Airfix AT-AT [Completed]

A while back I picked up this kit for a bargain price. The box was tatty, pieces were separated from the sprues and the instructions were missing. It was all in the plastic bags thugh so no parts have gone missing.

 

Since this is a reboxing of the old MPC kit from 1981, I was able to download the instructions from Scalemates.

 

 

As is the nature of some of these old kits the fit of the maib body is a bit ropy with large gaps at certain joints but was able to fill and smooth them reasonably well

 

 

I've constructed a base using some fine-grained claycrete/papier-mache with some Tetrion filler mixed in

 

 

The kit comes with some miniature Snow-speeders and turrets which have been painted up appropriately

 

 

and the AT AT itself is ready to head back out to the shed after some priming and pre-shading

This is such a great classic old kit, I loved making it when it first made the shelves back in the 80's. Perfect for a diorama too.

...and done! This was a fun build! 

 

I decided to put some 'splinter' snow camo on the AT AT just to be differnt and then dirtied it all down appropriately. I'm happy with the result!

 

 

 

 

 

Need to give the edges of the base a bit of a clean I think now having seen these pics

A very nice diorama and looking forward to seeing it. I've seen so so many attempts to do something with AT-AT kits and this one is a little gem - you've got the best from all the box contents there in a nice tight space.

Brilliant recycling of an antique kit. The Snowspeeder on the ground about to be crushed is a nice touch which evokes bathos (an impactful touch for the Rebel crew if they're still strapped in!) I think I once saw an AT-AT diorama in a magazine where the modeller had attached a Snowspeeder to the giant vehicle with a stiff length of wire, like a lasso, thereby cleverly suspending the little flyer in mid-air.
