jonf45 Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 Hi, this is the most interesting of the BA Landor builds to say the least!! I found a box of old kits id made around 1993/94 at a guess. inside was a B707, a Concorde, several VC10s and 3 Tridents...... All are in awful condition, but incredibly there was a load undercarriage parts and wheels, though broken and separated, still there in the box. Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr So as i was doing the bB737 and 757 in BA Landor scheme i decided to dust off one of the Tridents and give that a new coat too!! None of my usual model paint removers touched the 30 year old caked on Humbrol, so i had to go a bit more industrial!! Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr After several coats the paint has been removed, so im going to start to rebuild it and see how it goes!! Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr I am well aware that BA never operated the Trident in Landor colours, and only 2E G-AVFG and 3B G-AWZK carried the scheme while in use by the maintenance team at Heathrow, but i thought it would make a useful guniea pig for paint test, and a fun little 'What if' Am currently washing the pieces to remove any residual paint stripper, and will then have to start sanding down to try and get the parts to look a little better than they did when i first attempted it Ive ordered the 26Decals BAC 1-11 Landor and BA Red tail Trident sets to use for decals Cheers Jon 8
Gimme Shelter Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 wow - what a find and what a great idea. I wish I could discover a box of kits I'd made that long ago too I love the 'industrial' attack on the paint - thats some real old plastic you have uncovered there looking forward to seeing the finished scheme
Back in the Saddle Posted November 20, 2024 Posted November 20, 2024 These will look great when you’ve finished them! I’ve seen photos of the Landor Tridents and that scheme looked rather good on them.👍
jonf45 Posted November 24, 2024 Author Posted November 24, 2024 (edited) @Gimme Shelter @Back in the Saddle Thank you for your comments guys Managed to get a bit of work done on project Guniea pig....... Firstly, got all the original paint removed Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr Then managed to get the 2 fuselage halves back together and cockpit windows reattached. Had to rebuild the right side wing spar, but seems to have worked Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr Then the replacement decals arrived in superquick time as always from @26Decals, and they look fantastic (BAC 1-11 on top, Trident below) PXL_20241122_093306874.RAW-01.COVER by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr and finally, the first bit of paint on this kit for 30 years (Mr Surfacer 1500 White) 🤪 Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr Now to fill some more gaps, and make the fuselage a little smoother!! Gimme Shelter Posted November 25, 2024 Posted November 25, 2024 new life - a kit reborn A great idea, bringing your old work back to life. This will be great 1
jonf45 Posted November 28, 2024 Author Posted November 28, 2024 (edited) Thanks guys First proper bit of painting..... Wings airbrushed with Mr Color Acrylic H315 and 201, Tail piece finished in H326 and 201. The dark blue looks spot on to me, difficult to show in photos, but hopefully i can get a shot in sunshine soon to show Airfix 1:144 Trident BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr I have then done the top half of fuselage in H338, which also looks good to me, but i forget to take a pic, but you can see some sneaking through in the tail pic Decided to mask the tail and do both the blue parts as the one supplied on the BA Negus decals is obviously a slightly different blue. I realise it probably looks a little like overkill on the masking, but i prefer that to finding some paint where it shouldnt be Airfix 1:144 Trident BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr The Speedjack masked off, i used Tamiya 3mm which seemed to be the perfect size for this one Airfix 1:144 Trident BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr Lower body/Tail blue going on today....... Back in the Saddle Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 Looking good! Out of interest, what did you use to strip the paint? I might need to do something similar to one of my models…

I might need to do something similar to one of my models… @Back in the Saddle It was from B&Q, called "paint predator"!!! I tried various model removers but I think the original enamel paint had been there too long/caked on, this was really easy to use and worked straight away, without any damage to the plastic. The one thing I would say is to pour some into a smaller pot, as otherwise you'll unwittingly transfer tiny bits of paint back into the container!! Jon 1
Gimme Shelter Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 enjoying and looking forward to seeing the 21st century end result
jonf45 Posted December 5, 2024 Author Posted December 5, 2024 Thanks @Gimme Shelter. A couple small updates as work hasn't allowed much time this week..... I managed to find sufficient amount of wheels in the assorted junk, so have put them together. Not sure how I'm going to make new undercarriage yet, but that will have to wait til the wings are attached anyway! Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr I've created 2 nose wheel bay doors that seem to fit quite nicely, one is glued in place and the other will go on at the end. I've now airbrushed the blue on, i think it matches the Landor blue on the decals nicely, so have done the tail too..... Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr Sadly we've not really had any sunshine still, but it looks good under white light. I've started to add decals, and the red of the Speed stripe etc and the other little details certainly brighten it up nicely, ill post a pic later 👍 Cheers Jon 8
jonf45 Posted December 10, 2024 Author Posted December 10, 2024 Hi, First lot of decals on, i think the colours look just about right, i ended up adding a couple of drops of white to the grey as it looked a tad too dark tom me Airfix 1:144 Trident 1C BA Landor by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr For something that was just meant to be a colour test, this has taken up far more of my time than expected!!! Cheers Jon 5

ColinChipmunkfan Posted December 10, 2024 Posted December 10, 2024 What a difference from the first photo to the last one. The end result looks first class, well done sir!! Colin 1
TheyJammedKenny! Posted December 11, 2024 Posted December 11, 2024 Keep going, keep going! It's great. Maybe you should attempt a save at one of the old Plasticart ones (actually in 1/87 scale) if you have one in your stash. I'd love to see what magic you could achieve there. 1
Gimme Shelter Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 looking good there - keep going with them all. They shall look great once restored 1
Bell209 Posted December 12, 2024 Posted December 12, 2024 Great work. I've done a couple of rebuilds recently and they're certainly satisfying. I use oven cleaner to strip the paint - the proper stuff, not the environmentally friendly version! The caustic stuff does burn your skin a bit, though... 1
jonf45 Posted December 13, 2024 Author Posted December 13, 2024 Thanks guys, much appreciated. @Bell209 thank you, i never even thought of that, probably would have been a bit safer @Gimme Shelter thanks as ever mate, it has certainly made me contemplate the other ones in the box of doom!!! @TheyJammedKenny! thank you, i didnt realise there was a 1/87 one, that sounds intriguing!!! @ColinChipmunkfan thank you, i really didnt expect it to go as well as it has bearing in mind how long it took to strip the original mess off 🤪 I have now completed the re-build, its gone far better than i expected, not perfect, but ill happily take it!! Hopefully we may get a bit of sun before i have to go to work tomorrow so i can get a decent photo or 2 Cheers Jon 2
heloman1 Posted December 14, 2024 Posted December 14, 2024 Excellent work. Re paint stripper, have you tried Oxytol? I believe it's an industrial floor stripper. It's water soluble and can be reused. Colin

Colin thank you, no i hadnt heard of that, hopefully the bottle i brought should last another 20 years by the look of it, but if not ill have a look!!! Cheers Jon
jonf45 Posted December 15, 2024 Author Posted December 15, 2024 As we had a tiny bit of sunshine, i managed to grab a few pics of the Guinea pig..... ill do a load in the finished section, but heres one to give a rough idea how it turned out. Thanks for all the comments along the way!! Jon Airfix 1.144 Trident 1C G-ARPD-7 by Jonathan Francis, on Flickr 3 1
TheyJammedKenny! Posted December 15, 2024 Posted December 15, 2024 Excellent! If ONLY BA had been willing to operate it for a few extra years. They might have had to put off privatization a bit, too...
