I know that Tesco egg cartons would say "May contain eggs" in the allergy and ingredients details.

It's kind of sad when you have to warn people of things that are so obvious. Like the warning on a frozen pizza package: Do not eat before cooking first.

Do I have to take the frozen pizza out of the plastic wrapper before I put it in the boiling water?

The first night after moving out from my parents', I put a pizza in the oven and forgot to take the foam support on underside off - didn't see it.  It made a bit of a mess

A few years back I had a complete brainy fart when cooking a microwave burger (was stressing about something and left lunch way too late in the afternoon) not only did I fail to take the burger out the packaging I’d left the sauce and cheese in their sealed plastic inside the box I also messed the time up so it was in a minute longer than it needed, absolute carnage of melted plastic and superheated gloop

I know that this may seem ridiculous, but I believe it is very necessary.  I'm always shocked at the lack of allergen knowledge among people who work in the food industry.  We hear about allergen related deaths quite often: the latest was only a few weeks ago.   The food labelling legislation is very strict and very specific - and quite rightly so.  Failure to provide allergen information or comply with the allergen training requirements is actually a criminal offence.  I'm sure that we can all understand why reputable companies tend to err on the side of caution.

It is always worth reading the allergen information panel on food packaging.  One statement that you may read is along the lines of "this product was produced in a factory which handles nuts".  This is totally lawful but in my professional opinion (I work in the food production industry) falls well short of the spirit of the law.  What these companies are stating is that their hygiene procedures are not robust enough to prevent cross-contamination between seperate production runs.    Come on, people...  an allergen washdown isn't exactly rocket science!!!

No, I believe that's optional.

I once put the giblets from a turkey in a pan of water on the stove to boil.... and soon after fell sound asleep. The smell of smoke woke me up! Even though it was late November I opened all the windows. I threw the pan and it's contents away!

When I was a kid I decided to make popcorn on the stove top like mom did. That was the time I learned to ALWAYS put the lid on the pan! It was all over everywhere!

I boiled a couple of eggs dry at my folks' house a while before I moved out, the moving out part being unrelated of course.  I was alerted by the popping sound as the eggs burst and ran downstairs.  There were little bits of hard-boiled eggs on the ceiling for ages after that, which proved conclusively that my parents never look up :D

I must have a look next time I'm there, actually, as I certainly didn't clean the bits off, and they haven't updated the kitchen since then, although they've had a new hob and white goods.

My wife baked a cake for a charity sale last week. Under their new rules she had to list all the details of each ingredient she used in making the cake. Took her longer to do that than bake the cake!

I get it, but surely some common sense should apply. If I suffered from extreme allergies, I certainly wouldn't be buying products from a charity bake sale.  For starters, though we didn't think of it at the time, there are definitely nuts in our kitchen (aside from me and my wife) - and probably have been in the car we used to transport the cake.

I do agree with proper labelling of commercially produced products, but in my example, the labelling could give false reassurance as amateurs are unlikely to be au fait with all the potential risks and necessary precautions.

Cheers

When I was in hospital after my heart attack, I was was asked about allergies, then later given a variety of new medications. I have a peanut allergy, though for some reason, chocolate seems to nullify it. Each new pill came with the usual list of instructions, which I always study. In the middle of the night, I noticed a reaction. Read the notes again, and after the section about pregnancy (where I stopped reading) it said medication came from a factory that used peanuts. In the morning came a very crestfallen doctor, who changed the pills immediately. Note to both parties. Real ALL the instructions.

Their kitchen was upstairs?  That's novel. :fool:

:dull: I knew someone would pick up on that when I re-read it, but I couldn't be bothered to edit it... it was late, and I'd thought about moving into another room recently, so was tired. :D

In 1968, I was stationed in Singapore, and my wife and son were with me. We lived in an army hiring in a place called Sembawang Hills estate. It was Boxing Day and we were packing up for a move to married quarters, and my wife decided that she'd put a Christmas pudding on to heat up. It was one of those ones in a tin and should have had some holes punched in it to let the steam out........but it didn't. We heard this almighty POP, and on examination of the kitchen, discovered Christmas pudding all up the walls and across the ceiling. Oh, what fun we had cleaning that lot up!!

Sounds like a bunch of us took cooking lessons from The Swedish Chef:

For those not familiar with the term, popcorn shrimp refers to shrimp so small you can eat them by the handful, like popcorn.

The music is a tune that was quite popular years ago, called (cleverly enough): Popcorn.

Now you know.

NOPE  it's pretty clear that quite a few peep's on BM have similar -what I call "wayward/out of the box thinking"!

MY favourite annoyance/comedic one is this - - >>

"Question - - why tell me I CAN'T see them"??
