The Spadgent Posted November 8, 2024 Posted November 8, 2024 Cue the Theremin! Being a huge Tim Burton fan and loving the Mars Attacks movie from the 90s I was somehow oblivious to the fact that everything was based around a set of 55 Topps trading cards from 1962. I did collect bubble gum cards as a kid, Star Wars, Black hole, Garbage Pail Kids etc but these were way before my time. So when I saw this book for sale. I was intrigued and purchased it. This started me down the rabbit hole and boy I’m glad I’m not a card collector. 😬💸 Fortunately I’m a modeller so my outlay is rather small to scratch my Martian itch. Here’s the Box of goodness! It’s a pretty big model and the moulding looks fantastic! It’s strangely made in different types of plastic but I guess that’s ok. Not that many bits but I’m looking forward more to the painting. I also have a bunch of LEDs, wires and what not so I might have the lamp post light up too. 💡 The instructions although made in 2020 look’s like they’re straight from the 60s. Being used to aeroplane kits I’m used to a high step count in the instructions but this is next level. Four whole steps. 🤣 I’m sure I’ll be adding a few 3D printed bits and a bit of scratch modelling but it’s going to be a whole heap of fun. Please join me if you will on a bit of Martian adventure. It’ll be a blast!!!! until next time! Happy modelling chums. Johnny 21 1

The Spadgent Posted November 11, 2024 Author Posted November 11, 2024 Just realised that this is my first character model that I haven’t made / printed myself. I did my Dewey build and the Phantom but this is my first actual kit. Pushed along by @AdrianMF’s wonderful Bengal lancer build. Not really the same but you catch my drift. The mould is great but the fit is a bit hap hazard compared to vehicle kits. The head is four parts that roughly fit together using almost a butt join. I had to pin the parts in place and clip them down to stop misalignment. It’s been one bit at a time then leave to dry. Bonkers really but there you are. sides on, you can see some gaps. But it looks like it’s goi g to be good. 🤩 The central bits had to get held in place with a larger clip. Eventually we got to here. there are slight seams but a touch of PPP and a light sponge Sanding stick has sorted them. Unfortunately I didn’t take a pic. 😫 Slow start but a solid one. more soon. 🤗 Thanks for dropping by. All comments welcomed. And as always. Happy modelling. Johnny. 16
giemme Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Definitely a complicated assembly for the head, but you managed brilliantly! Ciao 1
Keeff Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Nice work Johnny .... the head looks good now you've finished torturing it with clips and tape! Keith ☺️ 2
TonyW Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 The film is one of my favorites. Anything that has Tom jones Vs Martians gets my vote. Despite what he might say, it definitely is unusual. I'm here for the duration... Tony. 1
AdrianMF Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Nice! Great film, perfect antidote to "Independence Day"! I didn't realise that it all started with collectors cards. The sculpting and mould look very good, looking forward to the paint. Regards, Adrian 1

The Spadgent Posted November 12, 2024 Author Posted November 12, 2024 Ok. A little more after work. The head with PPP. Should look good under primer. The rest of the construction looks to be quite straight forward with only seams to deal with. the body. (Thinner plastic) Arms. Likewise. The tanks for his back. with a lovely seam to fix. Not a lot of bits really. Just the legs and gun victim and lamppost to go. And I guess the street side. i decided to look into the electrical bit. I’ll use a 4xAAA battery box linked up to a 6v flickering LED Using this to link it all together. Here’s what the light does once switched on. And here’s inside to lamp. Should look nice and B Movie esq. Looking at the lamp base it needs holes drilling for wires and what not. So a few twists with the pin vice and. Lots to sand when it’s dry. More soon. Thanks for popping in and as always Happy Modelling. Johnny 14
Keeff Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 You're flying through this build! Nice work and more torture with the clips! I'm liking the light ..... Keith ☺️ 1 1
AdrianMF Posted November 12, 2024 Posted November 12, 2024 Just don't tell anyone that it's meant to flicker. It will drive them nuts... Regards, Adrian 4

The Spadgent Posted November 13, 2024 Author Posted November 13, 2024 Evening my dudes. Hope you’re all having a splendid week. More gluing of bits. The victim had his head built. And the side that got zapped! This is going to be so much fun to paint. I’m going to do this like William Defoe in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Almost like a Haynes manual. The hand comes in two parts and will need filling. Top side looks good though. You can see how of this white plastic is off I hold it to my lamp. Good fit though. And the soles are a treat. They really look great and fit well. The LED got sandwiched in place. Ray gun built. I’ll need to either scratch or 3D print the power bank that goes with the gun. These tubes head a really annoying seam that ran either side. I sanded it back and used TET so smooth it out. And with the lamp base and the drain cover that’s pretty much everything glued. I have to add the digits to the arms bit the next steps will be sanding and smoothing. Until next time. Ack Ack!!!! Johnny 17 2
Keeff Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 Good work Johnny ...... You'll have this done by the weekend! Keith ☺️ 1

I notice that this particular Martian doesn't have much of a nose; I wonder if somebody said "Macbeth" to him too often. Curious of Mars 👽 7
LorenSharp Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 Didn't they use your cousin Beethtinkz(sp)( never was good with the Martian alphabet.) as a the idea Martian? Or, is that another relative of yours I'm thinking of. 6
