Spiny Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Great job on the polishing, you've got a really good shine on there. Remember that all polishing is is replacing big scratches with successively finer scratches until you can't see them. I have plenty of scratches on the Silvia I've just completed (including a very annoying one on the roof), but there is enough of a shine that the camera didn't pick it up. More proof of my theory that a shiny paint job can hide a multitude of sins 😆 Personally I'd have used BMF for the chromework, but everyone has a method which works for them and I'm sure it will look great when the tape comes off. 1
keefr22 Posted June 10 Posted June 10 Can only agree with the others Nick, gorgeous paint job and a really good looking grille - top work! Keith 1
Fnick Posted June 10 Author Posted June 10 Thank you all for your overly kind comments ☺️. 1 hour ago, Spiny said: scratches until you can't see them Yep but here you still can! 😄 1 hour ago, Spiny said: Personally I'd have used BMF for the chromework Well I did use it on my Eldorado but here especially for the bumpers and the bit where the grill goes the shapes are too tricky so I'd think I'd make a mess wth BMF! The greenstuffworld chrome is pretty good actually. I just need to master it properly. Hopefully the next update will be when the body has been chromed! Nick 2

I have to admit I didn't think about my BMF comment being read as also applying to the grilles, I was only looking at the window surrounds when I wrote that. Oaint is definitely the way to go for the grille and probably the bumpers too. 1
Fnick Posted June 12 Author Posted June 12 Ah ok my mistake. I would still use paint for everything to ensure the colour/hue/etc is consistent for all chrome parts. (Well as consistent as my painting can be! 😄) On my Eldorado I have a mixture of kit chrome and BMF. Match is not bad but still noticeable they are different. Nick 1
Fnick Posted June 14 Author Posted June 14 Morning all So at 10pm yesterday I finished masking the body. I did have a scare when one of the side stripes started coming off when I was repositioning some masking tape. Thankfully it stayed in place but I had already masked over the decals near the boot so was quite concerned about it taking the tape off there... Could I wait until today to start painting the Chrome?... Er no!😄 This morning was spent carefully taking the tape off. This is the bit I was most concerned about First the good news All came off fine without any residue on the paint! Yeah! I clearly didn't leave enough time for the clear coat to cure on the Chrysler when I had that problem. And now the not so good news... Yep what I was dreading the most... I tried to peel of the decal from the masking tape but without success. I've fired off an email to Revell asking for a replacement decal sheet. You never know! I'm not going to try and paint it as that would probably make things look a lot worse. A possible solution is this I have a spare white decal for one of the stripes that can use if I cut it into bits. Might be the least worse option that this point in time. I still have plenty of other things to do on this one so fixing this issue is certainly not urgent and doesn't stop me from finishing the model. And at the end of the day if that is how the model ends up then so be it. I'm still very pleased with how it is progressing. Thanks for looking Nick 11
keefr22 Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Ah, that's a shame Nick, let's hope Revell come up with a new decal sheet. 1 hour ago, Fnick said: And at the end of the day if that is how the model ends up then so be it. I think it's still looking really good! Keith 1
Bengalensis Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Looking great, but obviously that's a problem there. Now I'm sure you can make a good recovery with white decal material, if a spare will be a problem to get. 1 1
Neddy Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Ouch! Commiserations Nick, that's tough. As for the rest it's looking marvellous. 1
Fnick Posted June 14 Author Posted June 14 Cheers guys It's just one of those things. Maybe if I used a thicker tougher clear coat then I may not have had that problem but I prefer my clear coats not to be visibly a layer on top of the paint. But that obviously does have its drawbacks! Next time I'll try and use paper to cover most of the decal and leave just enough of a gap for the masking tape to stay in place. Nick
SnøMotion Posted June 14 Posted June 14 Ah, such a shame, Nick! Although, as the others have said, otherwise it’s looking superb I've had a great experience with replacement parts from Revell recently, so hopefully you will too! Martin 1

I’ve had great luck using super glue accelerator to u stick Tamiya (any really) masking tape, I brush it on over the tape, lift a corner of the tape and let it wick under, it unsticks the tape really efficiently. On another side note, I had a 74 Road Runner that was hit on one side, the body shop fixed it perfectly but couldn’t source the new “Road Runner” red glow in the dark stile, so they painted the stipe on….. just saying, it can happen in the real world too. and the car looked really weird at night under a street light with stipe- no stripe- stripe glow, no glow, glow 1

Fnick Posted June 22 Author Posted June 22 (edited) Hi all I contacted Revell about decal replacement but since the Chevy is no longer in production they were not able to help me. On the plus side they were very quick in responding to me. Spiny then kindly offered to send me so stripes from one of his Chevy builds but on receiving them I realised the white did not match. So I've got some generic white decals on their way to see if they are going to be ok. In the meantime I have sorted out the glass. I didn't use the kit glass as I wanted to use plastic cake wrap. Works quite well. The thinness works especially well on the inside. I also sorted the wheels. One of them had been used to make a mold using white morph which was a bit of a disaster... So I had to remove it as best I could and paint the back of the tire black. For the other three tires I painted the red stripe which I put on the back back as well. For the tire on the left above I had to put the stripe on the front. Thankfully Revell satin black matches the tire colour quite well and you wouldn't know the red stripe was there. And the tires on the chassis The internal grills have been glued on just need to paint them before I can put the body on the chassis One thing I still not sure how to tackle ( I was in a bit of a "I'll deal with that later" mood when I removed the grills from the bonnet Is how to replace them! 😄. So some thinking required. Thanks for looking Nick Edited June 22 by Fnick 5 1

It was my planned solution for making a spare tyre and wheel but now wondering if I should consider a different option… 1
Fnick Posted June 22 Author Posted June 22 6 minutes ago, othertales said: Is white morph normally hard to clean and remove Yep an absolute pain. Don't use it! I used green stuff world blue stuff. Works a treat along with their modelling putty powder. I'll take a pic of the spare tire I made and post it on here. 1

Spiny Posted June 22 Posted June 22 Such a shame the decals didn't match, fingers crossed the new ones are closer. I don't know why I didn't think of the stripes being different whites, especially considering I come across questions regarding RAL 9001, 9010 and 9016 all the time at work. At least the tyres have got sorted out, best of luck with the grilles now. 1
Fnick Posted June 25 Author Posted June 25 Afternoon all Body is now mated to the chassis. The air cleaner was glued on. I did have to remove some material from the underside to ensure the bonnet fitted properly. I understand that is not that unusual... I found when I tried to install the front grill that I had to remove some material on the front of the car and also on the top of the light fittings . Part of it was due to the grill itself which added some thickness. So out came the rotary tool! 😱 Fit is ok, not amazing, but good enough. Unfortunately I had to handle the front grill quite a bit so the chrome is slightly dulled now. But overall still pleased with how it came out. The rear bumper and light fittings were finished and installed. And also the spare wheel is now in the boot. As you can see the decals still need to be sorted out. I got some generic white decal stripes but they were no good. So I'm going to have to add strips.of white decal and hope I can do that without having obvious gaps/partition lines between them... Fingers crossed. The finishing line is getting close! 🙂 Thanks for looking Nick 6 1
RossFMJ Posted June 25 Posted June 25 Wow Nick, that is looking really really nice . I saw the first piccie and thought everything looked spot on . 1 2
