PatG Posted November 1 Posted November 1 What differences/possible improvements are included in this years new tool/A55013 compared with the new-ish one that was originally released in 2012 as A01004, or is it just another re-box without any changes perhaps? Pat.
Stew Dapple Posted November 1 Posted November 1 Hi Pat, There's a review with pics here: Cheers, Stew 2
PatG Posted November 1 Author Posted November 1 Many thanks. So just a simplified version of the previous release but still looks pretty decent in terms of detail so I'm very tempted. Pat.
IanC Posted November 1 Posted November 1 It's a very nice kit. And no chance of snapping the control column on this one.. 🙂
treker_ed Posted November 1 Posted November 1 The starter kit is a completely different tooling to the 2012 kit. It's a much more simplified kit aimed at beginners, and not just a simplified version of the earlier one. Compare the sprue layout etc from the link above to this This is the 2012 tooling reissued.
Ed Russell Posted November 1 Posted November 1 The newer simplified kit addresses some of the shortcomings of the original in that the control column and aerial are much less likely to be broken when removed. If you still have an unbuilt older tooling, this helps a lot https://www.redroomodels.com/product/p-51d-f-51d-fiddly-bits-1-72/ Postage outside Australia makes it uneconomical to buy just that but there is a workaround.
PatG Posted November 2 Author Posted November 2 I'm guessing that the latest Eduard kit is significantly more detailed but is it any better than this or the previous more detailed Airfix version in terms of overall accuracy? Pat. 1
alt-92 Posted November 2 Posted November 2 I mean.... you can't miss this one - it's on the top of the review section.
Chuck1945 Posted November 2 Posted November 2 (edited) I’ve the 2012 boxing (basically completed as an D without the tail fillet), the reissue, and both Eduard versions. The 2012 edition had a control stick and an antenna, both of which were very prone breaking upon removal from the frame. The flaps and inner gear doors could be displayed down as was often seen. The reissue had a blob for the stick (I’ve a couple of the Red Roo replacement sets in case I actually get back to the Airfix kits). The easy assembly Airfix kit lacks the stick and antenna, the inner gear doors are molded closed and when I looked at the sprue shots (linked above) I didn’t pay attention to the flaps. Both kits look basically correct regarding shape. The Eduard kits are much more detail oriented and offer alternative parts for variations that occurred during P-51D production and present some potential assembly difficulties due to small parts and, at least for me, some vague instructions for assembling the trunking for the radiator and oil cooler. That said, the kits most likely for me to complete are the Eduard ones. Edited November 2 by Chuck1945 Correction for readability
Ed Russell Posted November 3 Posted November 3 3 hours ago, Chuck1945 said: easy assembly Airfix kit lacks the stick and antenna I have to confess I have not seen the easy-kit version and took people's word that the "problem was solved". I guess leaving them out does (kind of) solve the problem. So a serious build of either kit needs the Red Roo parts!

I’ve not “hands on” seen the easy build, my comment about stick and antenna is based on the frames shown in the review here that was linked above. Looking at the review again, there is an overscale antenna and the flaps are molded closed. Edited November 3 by Chuck1945 Corrected earlier observation
