Rob K. Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 Hi, For my next project I am planning to build a Dutch Navy Lynx. For this I have purchased the two Revell boxings and hoping to construct them into a model of the SH-14D. The HAS 3 should have most of the parts and the Mk 88 should have some of the sonar and winch equipment. Purchased some Eduard after market items as well, although I will not be able to use all of it as the cockpit dashboard photo etch is based on the Mk 88 for instance. Not that I am an expert on all things Lynx, but there has been someone who has figured all of this out in the past. His model was based on Revell’s Mark 88 and made an extensive build report. Later when the 1/32 HAS 3 came out he updated the report on how to combine both kits. See the link below: https://designer.home.xs4all.nl/models/lynx-32/lynx-1.htm Below post showing the difference between the Mk 88 and the HAS 3 kits and a step by step guide on how to build an SH-14D by using both kits: https://designer.home.xs4all.nl/models/lynx-32/lynx-comparison.htm There is an abundance of photo material on the Dutch IPMS website: https://ipms.nl/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=509:walkaround-westland-lynx&catid=177:walkarounds-helicopters-diverse&Itemid=302 Here are the two kits and the aftermarket items: I have been hunting high and low for the DutchDecal sheet 32016 to no avail and would still like to obtain one, so if anyone out there……? In the meantime I had my own decals printed by Heli Scale Quality. This is a great service: The decal itself was €15 and the price of having them developed and printed for you was €10. The accuracy of any sheet you want printed I gather depends wholly on the info that you provide this company with. Make sure you mention water slide decal, because they also print regular stickers for RC. I just mailed them a number of photos of close up shots showing symbols and stencils I deemed too difficult to paint and after some back and forth correspondence, they came up with below sheet. I used their decals before. They appear a little thick on the backing paper, but actually conform pretty nicely with some decal softener. (See my Sikorsky UH-34 in the footnote) Since then I noticed this decal sheet is now available in their online shop: Be sure to get ready for some tough questioning with regards to dimensions and texts you request printed on your decal sheet. I gather they just want to do a good job for the customer 🙂 The Heli Scale Quality website: https://heli-scale-quality.de/Decals-Water-sliding-pictures:::53.html Now I just have to build the Lynx…….. Thanks for watching, Rgds, Rob 9
luxskater Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 Sounds like an interesting project! I remember the MLD Lynxes visiting my former home base Groningen-Eelde once in a while. - Peter 1

Good looking helicopters those Lynxes. Rgds, Rob
Rob K. Posted November 7, 2024 Author Posted November 7, 2024 Hi, Started work on the cockpit. Below the difference in main instrument panels between the Mk 88 (white) and the HAS 3 (grey). Neither are exact matches with the SH-14D, but the Mk 88 comes closest. The big electronic display will have to be removed. I will look in the spare box for some (grey/black) coloured PE or Decal instrument panels, resembling the panels as shown in the photo graph. To be continued, Rgds, Rob 4
bigbadbadge Posted November 7, 2024 Posted November 7, 2024 Nice project, I sometimes see Dutch Navy Lynx Helicopters fly over my home in South Kent, lovely looking Helicopters. Interested to see this progress and I have the HAS.3 in the stash too. Chris 1

The MLD Lynxes were taken out of service in 2012... They may be Wildcats actually. Rob, from the layout of the IP it looks like the middle part of the HAS3 is what was on the -14. Perhaps that could be transplanted, or duplicated? Or even use the HAS3 part, but merge the hooded scope 88 left lobe to it. The 88 IP's big MFD replaced several of the toggle boxes and meters, and the engine gauges were moved to the side and re-oriented 90 degrees. 1

It has been a while but I saw Dutch Lynx choppers , I also saw a foreign camouflaged Sea King earlier this year although that is a display machine 2

Was just reading through the above xs4all link again and somewhere hidden away in the sprues is meant to be part 266A, containing the entire correct SH-14 instrument panel. Will have a look tomorrow. Rob K. Posted November 8, 2024 Author Posted November 8, 2024 Hi, The (supplemental ) sprue which I require for the correct main instrument panel is not in the box. A quick search on eBay showed that in some boxes this sprue was probably provided in early Mk 88 boxes, but not in the later ones. It is similar to the Revell Mk8 sprue, but a quick look at scalemates shows that the part number for the main instrument panel for Mk8 is 236A and for the early Mk 88 boxing, the part on the extra sprue should be 266A. The mysterious missing sprue: The nice thing about this missing sprue is that it also appears to have the Winch arrangement parts. This winch arrangement is not present in the later boxings of the HAS 3 and the Mk 88. Therefore went looking for an (early?) Mk 88 boxing with the supplemental sprue, which I think is (near) identical to the Mk8 sprue and found a cheap one on eBay. So the Lynx will contain parts from 3 kits……. Rgds, Rob 2
Rob K. Posted November 12, 2024 Author Posted November 12, 2024 Hi, Started with some work on the seats for which I have also purchased some Eduard seat belts: I removed the moulded seatbelts. The seats should have some texture too, so I thinned some Tamiya putty with MLT and stippled this on: Early SH-14A’s appear to have had Orange seats. On all the SH-14D photos I could find, below appears to be the (later) standard: Not sure if the Thinned putty treatment shows: Also constructed the Sonar equipment bracket and electronic equipment casings (It is almost looks the same as on the SH-14D): Assembled the Sonar winch: The SH-14D winch however looks significantly different in construction: Scratchbuilding this version may just be beyond my capabilities, so will probably use the kit supplied one (although this will bug me). Did some work on the landing gear and rotor hub: And this morning the rotor blade fold set from ScaleWarship came by post: Used a similar conversion my Trumpeter UH-34 build and quite like this extra detail plus it saves space in my display case. This is what it should look like: Waiting for some more items to arrive. Discovered an Eduard Mk 8 Exterior photo etch set which has the engine metal mesh protection covers, which is almost a must, since the kit supplied ones are on the transparent sprue. Also ordered a resin turbine engine with the intention of displaying an engine if it does not turn out to be too difficult to fit. That’s all for now, thanks for watching, Rgds, Rob 5
heloman1 Posted November 13, 2024 Posted November 13, 2024 Great start Rob. I built the kit for a Lynx GB some years ago. Adorned it with Archers rivets , as it needed them. You might want to look in the 'Pinned Items' there is a wealth of Lynx info there, Colin 1

Just had a look and indeed quite some Lynx photo material there. Rob
Rob K. Posted November 13, 2024 Author Posted November 13, 2024 Hi, Received the donor kit today with the extra sprue which just turned out to be the Mk 8 sprue with SAR winch and a different main instrument panel, which looks closer to a SH-14 panel: The SH-14D cockpit panel: Busied up the rear of the panel as well and will add some wiring later: Assembled both port and starboard torpedo brackets. On a number of images these brackets appear to have a cover: Therefore I glued two 1/48 Sea Fury bomb halves together to simulate this feature: Think I will hang the torpedo off the port side. I have only ever seen one torpedo hang off on either port or starboard side. Wonder if they could carry two at the same time or if this would be an unusual or too heavy for a loadout. That’s all for today. Thanks for watching, Rgds, Rob 7

Hook Posted November 14, 2024 Posted November 14, 2024 Consider another chair pulled up, sir! Nice work so far. 1
Rob K. Posted November 14, 2024 Author Posted November 14, 2024 Hi, Trying to get some of the more challenging and a few tedious parts of the build out of the way. Made a start with the stubs of the main landing gear and removed the raised parts: Filled the gaps with Green Stuff putty and roughly shaped it: Hope it hardens ok, since the material is rather old. Hopefully it will turn out like this: In addition I completed the SAR hoist: All the black spots are VMS black CA glue, which is a great filler for quite a few sink marks here and there. Playing with the thought of installing mini magnets on the various equipment such as torpedo brackets, Sonar Winch and Electronic brackets and the machine gun arrangement. Below photo shows an SH-14 fitted with a machine gun. (Probably an early Utility version of the Lynx) Therefore ordered below 1/32 resin replacement instead of the kit’s Browning type MG. Not quite sure if I will fit this, but I couldn’t resist: Constructed the bracket nonetheless: That’s all, to be continued, Rgds, Rob 7
Rob K. Posted November 15, 2024 Author Posted November 15, 2024 Hi, One item that was bugging me was the Sonar winch of the SH-14, which is quite different from the kit’s German Mk 88. Below the SH-14 winch: Since I had the donor kit, I thought I would attempt making one from scratch using some kit parts and some Evergreen styrene profiles. My attempt is not accurate, but from a distance it looks acceptable to my eye (See Mk 88 winch in the background). The winch is not finished yet. The vertical wire trunking with expansion pieces still need to be made (not sure how) and connect it between the top sheave and the bellow. Tomorrow. I will try to finish the winch arrangement: That’s all, thanks for watching, Rob 8
heloman1 Posted November 16, 2024 Posted November 16, 2024 Looking good Rob. Re the 'Pinned' ref, it seems to have disappeared from where it used to be atop the WIP pages. So, where it is not, I have no idea but there was a lot of ref there. Maybe the MODs can help! Colij 1
Rob K. Posted November 16, 2024 Author Posted November 16, 2024 Hi, Finished the Sonar winch today. Much simplified and not entirely accurate, but it will probably look ok, hidden away in the back of the cargo compartment. Not fixed yet of course and I need to take the slack out of the lead wire. That’s all for today, thanks for watching, Rgds, Rob 4
Rob K. Posted November 17, 2024 Author Posted November 17, 2024 Hi, Not much to show since I did quite a lot of primer coat on lots of different parts. Did a preliminary attempt to shape and sand the small landing gear wing stubs, after which also primer was applied. Will need to address some small crevasses and the length of the “sponsons”, but I think I have something to work with. Will fill all the cracks and seams with some black CA and sand and modify further. To be continued, Rob 4
Massimo Posted November 17, 2024 Posted November 17, 2024 This is a start with a bang!!! Great work done up to now!!! I'll be following with attention. Hope you can fins the decal sheet you're looking for, BTW the decals you had made will do their part! Ciao Massimo

Rob K. Posted November 22, 2024 Author Posted November 22, 2024 Hi, Have been mainly working on the cockpit. Used a combination of the kit decals and the Eduard Mk 8 Zoom detail set and for the main instrument panel The center console is also Zoom and so are the seat belts. The Seat belts appear to be of the type used by the German Lynx’s. The SH-14 had a different type seatbelt, however, I am not going to attempt to recreate those. The “German” type will have to do and look better than the moulded Revell ones to my eye. Some floors appear to be bare and some floors seem to be brown canvas covered on photographs. Still need to fix the rudder pedals. Next up is the Sonar station and the painting and weathering of the Sonar winch. That’s all for now. Thanks for watching. Rgds, Rob 13
Rob K. Posted November 26, 2024 Author Posted November 26, 2024 Hi, Assembled the electronics station in the cargo compartment. Slightly different instruments on the Mk 88 compared to the SH-14D,but it is a reasonable approximation for my humble build. In hindsight it probably would have been nicer to move the seat a little closer instead of the kit position, I guess it is moved back on it’s rails for access.. Added some wiring: Some hydraulic hoses with couplings for the winch: Looking at the IPMS NL Walkaround Lynx section photographs, the winch and electronics appear to be quite modular. I am assuming (although not sure) that the winch and the electronics station can be taken out if needed and convert the Lynx to an Utility version and V.V. Hence I decided to fix the aft bulkhead seats folded up to add a little interest to what otherwise would have been an uninteresting grey panel. Reasonably happy with the winch (still need to take the slack out of the wire). Will fix the control sticks tomorrow and then I think it is time to put the two fuselage halves together. Late Note: in hindsight I should have used the HAS3 bulkhead (with the broom cupboard). This is actually in one of the Revell donor kits. The Dutch Lynx’s did have this extra cutout according to below photograph: Will use this unused bulkhead for an AH-7 which I will be able to construct from the kits that I am currently using for this build. That’s all for now. Thanks for watching. Rgds, Rob 12
