Hi Jon

What gauge line did you use for the funnel stays?

I'll probably use a finer one, 70 denier/0.091mm for some of the other rigging and white thread for some of the signal halyards.

Funnel gratings fitted.

And then I thought I'd tackle the aft balcony (I presume that's what it's called ?)

It's far from perfect, but views without closeup, it's passable. Bending the lattice railing was a test, due to the actual shape, wouldn't want to to do that again, anytime soon.

Ammo MIG Acrylic Crystal.

I drilled out the scuttles and after painting the hull, but before fitting the deck, I dipped a cocktail stick in the above and poked it into the hole from behind. You can do it from the front, but more care is needed as the glaze dries very glossy.

Earlier on in this WIP, there are some photos of the rigging on this ship.

Also these photos show that there were 'cage' aerials stretching between the masts and from mast to bow or stern. Now, I've done a couple of cage aerials on a previous build, the Airfix 1/72 RAF Rescue launch, these I made with the usual thread stuck to rings I'd made from punching them out of plastic card.

I haven't got a punch smaller enough to make rings here, so I wandered about online and found, on the Starling Models site, WEM 1/350 Dreadnought Aerial Spreaders.

p?i=2aa3d335ef5506479741432b2bcb4c00

As you can see, they aren't very big.

But there is a slightly larger (?) problem. A

Although they all, in this photo, look like they ALL have holes at the end of the legs, this is NOT the case.

So they are not all usable, that said there are probably enough for this build.

BUT, I have no idea how to hold them and thread each hole, and then repeat this four three or four per aerial.

So, as it stands at the moment, I doubt very much I'll be adding 'cage' aerials to Agamemnon, I try to be accurate with my builds, but this could be a step too far.

Jon I had to drill or poke a sewing pin through to enlarge the holes

To hold in place I used a strip of Bluetak and threaded thin fuse wire along a long and painful way to do it I know.

I’ll try both those methods.

I did try an acupuncture needle, but it didn’t seem to work. I looked at the ‘hole’ through my jewellers loupe and it seemed that some have no hole at all. I will look closer.

Sorry I couldn’t get to at Telford, but I thought I’d better not bring you all this cold, we will meet one day.

Sorry you missed it Jon, wondered where you might have been. There was a gorgeous Agamemnon in the competition. Hopefully someone took a pic of it.

Just how many boats does one ship need ?

There is four more to add to the stern !

Hi Neil - sorry I failed to reach you and say hello,  Hope you enjoyed the show  - agree with you about the Agamemnon - ?1/200 scale.  Sadly not well  lit - there is a photo on FB - The torpedo nets on the ?port side were masterful.

My entirely model-addled brain remembers it as Mikasa with the lovely torpedo net mostly hidden against the wall. Too may models!

threading those cage aerials looks horrific. I don't know how you guys do it. The build is coming along really nicely Jon. Sorry you couldn't make it to Telford!

Maybe not, but I sort of value what little sanity AND eyesight I have left 😉

I have made cage aerials using those White Ensign spreaders by a rather backwards method.

I make a jig that is longer than the finished aerial from a flat piece of wood with a piece of plastic sheet set vertically on each end. The plastic pieces each have a hole drilled through that is the diameter of the finished assembly. I then thread fine copper wire through all the spreaders holes, pass the ends through the two holes, and fasten them around the circumference with tape after stretching them tight. I then spread out the spreaders along the wires at the correct intervals and glue them in position with tiny drops of superglue. Once everything is set, I use more wire to 'tie' the ends at the correct distance from the final spreaders and seal the tie with more superglue. Finally, I cut off the excess wires beyond the tie with a very sharp blade to leave only the single wires going to the terminal points on the masts or yards. The only problem is that I have to replace any plastic spars with brass because the cage aerials need to be under a little tension to 'set' properly.
