rockpopandchips Posted October 2, 2024 Author Posted October 2, 2024 OK so I have ramped up the dark shades, hopefully this is dark enough, the idea now is to highlight the he'll out of this, straight in with bright white, with a little fade away from each candle. I thought about doing this with the airbrush but I'm trying to stick with the brushes and I think I can pin piont each candles light better if I stick with the brushes. 2
rockpopandchips Posted October 2, 2024 Author Posted October 2, 2024 And added a bit more deep shadow before starting to plan out the light. This is not easy with the multiple light sources. 3
Yg Models Posted October 2, 2024 Posted October 2, 2024 (edited) for me, OSL more about radiation on surrounding surface, not the light source. therefore, i would focus on the bone that next to candles and the leg of figure. because you haven't place the legs on base, the effect/result became unclear. e.g. each candle is light source, hence shadow in b/w candles gap will be lighter. but you still keep dark shadow there, so not match with the SOL belong outer candles. i suggest you not necessary to light all candles, just choose 4~5 candles that could create interesting SOL is enough. "David Colwell" shared many SOL bust on flickr, you could take a look. https://www.flickr.com/photos/davidcolwell/ Edited October 2, 2024 by Yg Models 1
rockpopandchips Posted October 2, 2024 Author Posted October 2, 2024 This is a lot harder than it looks.... Without the orange on the candles they didn't look lit, but now they look a bit cartoon like but I can live with that. I think The ideas there abouts but the contrasts need to be greater? 3

I'm stopping here with the base, I tried to brighten the candel top but then the scen looked like scrabble eggs, reds. so then fadded in the orange and reds. The racks at the back I think look the best. I will get the figure primed and see what it looks like together. 4 1
Hunter Rose Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 Just to throw my 2 pennys worth in, I think you need to make the bits that are out of the sphere of light around the candles much darker, and also with fire light, yellow is the brightest colour, orange is your midtone and red is the shadow. So maybe if you do everything where the light is a reddish orange to start and then highlight towards yellow at your bright spots? Also remember that the colour of the light will effect the colour of everything lit by it 1

Hunter Rose Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 Yeah that's looking pretty good! I think once you've got the highlights from the candles on the figure it will really sell the effect 1
Hopsing Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 Very interesting for me, as I'm also trying to work out how to implement OSL in my Lava base. Here is a page that may also help you.https://massivevoodoo.blogspot.com/2009/10/tutorial-overview.html 1
Yg Models Posted October 5, 2024 Posted October 5, 2024 this OSL figure example shall help you. https://www.amiami.com/eng/detail/?gcode=FIGURE-139649 1
rockpopandchips Posted October 5, 2024 Author Posted October 5, 2024 Treated myself to a proper wet pallet, this one is from Dispiae. 5
rockpopandchips Posted October 6, 2024 Author Posted October 6, 2024 OK so there was no way I was going to sort out the skin tones for the one with a brush, so I started out with the air brush. I will go back in now and add in some filters and see about some more dead and sore skin tones, putting down some off white for the cloth so I can see the skin better, if that makes sense.... 7 1
Yg Models Posted October 7, 2024 Posted October 7, 2024 i like this sick infected skin. btw, i use red grass wet pallete, it modified the paper to washable membrane, from my friend experience, it could wash for 6~9times, if the underneath sponge remains clean. you may buy magnifying glass next. 😉 2

Also another coat of off white and then some sort of pale brown contrast pain thinned all over to make it look a bit dirty. 6
Yg Models Posted October 8, 2024 Posted October 8, 2024 for me, i will choose cold tone / dark color for cloth, to max the contract/effect of OSL on it.😗 1

Finished of the head and face, the eye is not perfect but I'm happy with it and once the headdress is on you can only just see it. 6 1
rockpopandchips Posted October 10, 2024 Author Posted October 10, 2024 Just about finished this now I think, might satin topcoat it all them matt the cloth? 4

Thanks and because I need a lesson in high contrast I'm going have practice on my first 3d print, the Dead Pool bust. There was a good bit of apex highlighting done on this, so I brush on some red, then I'm going with a purple for the shadows, nice contrast colour here....😁. Then i did an orange/red mix for some better coverage, i will go back and tidy the shadows now, then after that im stuck. I definitely want it to look comic book style. Do i do cell shade using 3 or 4 shades of each colour or just paint but using really high contrasts from red - white , black - grey and grown- white? 4
Hunter Rose Posted October 10, 2024 Posted October 10, 2024 That is a cool bust! Just a thought but I think you'd be better off painting from dark to light, so start with your shadow colour first. That way it's easier to keep shadows precise and in smaller areas as you build up highlights/colour around them on the raised areas and its easier judge how well each one blends in with the last, so if you want a cell shaded look you can push the contrast a little more between them. 1

You are absolutely right but I've started now..... Calling comic book style. The lower body looks a little ruff but I got more confident by the time I got to the head and face and I'm really happy with how that looks. Slightly change is tactics for the rest and as @Hunter Rosesaid starting with the darker colours and working up. Painting like this realy makes you think about light and dark and hopefully should improve my general figuer painting. 5
