Dinky S.H.A.D.O. mobile drunken purchase

Recommended Posts

Soooo... I was on eBay last night after a few glasses of red and stuck in a cheeky offer on a Dinky SHADO mobile.

Forgot all about it until I checked my messages this morning, and now apparently I own it.

So, I'm looking at a restoration that will be more representative of the TV version rather than the toy. I've sourced new tracks, decal and clear parts.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of the light metallic blue paint?

Aah, Dinky, they don't make toys like that anymore, this and the Eagle were my favourite.

Oh, and the SPV, but sadly that's one I never owned, and only saw later in carboot sales for ridiculou$ money.

I couldn't tell you the colour, however, find an image online that you think looks: "right" and use the colour-picker plugin to get the actual hexcode for that colour.

Best I can offer I'm afraid!

I subsequently bought enough paint stripped, paint and decals to do half a dozen of them. Then another wrecked Dinky and two sets of new tracks and clear parts to spread the cost.

I'll see how the first two turn out. If they look OK I may do some more and move them on. There seems to be a market for sympathetically restored ones and those done up in the TV show livery. Some of the "restored" ones don't look too great when you zoom in.

You can get SPVs on eBay for not very much, but finding an intact one that just needs paint and decals could be a bit trickier.

Ford Glacier blue metallic paint is what I used on my Mobile

However, since Halfords stopped having brand specific paints, its hard to get a can of this. I ended up finding one from Hycote when I needed to do some touch ups to this model earlier this year.

Still have my original Dinky Shado Mobile and Interceptor from when I was a kid.  Cherished them when new and still hold a prominent space in the display case.  Curious where you sourced the tracks from; I've scene used mobiles for restoration but concerned about the condition of tracks.  Hey did you outbid me!  🙂

Trying to colour match the green. From my collection of Tamiyas it looks like Field Grey is the closest, but I can see myself going to the model shop armed with a battered Dinky toy and seeing what else is available.

The model is currently marinading in a vat of detergent.

The dark and light green paint came off with paint stripper and a stiff brush, but the orange on the underside of the roof is tougher than the stuff on the bottom of a space shuttle! I'll just prime over it and see how it goes.

Decided not to take the wheels off at this stage, but suspect that I may have to.

A question...

What colour were the screen accurate wheels? Depending where I look they are either blue, green or gun metal.

Quite like the idea of doing gun metal, but I'd also like to know what colour they should be.
