike brush painting gloss paints. Brush marks can be a pain to avoid, and because of being gloss, the drying time can stretch over many days. BUT... because we are having a drought and our temperatures are between 43 and 45 Celsius, day in, day out, the paints are dry within half a day! In addition to the above, this particular tinlet reacts weirdly with turpentine. So I just hope that the next two coats will behave... Here is a photo of the progress: Hopefully by Sunday I will have applied the first coat of dark brown on the upper side. Thanks for watching. JR 6
JOCKNEY Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 Looks terrific mate Great to see you are finding time to torture plastic between tracking poachers, chasing Elephants and cuddling Hippos Cheers Pat 1
jean Posted January 4 Author Posted January 4 Hi everyone, finally painted the first coat of dark earth over the underside azure blue. With a bit of luck, the brown will be finished tomorrow. Then a trip to the big town and back on Thursday,,, The Universe is conspiring.,, Have fun everyone! JR 7
jean Posted January 13 Author Posted January 13 Hi everyone, back from the capital city, and finished the painting of the dark earth. Then I scoured the internet to try and find a photo, even a miserable one, of my chosen subject. I finally found one and after playing with contrasts, lighting, etc, I managed to get a poor but usable idea of the camouflage. Conclusion: the paint scheme on the Xtradecal sheet is pure fiction... Eduard offered the same Spitfire (JK792, SAAF) in one of their kit: even if the paint scheme is closer to the reality, it is a bit iffy in places... So I am glad I found this photo , and even happier that I did not rush headlong into the painting of the camo, as per Xtradecal. More photos tomorrow. Have fun! JR 1
81-er Posted January 13 Posted January 13 I'm intrested to see what you think is wrong with the scheme, as I've got the same set of decals specifically to build this aircraft James

jean Posted January 25 Author Posted January 25 Hi everyone, I have finished painting the dark green and I have just removed the masking tape. So here you are, my Spitfire Mk Vb with all its warts. After I have removed all the paint seepages under the masking tapes, etc, I am confident that the gloss varnish will get rid of the paint brush strokes. At least, it did in the past. Not my best work, but I am sure it will look nice when finished. Thanks for watching. JR 5
jean Posted 9 hours ago Author Posted 9 hours ago Hi everyone, well the KUTA finishes in a few hours... and Life has seen to it that I haven't been able to finish a single planned build. I take it philosophically , and I have enjoyed what modelling time I have been able to snatch. Here are a couple of photos of the model, as it stands this evening. I started decaling yesterday and the wing roundel is still partly creased from the Micro Sol/Set. The X-Tradecal decals are beautiful even if a tad thick, as always. The paint scheme instructions, on the other hand are far from perfect, being mostly fictional. Room for improvement there. I have had several blonde moments during the build: like gluing the antenna mast before the paint work: broken. Or deciding to paint the wingtip lights at the very end: disaster very possible... And then some. Anyway, here are a couple of photos. I am going for a Spitfire Mk Vb Trop of No 40 Squadron, SAAF, hence the orange center of the roundels. Far from my best work, but it will look nice when all finished, which should be at the end of the week. For the benefit of Pat, aka @JOCKNEY, the Etendard IV M will definitely be finished in 2025! Despair not!!! Thanks for watching. Follow up in Build in progress... JR. 5

jean Posted 8 hours ago Author Posted 8 hours ago I see you are counting... Very disappointing. But being a born fibber, 2026 and 2027 are not out of the question... My favorite quote from Arnie: "I lied..." Who ever said he could not talk?! Take care mate. JR
