Michael Morris Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Hi I'm looking for a scale ruler for plastic modellers. I know the IPMS do one, but it only available at shows they attend and then stocks are very limited (they brought just 3 of them to SMW2024!). Tankraft.com do I nice one, but it would total over £30 with shipping from the US to the UK. Any suggestions gratefully received.
Heather Kay Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 I got an Expo branded 1/72nd rule, which has both feet and inches and metres, from Squires Tools.
Graham Boak Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Didn't Scale Aircraft Modelling/Guideline offer one? Might be worth a check.
ckw Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Yeah, I've got 2 ... one was just a ruler (thin and very flexible) and one has scribing templates for circles and squares (but less flexible). However both were acquired about 30 years ago!! Cheers Colin
Mark Harmsworth Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 This? https://www.amazon.co.uk/UA-90038-Model-Triangular-Scale-Ruler/dp/B0CQJWNHQS/ref=sr_1_7?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.ZzMqamd9YVhwI_Wc6AWboO9S5Hb7XGE_DqoFellbVsfOZiIpgsYQEIW5HQXuB_2kEY4Ktis1rfg3swZZvfYJMo_rPFYzhS4HvYDXVSCiJVrBcxbv4a4sP93j8E5RbEcsLE8L6R0zqg-Y99q75BJoPhLrMJMAdHvFIP5oUnARhD0KdDkob3hxErtnjcc3hqV0Rl_pM8cYNrmwWx9ryArSMbbZAX7ucBDN40xxgy97uj8x0tdS7FvP3ma_qdk2qqdON1TX-KJB1HMKWphHxudDhTV9DwLyV98hCewWv7qzkaA.EyNEJXbwwvmxtvVKy0Rk_hSHyDIjwMrAH2nSYRZzTbo&dib_tag=se&keywords=scale%2Bruler%2B1%2B72&nsdOptOutParam=true&qid=1731412750&sr=8-7&th=1
Paul821 Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 @Michael Morris you don't mention the scale you require. With 1:72 being an imperial scale I have never had an issue with using a standard rule. Even when modelling railway subjects @4mm to the foot it's OK. I have both the ruler from Amazon mentioned by @Mark Harmsworth and the rulers from.SAM as per @ckw But neither gets as much use as my standard rule. I could see a use for one in something like 1:35
dnl42 Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 @Paul821 makes a good point. Depending on your preferred scales, an architectural scale could be very useful. The imperial version will have 1/4in, which is 1/48, 3/8in, which is 1/32. 3/16in, which is 1/64, &etc. The metric version will have less typical modeling scales, but you might need 1/50 or 1/100. I'm not sure an engineering scale would be useful as the reference is still an inch. FWIW, I do sometimes use an architectural scale, but I mostly rely on a digital caliper and a spreadsheet with the scales I use with measurements in decimal inches and mm.
jovapad Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Maybe this? https://www.bnamodelworld.com/hobby-tools-supplies-misc-supplies-dspiae-dsp-at-as
JamesP Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 The SAM ones are the best and I still use them constantly. I have the IPMS one but have barely taken it out of its tube.
Max Headroom Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 I have the SAM ones and the smaller one had metal fatigue and one of the ends came off. I also have one called ‘Murphy’s Rule’ graded in 1/72 and 1/48. Acquired many years ago but I’ve forgotten where. It’s nice and rigid and much longer than the SAM one and is ideal for those larger re scribing jobs.
Michael Morris Posted November 13, 2024 Author Posted November 13, 2024 Just ordered one of the DSPIAE rulers from Hobby-Lines Limited. Exactly what I was after. 😁 1
