Hi all,

I am a born-again modeller; restarted in Covid (despite working through it).  I have had a forty-odd year break (I think the last model I made was a brush-painted . 1/32 Revell Mosquito in about 1983) but as a computer programmer I like something less abstract as a hobby. physical.  I am a a serial/parallel hobbyist and collector (ok, so not in denial!), but I find modelling quite relaxing at the moment, and the refinement in tools, models and techniques since my first modelling era simply astounds me.  I now have an airbrush, and have dived into acrylic paints, Micro-Sol/Set, washes and weathering.

I have a very slow output (it took me a month to make a paper/photo-etch Sutton harness for a 1/32 Spitfire, and about nine months overall, so I have built up quite a stash!  I just finished an Airfix starter 1/72 Spitfire Mk.1 in two weeks, so it may be getting better.

My main interests seems to be RAF, WW2 and cold war at the moment, although I would like to have a go at some WW1 biplanes whenI feel confident enough!

I discovered britmodeller.com through web searches for information on kits and techniques, and plan to learn more and contribute when I can.

Cheers for now!

Tim

Welcome aboard!

That is pretty similar to my own story. I decided I wanted to start building models again and found this site. Almost 18 months later I'm still enjoying that first build because, well, life is complicated and there have been three or four side projects along the way.

The BM community is a wealth of inspiration, information, hints, tips and all round help and support. Any questions, just ask!

Tim, Welcome to the site. Enjoy your modelling and don't be afraid to ask questions on here if you have a problem.

:welcome: aboard Tim.  I've corrected the typo in your username as requested, so now you can go about your daily modelling without being called iln or ILN, or whatever ;)

Thanks all!  Cheers for the name change Mike.  Tim will do for me, but I go by 'in denial' on hobby forums ... cover the spending trail ...
I have a few questions but I will do a bit more searching to check what's been discussed already.  I may try a post of my 'two week wonder' in a minute to see what people think!

P.S. I have visited Chicago (for work) a couple of times in the '90s; one of my favourite US cities along with SF.
P.P.S  Living where I do, we get escapees from Duxford flying over us; honestly, working from home I hear more Merlins (usually a Mk.IX trainer) than any other aero engine.  Never gets old, though.

Hi Tim, I guess you're near me then as I hear Merlins most days. There's been a Harvard doing aerobatics over for a couple of days last week as well. I've not actually seen it but unmistakable noise.

Welcome to the site! Don't worry about how long it takes you to complete a model. There are a few builds on the forum that have been going on for years!

Welcome  and  enjoy the motley crew here.  I reside west of Cambridge so probably not far from you.

Welcome Tim.

I share a similar interest in aircraft, got into building WW1 stuff and biplanes only recently. The rigging had been putting me off, had a go, found it wasn't too hard, and not looked back!

I'm located on the Lincs/Cambs border near Peterborough. We do have a few shows around this way during the year, mostly within an hour of travelling. Spalding model club have a show on in Holbeach on 22/9. A very friendly and social affair, there is always someone willing to answer modelling questions (sometimes at great lengths 😉)

Well worth visiting the shows for hints and tips (and shopping)

Atb, Steve.

Thanks for the welcome, all!   Maybe there's something about the edge of the fens which makes modelling popular here...  I will try and get out to some shows when I get a moment.  Not that I need to add to the stash, but I would like to try some different brands of paint, and of course look at some people's recent work.   I think there is a club which meets in Sawtry which I might look into visiting.

Hi Tim,

Yes IPMS Brampton. Used to be a member of sorts years ago but the RAF Wyton version before we got booted off the station, then we moved/joined/amalgamated with the guys over at RAF Brampton. Went a couple of times but not sure what happened after that. They run a good show at the Ivo rec every year. In fact, I remember helping out on the first Britmodeller show table there back in 2008.
