Harrysgrandad Posted October 13, 2024 Posted October 13, 2024 Right, a new WIP, we’ll sort of…….. Started this kit nearly ten years ago when I first got back into modelling, it’s the Trumpeter kit of Dreadnought in her 1907 guise, have always thought this was a brilliant ship and showed the world we could still ‘cut it’. 10 years ago means no 3D printing so it was the kit, a wooden deck and as much aftermarket (PE and brass barrels, masts and yardarms) as I could afford. I decided to resurrect this and try to complete it, now I’m in a bit of a dilemma as to whether i supplement the aftermarket with some 3D printing or just go with what I have, upgrade wise. The MM parts are superb and I am sorely tempted! However from the pics below (which show the current state of play) you will notice the funnels are somewhat bare, this is because I had a real problem with the funnel’s PE tension stays provided with the Eduard set (they just don’t fit!). So, apart from the PE top grills and some ladders I stripped everything back and removed the mouldings that I assume were meant to represent the stays on the original kit. Going to have another go with the Eduard PE (although it’s a bit mangled) and see if I can save them, if not will definitely be ordering the funnels from MM (which look ‘the dogs’) plus a load of other bits as well to make the postage work. Going to stick with the kit 12 pounders and main armament (which have new barrels and PE) which I have already built, ditto the ships boats as I am OK with these (and there’s a lot to replace!) but will replace the PE coal scuttles with MM ones, sticking with the PE watertight doors and hatches (again already partly done), will replace the cruddy searchlights with MM parts, also going to bulk up the MM order with some other bits and pieces. I have also not used the PE torpedo net ‘shelves’? as they don’ fit with the wooden deck in place, just used some plastic strip (based on the AOTS drawings and the Kagero renders) then I need to source some nets (not sure where to go with this - help and advice please). I have probably missed some bits (it was nearly ten years ago and memory is getting fuzzy) so if stuff leaks back into the great matter as I go through the build will add it as ‘editors notes’! What’s left of the PE that has not yet been used, notice the Ariel spreaders - I will NOT be attempting those! 23 1

Why not use the spreaders it is very therapeutic to add these I used them on my Lord Nelson build. I used some fine relay wire to thread the eight lengths through the spreader but had to drill the holes a little wider Some people use the USHI thread for this. Work so far is looking very good. Were they PE? just actually taken mine from the packet for the first time, they do have minute holes!!!!! How on earth did you drill them out???? 1

I also used the White Ensign same as in your photo I placed them flat on the cutting mat and lightly drilled using a 0.02 bit to widen the holes slightly. beefy 1
Harrysgrandad Posted October 14, 2024 Author Posted October 14, 2024 Well, here is the situation with the funnels and tension wires. Fore funnel wires look like they might be saved, aft funnel ones look beyond redemtion, especially regarding how fickle PE can be once it’s lost it’s original shape🤬. at bottom off pic is a quick attempt to replicate the wires using 0.2mm brass rod, might persue this line of attack for an hour or so to see if I can make a fist of it with the rod. If the rod idea works I may prime the funnels before adding the wires, less paint layers to clog up the detail🤔. If not, an extra item on the MM order😜. 5
Harrysgrandad Posted October 14, 2024 Author Posted October 14, 2024 Overlong Eduard stay and my brass rod attempt. doesn’t look this bad to the naked eye. 8
Harrysgrandad Posted October 14, 2024 Author Posted October 14, 2024 2 hours and numerous attempts later, straps on fore funnel. Looks OK to the naked eye, although after that session MY eyes have gone ‘off piste’🤪 Think I will go with this (after cleaning excess glue off). It will save £18 off the MM order. 10 1
robgizlu Posted October 14, 2024 Posted October 14, 2024 Suffering for your art!!! It looks great - it was worth the suffering Don't know any thing about WW1 ships but this is already looking rather special Rob 1

Harrysgrandad Posted October 15, 2024 Author Posted October 15, 2024 All of the straps are now on 🤪 I have tried to add the brackets at the foot of the straps based on the Eduard PE (there’s one of these placed on the left hand funnel as ref - haven’t got a hope in hell of copying that shape!). I used 80gsm art paper spotted with a drop of Gator’s Grip, I started by gluing a strip along the base of the funnel then cut back the excess when it cured, not sure if I like the end result although, again, it doesn’t look too bad to the naked eye. After reference to AOTS and the Kagaro drawings the Eduard PE seems quite oversize, I will give them a blast of primer and if they look rubbish will dispense with them, the actual brackets are really small, comparatively, so I might just leave them off altogether, unfortunately I could not save enough of the Eduard bits to use their part, it does look better than my paper effort! 10
Harrysgrandad Posted October 15, 2024 Author Posted October 15, 2024 Back on her ‘dry dock’ ready to add some more superstructure. 12
Harrysgrandad Posted October 16, 2024 Author Posted October 16, 2024 added the Admirals walk and most of the boat deck frame, that was VERY fiddly🤪. 14 1
beefy66 Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 Very neat work so far love these old dreadnought's. Stay Safe beefy 1

Hi Beefy I notice your reference to HMS Lord Nelson, this is on my ‘to buy’ list, is it worth the price? I notice you have a WIP, so will take a look at that. Cheers Graham 1
beefy66 Posted October 18, 2024 Posted October 18, 2024 HI Graham, I enjoyed my Lord Nelson build only things I added where the wooden deck and the dreaded cage spreaders. The finish was not that good could have made a bit more of the end joints they look to heavy to me. Stay Safe beefy 1
Harrysgrandad Posted October 20, 2024 Author Posted October 20, 2024 Base colour on reworked funnels. Think they look OK, so moving on, a little bit of shadowing and weathering next when the base coat has cured. 6
Harrysgrandad Posted October 24, 2024 Author Posted October 24, 2024 Bob’s buckles added to the aft funnel, plus some weathering. Broke my last 0.3mm drill on the the other funnel so waiting on postman😝. @robgizlu I did order some 0.2mm drills (as per your suggestion) but can’t use them, they are too bendy and don’t fit tightly into my pinvice🤬. Still got a full packet, they are yours if you want them. doesn’t look this c**p to the naked eye🤪. 4
Harrysgrandad Posted October 24, 2024 Author Posted October 24, 2024 Also, after much deliberation, I have decided to finish her just using the bits I have to hand and save up to buy a stock lot of various parts from MicroMaster. I plan to build the Academy Graf Spee in the near future, the Arfix kit was my first ever model back in 1963 so this will be full circle, MM have some nice bits for this and I plan to pack the order out with loads of RN bits for later builds and the spares box, this will probably be a three figure (+) spend😝. 1

Hi Graham - That's a very kind offer - however buy this and see if they can't be used.......... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393839558352?_skw=Pin+vise&var=662465939648&itmmeta=01JAZ0122HN4NKM9K9R3H1RR9H&hash=item5bb2aabed0:g:SwsAAOSwoydWjj6v&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4HoV3kP08IDx%2BKZ9MfhVJKms%2BDUmkz40mXjv7d%2BfZ7%2BqAjGGwgbpgJKlj%2B6zOp8de6f3VQuBjGZi%2Foj6Ft9ZKw3dexmH0Leb5C9D9sNLmVCYVt77Hoc16MxCzbrRcgEO4QWI4HnqLfys%2FjQPzT%2FHX%2FbCkKJ3MEcCzYd28IXb4j9SOaOTmuc%2FKbWKfW4k1V3uk30K%2B1jcxzpBjHU7he2K8iW3KFFz%2F5eUovekWVxCqlUThqoAMqMo%2BsJvq3EiptghqHjRCqEphmWJFn0Hfaye%2FHblYkowBVCQr0t9xdXbJEdl|tkp%3ABk9SR7ShhODXZA 1 hour ago, Harrysgrandad said: Also, after much deliberation, I have decided to finish her just using the bits I have to hand and save up to buy a stock lot of various parts from MicroMaster. Don't forget - if the value of the goods is more than £135 you face a liklihood of paying UK import duty which is hefty!!! Guess how I found out!! The build is looking very Tidy Rob 1
Harrysgrandad Posted October 24, 2024 Author Posted October 24, 2024 Added some coal dust stains the deck areas around the scuttle covers, might have overdone it a bit😜. _ 5

The build is looking very Tidy Rob Hi Rob l have that pinvice, bought it at the same time as the drills (from your previous web links), this Is the one that won’t hold the drills securely there appears to be a slight circular hole and the vice just doesn’t have enough grip, wonder if they are all like this, this is a bad one or I just made it like that over-tightening it on a larger drill bit! Take your point re the import duty, taxed on everything - you can’t even die without paying tax!!! 2
