Has anybody ever done these?

I found RB did/planned a Fokker E.I wing, but never seen one in the wild.

Several aircraft with translucent wings could do with such an upgrade, paper for the skin, and some tensioning laquer,  and Bob's your uncle!

I have seen good results with paint trickery,  but it's not the same....

LACI (by Ladislav Hancar) do (did?) a 1/72 Pou du Ciel like that:

However, I filled the 'skeleton' wings to make fabric-covered wings exactly to my taste.. It was a delicate operation, because the 3D prints are very, very delicate.

In a similar vein to AIM72, Eduard did about a dozen 'Stripdown' kits in 72th and 48nd - plastic parts with much photoetch for the wings and empennage.

I shall build my dH.2 one day...

OOo... also... Hasegawa make a skeleton 1/16 F.1 Camel in 1/32.

I have the Hasegawa 1/16 kit .

was thinking more of kits like :

Fokker E series
DeHavilland DH.2
Early Albatrosses
Bristol Scout
Caudron G.III
Jeannin Stahltaube

for me personally, the Scout, Caudron, and the E.I.
