ArnoldAmbrose Posted October 22 Posted October 22 G'day, I imagine that a model of this would be quite thirsty, paint-wise. Sorry if this has been asked and I missed, it, but are you doing her as built, with four secondary turrets, or as refitted with the wing turrets removed and extra twin 5-inch added? The book covers in Pascal's (aka @Iceman 29) post shows both. Regards, Jeff.
steve5 Posted October 22 Author Posted October 22 I'm afraid i can't answer you jeff , i am no historian on this matter , I was simply going with what came out of the box . 3
ArnoldAmbrose Posted October 22 Posted October 22 2 hours ago, steve5 said: I was simply going with what came out of the box . G'day Steve, the footprint of the superstructure in the last two photos is very narrow. Will there be a triple 155mm turret outboard of it on either side (you can see a slight indent either side to allow the turrets to train outboard), or will there be additions to the superstructure to be placed there? In Pascal/Iceman's post the photo of the 'blue/grey' book shows the original layout with a wing turret visible, the 'red' book shows the second version of the ship with the turret gone and the superstructure spread outwards. The box art in your opening post seems to show the second version of the ship (and creeked my neck while looking 😁) but box art has been known to be wrong. Don't stress over it, I'm just interested. 🙂 Time will no doubt tell. Regards, Jeff. 1
steve5 Posted October 24 Author Posted October 24 the hull painted , now for the 1001 pieces of deck furniture , 4 2
steve5 Posted October 24 Author Posted October 24 when I looked at the pictures , the deck was just too bright and orange so I gave it a bit of weathering , it's not as blotchy in real life , plus there is a lot of deck furniture to go on yet . I also tried to make it a bit darker around the turret bases . 11

I also tried to make it a bit darker around the turret bases . Good on you breaking the trend. The trend seems to be depicting teak or Yamato's cypress wood, with a yellowish wood color or "deck tan" color (Tamiya XF-78 for example) basically straight from the bottle. It never really looks right to me ...but could be right if the planks were fresh from the sawmill and you're building a commissioning day Yamato, absolutely brand new. Many build models that way, in prototype/pristine form and or as a decorative piece mounted on a walnut base supported by brass finials. The other trend is ultra realism or a diorama 'moment in time' depiction. For an in-service vessel with weathering and sun effects, I suppose the closest real-world analog is to look at any color photographs of the Iowa class battleships. There's photos of them at sea in the 60-80's after reactivation, photos of them in mothballs and photos of them now as museum ships. I think the right deck color for an in-service vessel is a combination taken from all three states: a light grayish brown(?). The caveat for light grayish brown is a sunny day and calm seas. If the weather is rough, rainy or there's constant spray keeping the decks damp, then it will be one or more shades darker. A major offender is those real wooden decks for models. Many look like fresh cut yellow pine but more yellow than that. Anyway, I'm enjoying your build. What a monster kit. 🍿 Edited October 24 by Harquebus 2 1
Iceman 29 Posted October 24 Posted October 24 Indeed, I think you can think of this kind of shade. Yamato Nichimo 1/200: https://www.thewebernets.com/2015/04/06/super-detailing-1200-nichimo-yamato-by-tsukurimaseu/ Artwox produced a wooden deck for the Yamato in a charcoal-grey hue, only to be used if the ship is depicted on its last suicide mission in 1945. This was to make her less conspicuous at night. The wooden deck had been oiled and soaked: from October '45 (sources: combined-fleet website and Yoshida Mitsuru's book), therefore valid for the battle of Leyte (the only one in which it fired its big guns) and the final battle. But everyone does as they please. 7
steve5 Posted October 24 Author Posted October 24 thanks harquebus , I did know it was the wrong colour , I have quite a few all grey models now , I just wanted a bit of colour on this one . that is some build iceman , it went straight into my favs , I could not come close to it , but hopefully will get inspiration from it . 1 1
steve5 Posted October 26 Author Posted October 26 deck furniture and some gun emplacements going in 5
steve5 Posted October 27 Author Posted October 27 just hit a bit of a snag , it says to place ZH4 , but there is no ZH sprue , anyone know how to get in touch with trumpeter ? 3
S-boat 55 Posted October 27 Posted October 27 (edited) That's a pain, I did once get a response from trumpeter, it wasn't the most helpful to be honest, I'll try and find the email I used for them, As an aside are you sure it's not in the box somewhere, from looking at a review of the kit, ZH isn't a sprue but instead a series of separately mould deck fittings/pieces, they don't appear to be shown in the instructions parts overview which is a fairly massive faux pas on trumpeters part:/, review below, http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/ships/ijn/bb/Yamato-200-gal/200Yamato.htm No idea if that helps ? Sam Edited October 27 by S-boat 55 1 1
steve5 Posted October 27 Author Posted October 27 found it , I suddenly realised , one of the bags had 5 sprues in it not 4 , there it was zh , if anyone does go for this kit , really check everything out good , prior to starting . as I have said , even the numbers are not quite right in places . 4
Iceman 29 Posted October 27 Posted October 27 It happens with the PE too, always well recounted the boards. I had the case with Pontos, it's the second time and twice with the BNA seller in Australia... They wouldn't listen. It's up to them to check their product before shipping it, regarding the price. 1
steve5 Posted October 28 Author Posted October 28 I hear you iceman . the reels anchor chains and anchors in , the anchors aren't painted yet , got an idea in my head for them . 6
ArnoldAmbrose Posted October 28 Posted October 28 G'day Steve, that's a nice touch with the anchor a-cockbill. It shows why the ship had a wide bow, so the anchor when dropped would clear the bulbous bow at the forefoot. And your photos in your previous posts seem to answer an earlier question of mine - those gun positions along the deck edge show that your model will portray the ship after her refit. Regards, Jeff. 1
steve5 Posted October 28 Author Posted October 28 sorry I couldn't answer your question before jeff , now I know though , the superstructure is starting to go together . 6
S-boat 55 Posted October 28 Posted October 28 That's a nice way to do the anchors, I might do that on some of mine, If you could finish yours by January for when I start mine I'd be very grateful, that way I can keep nicking good ideas of yours 😉 3
steve5 Posted October 28 Author Posted October 28 the reason I did mine like that on the box art , they show a guy painting said anchors , thought i might have a go at it , 😁 4
steve5 Posted October 29 Author Posted October 29 some PE work done , after looking at the pics , a bit of realigning is in order , 6
steve5 Posted October 30 Author Posted October 30 believe it or not there is 75 pieces in this little guy , there were a few more but were too small for me , and the carpet monster ate 2 , how you blokes work in 1/700 is beyond me 🤨, 11
