Hunter Rose Posted October 25 Posted October 25 IMG_20241021_161840433 by Nick Frost, on Flickr This was a miniature I had my eye on for a while, I loved the idea of him being bathed in the light from a fireplace but shied away from object source lighting as I didn't feel confident I'd be able to do it. But now I've done a few figures and seeing @rockpopandchips give it a go I figured I'd jump in with both feet and have a crack at new challenge. So the plan is, he's in a pitch black room lit from the front at an angle by the fire, and in the opposite direction from a bit higher by moonlight coming through a window behind him. So the start point for him is after giving him a spray with some chaos black primer, he got 2 coats of vallejo dark sea blue as the base coat. But the first step I want to do is get the moonlight highlights sorted, so that's what I will be doing next. Thanks for looking, more soon 6
rockpopandchips Posted October 25 Posted October 25 Nice looking mini, I will defo follow along to see how you get on with this. 1

Yeah the flesh of gods ones are really good, there's hundreds of different ones with some pretty crazy characters and monsters. Now I just hope I can do it justice!! 1
Hunter Rose Posted October 29 Author Posted October 29 Right, about time I got an update sorted! Im starting with the moonlight side on this guy, and the theory is all the colours are going to be how they appear at night in the dark. So for that they will all have the dark sea blue mixed in to give a night version of the colour that leans more to wards green and blue as the human eye sees more of that spectrum at night (a bit of science for you too!) Im starting with the helmet which will be the brightest part so on the wet pallete was some white, dark sea blue, caledor sky and some vallejo sunny skin tone (this is just to use in very small amounts to make it a little greeny if needed) IMG_20241027_083145375 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then just started to sketch out where the highlights will go with some of the dark sea blue mixed with a bit of the caledor sky and just a touch of white and then just increased the white and blue levels a bit to build up my highlights on the edges and high spots IMG_20241027_083652134 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241027_083950027 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241027_085820620 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241027_090615593 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Im jumping forward a little here, to where I had finished up starting the colours of the back of the chair for the red quilted padding and the wood, but I really hadn't committed to the colours and wasn't super happy with it (which is why I jumped forward as I painted over most of it anyway) IMG_20241027_214200 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I wanted the wood of the chair to be more brown and the red to be more obviously red in comparison. So I mixed some mournefang brown in with the previous mix and had at it again, I have also been refining the highlights of the helmet as I go (I never know when to leave things alone or stop!) and adding some khorne red to get a mauve colour to my chair padding to give it a red feeling. IMG_20241028_202046 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241028_203037 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241028_203057 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I also then moved on to the metal scabbard, doing a similar thing to the helmet although not quite as bright as its further away and did another dark brown mix for the leather strap around it at the top. IMG_20241028_204119 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241028_204132 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So that is where things are currently at, next up I will start the back of his head and shoulders/arms with the moonlight highlights. Thanks for looking, more soon 7
Hunter Rose Posted November 1 Author Posted November 1 Thanks Mike! I've got the moonlight highlights done now on the back. First thing I did was to glaze over the chair with some dark sea blue mixed with a little caledor sky to get it back more on the blue spectrum to suit the night lighting. Then I got the highlights on the flesh and hair done using the same mix I glazed the chair with but adding some cadian flesh for the skin and rhinox hide to the hair just to give a vague impression of their colours in the moonlight. IMG_20241031_204605 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241031_204620 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next it's time for the fun bit, the fire light effect. So it's back out in to the cold shed to airbrush on some mephiston red from my fire direction as the shadow base coat (I'll probably do a white base coat first to help get a strong colour) After that I'll build up highlights with the brush working towards orange and some yellow towards the brightest areas close to the fire especially the metal bits. Thanks for looking, more soon 6
Hunter Rose Posted November 3 Author Posted November 3 Did a bit of airbrushing today so just wanted to do a little update. So I want to get my shadow colour for the fire light sprayed, I guess this is basically what I normally do with zenithal priming in that I'm spraying from the direction of my light and then this points out where my highlights need to go. The difference with this is it's the light direction but also the colour I need too, which I will then build on by adding orange to build up the highlights which are brighter the closer they are to the source. So anyway, after a quick blast of white just to help the red get good opacity I took some mephiston red and added just a couple of drops of orange (only because I felt a bit unsure about shooting straight pure red in case it seemed a bit off or too dark) then holding the airbrush in the direction of my fictional fireplace I sprayed the red light on. IMG_20241103_155301 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241103_155310 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241103_155331 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I'm really pleased with that, the green blue base coat is a great contrast for the red already and you can start to see the effect I'm going for. Next up I'll start building up the highlights, focusing on the bright bits first like the metal and the bits of him that are closest. Thanks for looking, more soon 7
Yg Models Posted November 4 Posted November 4 (edited) nice result. i don't use airbrush, can't do this effect easily. Edited November 4 by Yg Models 1

rockpopandchips Posted November 4 Posted November 4 That was a brave move with the AB but the result is looking great. 1
Hunter Rose Posted November 5 Author Posted November 5 13 hours ago, rockpopandchips said: That was a brave move with the AB but the result is looking great. Thanks Brian, yeah it was pretty daunting and I did loads of practice spraying before to make sure it had no splatter and was spraying okay. Sounds really daft but I think I only put two small drops of orange in the red just because my brain kept screaming at me ”you're spraying pure red at this what the hell are you doing!” I have started brush painting the highlights so I should have an update soon. 1
Hunter Rose Posted November 6 Author Posted November 6 Okay, I've been having some fun with fire so time to share! I started with the boots, by adding a bit of troll slayer orange to my mephitson red I began to boost the bright areas and do some edge highlighting, at this point it feels a bit similar to doing nmm IMG_20241104_202916 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241104_202921 by Nick Frost, on Flickr As they are metal combined with being the closest part to the fire I threw some yellow on to the bright spots to boost the highlights IMG_20241104_204210 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then moved on to the gauntlet on the floor next to him, want that to be bright obviously as also metal but not as bright as the boots as its further away so stayed away from yellow for this one so didn't take it beyond the red and orange stage. IMG_20241104_204230 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241104_204733 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241104_204933 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241104_222325 by Nick Frost, on Flickr As I was working on this I kept looking at the moonlight side and decided the highlights their needed to be a bit bolder and would reach a little more of the helmet on the right hand side than I had done, so I brightened them up with the same mix of dark sea blue, caledor sky and white but just more white. IMG_20241105_173647 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241105_173713 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241105_173731 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I switched back to the fire light side, and did some extreme highlights on the metal bits just to really sell that they are metal. IMG_20241105_201921 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I added the firelight to the floor to show where its shining out, kept this to a thin red base coat, then built up the orange gradually in the bit closest to the fire, and started to build up the highlights on the folds of his trousers and the cat IMG_20241105_204420 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241105_204808 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And as I said because I cant leave things alone, I boosted the highlights of the padding at the back of the chair and the edge highlights IMG_20241105_205730 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I think that whole side is looking a lot better now, everything just needed to be a bit more obvious and brighter. From the below angle you can already get a good idea of the contrast, you can also see I slightly highlighted the part of the helmet that is just in the line of the light from the fire, as its metal I'll probably boost this one at some point. IMG_20241105_205748 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Using some orange I punched the cats highlights a little more, as well as the floor highlights and started to place some on the chair at the bottom between his legs, and I did paint the inside of his left arm too. IMG_20241105_205810 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats where its at so far, next I'll start working my way up to his belt and torso, I may also go over the bright highlights on the metal with a little orange/yellow as I think I've made them a bit too cool. Thanks for looking, more soon 6
Shotandshell Posted November 6 Posted November 6 Astounding work. You always come up with some great stuff Nick but this is bound to be one of your best pieces! 1

Hunter Rose Posted November 7 Author Posted November 7 Cheers Yg! Just a tiny update, i got the extreme highlights on the boots sorted by brushing over some yellow with a bit if orange to warm them up, and while i had the colours on the pallet i boosted the highlight on the helmet IMG_20241106_203655 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241106_203714 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241106_203730 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So now I'll move on to the upper body in the next proper update. Thanks for looking, more soon 6
Hunter Rose Posted November 10 Author Posted November 10 Been doing more on this guy so its time for an update! I moved on to the torso and i was concentrating on not mucking it up so bad i didn't take a lot of in progress pics I'm afraid. Starting with a reddish orange i started building the highlights and brightening them slightly as i went. I'm very conscious of not wanting to go too bright on things that are far away from the light source and screw up how it looks. IMG_20241108_204646 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241108_204633 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241108_204653 by Nick Frost, on Flickr At this point i wanted to brighten the highlights overall on the boots so that when i boost the highlight's on the further away bits like the face there is still a difference in brightness. So i glazed over some troll slayer orange on the boots and then i went back and further highlighted the face and hair. I also extended some if the darker red orange highlights on the trouser creases into the dark area so when you look at an angle there are lots if places that look like they sre just catching the light to boost the osl effect. IMG_20241109_202540 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241109_202609 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241109_202625 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241109_202636 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241109_202816 by Nick Frost, on Flickr If i tilt it up you can see all the highlights a lot better IMG_20241109_202839 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And in the below angle you can see what i mean about extending some of the highlights to show more areas catching the warm light if the fire IMG_20241109_202847~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So i think he's not far off done, I'll just tweak the highlights here and there (because again i cant leave things alone!) and then it will be painting black around the edge of the base and final pics. Thanks for looking, more soon 8
AdrianMF Posted November 13 Posted November 13 Wow. Not how I'd visualised it when I started reading the thread but fantastic work! It looks like it has leapt from the pages of a comic book. Very nice. Regards, Adrian 1

It looks like it has leapt from the pages of a comic book. Very nice. Regards, Adrian Thanks Adrian, appreciate the compliment! Just a teeny update, hes now pretty much finished. Ive just glazed some flash gitz yellow over the boots to really punch the brightness to make sure they really are the brightest bit and push the metal look. And i have gone over and done a little more edge highlighting on the edges of the chair and sword and increasing slightly thecsize of some of the highlights. IMG_20241113_220610 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241113_220621 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Oh and i did also paint black around the edge of the base. I may do some tiny tweaks here and there but I've got a new little led photo box thingy coming tomorrow so I'll take some decent pics over the weekend for the rfi. Hopefully i can do a decent job i feel like the photos come out a little more red than it actually is but hey ho I'll get it sorted. Its been great doing this though, my next one is going to have some osl effects too so its been a good learning experience to practice. I must say though the only little thing i would do differently if i could start again would be to have made the base coat colour slightly lighter on his skin and the cat just so there was a little contrast in the shadows to help show they are different colours. That was a tricky thing to think about in the beginning because i was thinking he's in a pitch black room so its either lit or not, but now I've done it its helped me to figure it out in my brain for next time. But anyway, as i said next up will be final pics. Thanks for looking, more soon 7
Hunter Rose Posted November 16 Author Posted November 16 All done! I got the photos sorted out, I've got a new little photo box which has taken the faff out of my photo taking! IMG_20241115_201513 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Photos have been a bit tricky throughout as the light effect goes from really dark to really bright which throws my phone cameras sensors off a bit! But i decided to use a black background for the pics as it is set in a dark room anyway and i think it sets the OSL effect off really well. Heres a link to the RFI:- Thanks for following along, I'll be back with another project very soon 3
