Great hinge work, Nick!

I don’t envy you with the front grille removal, though :fingerscrossed:

Me neither 😦   I'd attempt a 3D print before i considered doctoring that to add PE.

Same here but, if you don’t already have the kit, it starts looking like a very expensive front grille:rofl:

Well it is Christmas soon right? 😄

I think it will be all right. The bigger challenge IMHO is going to put the PE grill in... But let's burn that bridge when we come to it!

As a first attempt at doing something like this it will be good enough

Personally I'd say its pretty damn impressive full stop. - Andy

Afternoon all

More destruction these last few days! I started removing the "grill"

spacer.png

I've put some panel line of the SS 396 emblem as I want to sand it as close as possible to the letters and also thin it down from the back as it is far too thick especially when It will be glued back onto the grill.

When removing the grill I accidentally snapped the lower part off on one side. As it actually made things easier to clean up I did the same on the other side

spacer.png

Once it was all cleaned up I glued the two parts back together.

spacer.png

A bit fragile but that's is the way it is going to stay for a while. I am not sure whether to chrome the above on its own before adding the grill or adding the grill, painting everything gloss black and then masking the grill before chrome. I'm tempted to do the latter at this point.

This is progress on the other parts

I also added the rear seats temporarily to the interior to start getting an idea of the work required for the boot.

As a plus side the brass tube for the boot opening does not interfere with the rear seats! 🙂

That's is for now. Thanks for looking, Nick

Personally I be going down the preparing each part separately route.  By gluing the two pieces together first all you are doing is adding an extra step (masking) with the possibility that it won't be as neat as if done separately.  On the subject of neat the grill removal are very clean work - Andy

Thank Andy for your comment and thoughts! Yep you're right. I'm going to have to glue the grill on at one time so maybe better once all painted.

Just need to find a suitable grill now...

Sounds as though you're decided, but just to back up that course of action as if it was me I would also paint them separately. I've never got as good an edge masking as with two separate pieces so as well as being easier I suspect it will give you a better end result too.

Yeah but as we say in France: only idiots don't change! 😋. Think Andy and you are probably right. Separate is better. And if you're not then I have someone to blame! 😄

Morning all

A bit more progress. Using this pic as a reference.

spacer.png

This is what the inside looks like now.

spacer.png

spacer.png

Bit of a gap to address.

spacer.png

Bit more work required to make this a bit more realistic including carpeting the inside.

So as I am going to put a spare wheel in the boot it's time for choices.

Do I go with this

spacer.png

Or that

spacer.png

I'm slightly leaning towards the second option at the mo.

Which brings me to another point. Since I need a fifth wheel hub would anyone who had this kit be open to a swap of the wheel hubs since two options are provided with the kit? I'll probably put a post in the exchange/swap section in a couple of days.

Thanks for looking, Nick

Doesn't look like you're too far away from the reference photo already, structurally

I'd say the second option looks more 'Chevelle' to me.

Option 2 looks more like a generic spare wheel, I think.  Terrific work so far though!

Great work and update.   Reference the spare wheel, firstly its not unheard of for the spare not to match the rest of the wheels.   If it was me I would make a mold and cast a new wheel for the spare (remembering you only need one side to be presentable).   Using Greenstuff World bluestuff and their acrylic resin it's a lot easier than you think, however if you don't have any there's going to be a cost involved.   My final suggestion would be to make a folded blanket out of milliput and place it on top of the missed matched wheel. - Andy

Option 1 is the 'SS' wheel, but I don't think they were available until the '69 model year - probably there because the kit shares parts with their '69 SS.  Option 2 is a Chevy 'Rally' wheel, which was optional for the '68 model.  The spare wouldn't have the centre cap or trim ring, and it would be mounted face down, with the base of the bumper jack (the black rectangular thing) screwed down onto it.    The stem of the bumper jack is the silver object sticking out underneath.

This is what a bare Rally wheel looks like, but, kind of moot because it would be the other way up...

Well that might make my life a bit easier! 😄. Still need to find a wheel though and no I don't have greenstuffworls blue stuff. I have seen it used before and it is a tempting option (please note I have not looked at cost at this point!)

Thanks six97 for the info. I have to admit I know nothing about the car and it's various models through the years. Good to know it was mounted with the front of the wheel facing down. I'll see if I can replicate that with what I have. Although I am aiming for more realistic I have still a long way to go before I can say historically accurate!

Thanks again all for your feedback.

Morning all

I wasn't happy with leaving the inside of the boot flat so I found this...

spacer.png

And started doing this ...

spacer.png

And ended up with this!

spacer.png

So due to measurement error creep etc it is not an exact replica but it will do. The styrene sheet I used is a bit thick despite being sanded down but as I am going to carpet this using embossing powder I will press the powder down a bit on the raised areas only to minimise the appearance of height.

This is what it looks like in situe

spacer.png

And with the spare

spacer.png

Regarding that I have bought some whitemorph along with some greenstuffworld acrylic resin so I can make spare tyre.

I still need to tidy up the boot lid and then start getting the body prepped for primer and painting although that phase will have to wait for the warm weather to come back.

Thanks for looking, Nick

That - in fact the entire luggage compartment - is an incredible piece of work.  Beautifully executed.

Could have fooled me, top work.   Have you considered using textured paint instead of embossing powder? It's what I used un the underside of my honda city and it may be closer to the effect your after. - Andy

Is that the Zero paints stuff Andy? I bought a bottle years ago & have never got round to using it.
