Battle of San Carlos? Falklands War? 

The San Carlos River is in the Falklands and bird could be the Harrier (jump jet). Not sure about the "knives" though or their annual rainfall levels...

You are right!

The knife could be the IAI Dagger.

It could indeed. I just came to that conclusion myself but couldn't remember the name of the IAI version of the Mirage 5 at the time...!

BTW it's San Carlos Sound not river 😁

Lol, cryptic clues have never been my strong suit but the J29 was rather portly (albeit fast) and Winnie's (Churchill) big bad neighbour was the USSR... 

Will come up with another one in a bit, lol. Need to fire up the old brain cells...
