Photos from ScaleModelWorld Telford 2024

65 images to give an idea of how much was on display. There were many more I didn't photograph and given that cars are probably about 10% of the entire show, the rest being given over to military or miscellaneous, it's a big show as always.  I picked up  a 1969 AMT Buick Riviera and a Nunu Skechers Audi R8 GT3. And a lot of paint.

 

Amongst other things it was good to see a built up version of the Nunu Porsche 911 RSR. (several, further down) and to see a completed Belkits Hyundai too.

 

The lighting is quite harsh for photography and I only took a compact camera, so it does none of these builds justice.

Some really nicely built cars their this year it would seem . If you remember when I met you at last years show I was disappointed with the lack of cars on show . Nice to see variations on the standard kit too , something I'm into doing atm . 

  I went to the Classic Car Show at the NEC this year . Telford again maybe next year...

I was just thinking when looking at the pics that there seemed to be a lot more there this year Gary, some nice stuff on display! (I do wish I hadn't sold my Tamiya Focus in the blue scheme....!!)

I enjoyed looking at the photos too, thanks for taking the time to share.  It's a 7 plus hour round trip for me to Telford,  but every year I'm running out of excuses not to attend - Andy.

It's got to be done at least once.  Although I am lucky it's only 40 minutes away from where I live.

Just got back meself, it's a ten-hour round trip due to the roadworks on the M1 and elsewhere so we stayed in a rather dodgy hotel from Friday to Sunday night.  It's like going to Mecca, all must go at least once in their lifetime.  I was totally thrown by the sheer size of it and the standard of models displayed.  I was surprised that vehicle modelling is in such a small minority though.

My main interest is auto modelling too.

Thank you Galaxy for putting up the pictures and promoting our side of the hobby.

But in the grand scheme of things what you see at Telford is a general reflection of the hobby overall. Aircraft predominate, followed by AFV's then everything else to a lesser extent.

I found plenty of automotive models to look at, and in the competition the civilian vehicles had a good entry.

Auto modelling has a huge following in the USA with many dedicated auto modelling events but has never caught on to the same extent over here. There are plenty of auto modellers out there going by the many mainstream and specialist kits that become available each year.

There is one dedicated automotive model show on this side of the Atlantic that is held in Belgium each year.

It is the Jabbeke Show that I think is held in March each year.

As for Asia.. My experience of Japan's model shops when there on holiday shows something like (wet finger in the air guess) 50% Gundam, 30% Military and 20% Auto which is a lot more balanced between auto and military, once you've removed the mostly Asia-only Gundam from the equation. I wonder how it is in continental Europe compared to the UK?    I do build the occasional plane and I can certainly admire the skill of the military stuff even if it's not my thing. 

 

I feel there's a lot of car builders out there in the UK even if they're visible neither on this forum or at shows. I wanted to put my own stuff in the Staffordshire show this year but it clashed with something else, so I might try and exhibit next time instead, get some more exposure for auto modelling. For a much smaller show ,the last Staffordshire show I did attend had a higher proportion of auto to military.

 

Despite all that, with Nunu and Hasegawa in particular over the last 5 years or so and then to a lesser extent Tamiya, Revell, D-Model Kits,  Belkits and Aoshima.. for a non-military niche, we do pretty well with releases. And we do even better with announcements of releases. (I'm looking at you Belkits and your Ford Rs200)

 

It's a shame that modelworks stopped attending the show after Covid, as their stand had a good selection of motorsport decals and kits and was one of the few stands there fully focussed on auto. And it's a shame that Mr Collectakit retired as he always seemed to bring about 100 secondhand car kits with him, I'd always go straight to his stand when entering the show and I bought more car kits from him than anyone else over the years. Some of them I've even built 

 

Slim pickings for purchases again I thought this year although if you like American cars there were two stalls with many of those, the yankz guy is 100% american auto and the other stall who has a lot of US stuff and a big box of cheap Heller on the floor that seemed to empty out over the course of Saturday.

I agree us car modellers are well catered for.  When I got back into the hobby 5 / 6 years ago it's been good to have more quality choices than just relying on Tamiya and Hasegawa for rally car kits . 

  At the classic car show I attended the two RS200's in the auction each made well over £200,000 . Come on Belkits,  hurry up and release the kit version !

So far the majority of mentions have been about what mainstream plastic kit manufacturers have been doing.

One has to also remember that there are a considerable number of specialist companies catering specifically for the Auto Modelling community.

Auto modelling is actually, believe it or not, doing very well generally. Those big 1/8th scale car kits like Agora showed at Telford are growing in popularity, not to mention those highly complex multi medium kits from MFH in 1/12th and other scales. C1 Models, Rennaissance, Fernando Pinto's FP Modelos, Scale Motorsports and Le Mans Miniatures come to mind for 1/24th scale resin multi medium kits. Not to mention the burgeoning number of 3D printed bodies, parts and trans kits becoming available from the likes of Kit Form Services, Motobitz and Andy Swindlehirst's Model Cars. The 1/43rd scale kit and collectable market has also been buoyant for many years and even Airfix are seeing potential with this scale.

Like Galaxy I missed Modelworks not being at Telford and don't remember seeing Motobitz there either !

Great set of photos. I was going as one of the great unwashed on Saturday but the repots of roadworks on the M1, put me off as it's a long enough day without those. 

As for small niche producers the costs for trading at Telford with accommodation, trader insurance, etc.,  have become, for me,  too high and production of stock pre-show takes a huge amount of time and investment in the hope that sales will make it all worthwhile.

For some reason the RS200 holds no interest for me, so when it does come out that'll save me some dosh (even if it isn't £200K...!! 🤣)

MB,  I guess you are the Motobitz guy!     Maybe the cost was why Modelworks was not there either.

There's an interesting video on Youtube from the 'Trader's perspective'. He runs a Youtube chanel and I think maybe also a 'proper' modelshop (I haven't watched any of his videos before so not 100% on that). It was his first time at Telford and he didn't take a great deal of stuff to sell which might have, IMO, skewed his results slightly. Anyway he gave a breakdown of his costs for the weekend and reckoned he needed £3K in sales to start seeing any profit. Apparently he sold less than £1000 worth of stuff....

(PS I was particularly interested as I had once toyed with the idea of booking a table there to sell a large proportion of my stash, particularly once the kit swap had stopped. As my costs would pretty much mirror his, that thought has gone well out of the window....!!)

It is their latest creation and looks really good. The model is based on Doyle's car from the TV series.

Wonder if Bodie's Capri will be next in their line up?

I have two of them Noel, pre-ordered as soon as they were announced!

 

My earlier post in this thread was regarding the Group B RS200 (two hundred  ) which I've always thought was a particularly bland looking car and so I'll have no interest in buying the Belkits model when it is finally released!

Probably someone who’s put the hard yards in on the Gunze/Eidai/Airfix “TR7 Rally” with or without the help of a Monogram TR8… I’ve got that livery as a set of aftermarket decals, but those two kits are the only game in town as far as I know.
