Faraway
I'm preparing the way for this, my next build, a lot smaller than Hermione and more my usual size. I'm thinking that this time I'll venture into the dark arts of 'weathering', having watched that master @robgizlu and his current build HMS Avon Vale, which is looking lovely, I feel inspired or slightly bonkers, take your pick. I think I'm leaning towards bonkers. So she'll be on a sea base which I suppose will have to show a choppy sea, I usually do flat calm, but it's time to push the skill levels a bit. Any help achieving this will be MOST welcome. First will be to order some goodies from Micro Master, and as I'm soon to depart for France now is a good time. The MM parts will replace the Radar Lantern, Quad Machine Gun, DC Rail, the 27' Whaler and the 16' Dinghy. I already have 20mm Oerlikons, 4" main gun and Carley floats from Black Cat. So all being equal she should turn out alright. But in the meantime, here are the kit parts.

Faraway
The shipping forecast has gone from choppy seas to a gentle swell. I've stuck the two hull halves together, if the water had been flat calm I could probably got away with using the waterline to half, but there should be a bit of red showing. Just need to get the colour right, so I will be experimenting of some foam offcuts. I'm going to use acrylic water, so the time between layers is long, as this stuff doesn't dry very fast. Niall
These ships operated in the North Sea escorting coastal convoys, so the sea colours should be more green than blue. One other thing, the author Nicholas Monserrat was the 1st lieutenant on 1 of the batch 3 ships and captain of the other surviving batch 3 ship. He wrote 2 articles on his experience with these ships(along with his experiences as an officer on 2 Flower Class corvettes) in the book "Three Corvettes".
neilh
Hi Jon, I have loads of that Acrylic paste that dries white left over if you want to experiment when you get back.

Faraway
The base is coming on, but I might have got it a bit too green, we'll see. A dry fit of the bridge, funnel etc. And I've added the Bob's Buckles. And some goodies from Micro Master. Radar Lantern, Quad Barrel Machine Guns, short DC Rails, 27' Whaler and 16' Dinghy. The detail of these 3D parts is superb. Jon 6
Faraway
Before I assemble the Radar Lantern, does anyone know the colour of the inside of it ? I doubt it'll be visible once I've glazed it, but as the saying goes.......'I know its there' Jon
foeth
Made from wood, so perhaps as as simple as a wooden varnish? The windows are opaque and you should not be able to see the interior?

The windows are opaque and you should not be able to ser the interior? I thought the windows were opaque, they certainly are in any film I’ve seen. Last question. What were the ‘windows’ made of ? I guess not glass ? Jon
foeth
So, I dived in my Radar book collection (Howse, D, Radar at Sea, The Royal Navy in World War 2 ) "To make the aerial assembly watertight, the office was surmounted by a lantern-like structure of teak pillars framing flat perspex windows, the sand-blasting of which served to stop casual observation of the dipoles which could reveal the wavelength being used So, if you can see the cheese aerial of the type 271 you've committed a security breach 3
Faraway
Thanks @foeth Sand blasted Perspex ! If I add a little white paint to my glazing medium, that should work. Jon

Faraway
Radar Lantern. I'll remove the one from the kit, from its platform. Which I now know is to be glazed with frosted perspex. But of experimenting with glazing medium, white paint and small holes. Hull done. WA Green NARN38 & WA Blue NARN39, whilst I've still got Colourcoats paint I will use them. The white is Model Air Insignia White 71.279, it's a slightly off white. Only the tiniest bit to the red and black will be visible when she is on her base. PieterC
About the radar lantern, just glaze the holes with Krystal Klear and put a drop of matt varnish on it one it is dry. It will be convincingly opaque. I learned this the hard way on my '700 scratchbuilds in which the klear should have remained clear of course -:( Edited October 8 by PieterC
Faraway
I have done the Radar Lantern before reading these helpful hints, re matt varnish. But I added a dot of white paint to my glazing medium and here is the result. I think it works. And compared to the bridge windows, which are also glazed, it certainly is cloudy. Faraway
Radar installed. And then it was gone. The more I look, the more I like the 'frosted perspex' effect. Another dry fit, but I think it's time to stick them down. Jon 9
