This is the replacement panel I’ve designed.

I shall now add print supports and get it printed.

Printing has finished and it is now set to allow excess resin run off.  As soon as I’ve finished typing this I will go and start the washing/curing of the printed panels.  Photos to follow in due course.

The finished parts have gone through the washing/curing process and I’ve test fitted one panel.  Here is a photo of same:

A smidgen of filler and light sanding and polishing should see this sorted.  Whilst waiting for the printing process to complete I also opened the oil cooler apertures in the inboard leading edge of the wings.  I need to drill out the cannon ports and the hole for the pitot tube.

I really like what you are doing with this build. Tackling those areas which have to be sorted while still keeping as much of whats original as possible. You are really showing a refreshing  and thought provoking approach to modelling  not just   those kits with a long history, but everything.

You’ll be on 1G then?

Some of the time, but I do wander around now and again to some of the other sigs and some of the retailers.

Nice work on the gun chutes! I think I just talked myself into taking my own advice on my never ending 1/32 Matchbox F22 effort-once I finally defeat the cannon bulges!

Looking great! Well done to have created the panel so quickly!

Just now I am sorting out the wing mounted lights, I hope to have them fitted and their lenses attached this afternoon.

Progress continues, I’ve punched out the clear lamp lenses with masking tape in position, these have been attached with Glue’n’Glaze so I’m waiting on them drying.  In addition, I fitted the under fuselage light and punched out an orange tinted cover, again with masking tape attached (so much easier than trying to create masks at the paint stage).  This is a cruelly enlarged photo of the wing lights - they are little more than 3mm in diameter, they will be fitted once the G’n’G has dried and I’ve marked the orientation on the bottom of the support base.

The wing tip nav lights have been created using a U/V resin nail varnish (better value for money than ‘lazer glue pens’).  I used a U/V LED torch to harden the material then shaped them with 400 grit followed by polishing with 3000 then 12,000 micromesh.  Because the green/red were created using coloured bulbs rather than coloured covers I will have to remove the clear resin to add some red/green spots.

Slight revision to the nav lights, they were removed easily enough and I’ve decided to revise the creation of nav lights.  I’ve drilled into the wing tip and added a short length of fine rod I’ll trim and paint that before adding resin again, shaping and polishing.

I was about to add the new resin ‘nav light cover’ to the starboard wing when I realised the ‘bulb’ was red!  I’ve no idea how I managed that especially given that the port ‘bulb’ was …… red!  Just in case, I checked that the green paint wasn’t affected by U/V light - it wasn’t; fortunately the ‘bulb’ remained in place when I removed the resin and I’ve re-done the thing!

Elsewhere, the prop hub is now deep red, the prop blade tips yellow and the fuselage Tamiya primer grey.

The nav light ‘bulb’ correction has been completed and I’m waiting on the Tamiya Clear green to dry, after that, out with the nail varnish and U/V source.  I’ve elected to use HATAKA lacquer ‘Sky’ for the fuselage band and that should go on later today.  I’ve had mixed results with HATAKA but fingers crossed, it will have plenty of time to dry as I don’t think the grey and green cammo will be going on before SMW.

‘My’ Hawker paint shop has determined that Tamiya XF4 is a great representation of ‘Hawker yellow’.  The U/C bays and insides of the doors have been suitably airbrushed:

In addition, the prop has been assembled and is sitting on the ‘gearbox’ (posing if you will), the sky band on the rear fuselage is barely discernible against the grey, but it is there.

I think that is about as far as I can get for now.  I need to get sorted for SMW at the weekend, immediately followed by a week in mid Wales.  I don’t think I can justify dragging the Tempest bits along though.

I’ll be looking out for Perdu and Gondor at Telford - any anyone else from here who is attending.

my description:

grey/white hair (but possibly a black baseball hat with RAF insignia).

green top with ‘IPMS SWINDON’ and ‘TONY’ embroidered

additional name badge with TeeELL possibly.

Look forward to meeting.

I did manage to get hold of a Special Hobbies Tempest II at SMW however, I will continue this Matchbox build.

Nice to put a face to the name at Telford Tony, one of few unfortunately so I have very little idea of who most of the people here are. I had such a good show that I have managed to book my hotel for next year.

It was good to meet you too, next year then?   Perhaps if the Tempest/Typhoon/Sea Hawk SIG are displaying my Matchbox Tempest might be there (otherwise it’ll be on the Swindon stand).

Great transformation, turning a toy into a scale model!

Regards,

Adrian

Thanks Adrian,

it is only worth it because the creators made an accurate toy in the first place.  It isn’t a ‘sow’s ear’ that I am trying to turn into a silk purse.  The Matchbox Tempest stands up well when compared to the scale drawings.
