Fixing Large Decal

Recommended Posts

Hi.  I have applied a number of water-based decals to a Revell model.  Two of the decals are quite large, around six inches long.  The method I used was Vallejo Model Air base, apply water-based decal, apply Humbrol Decalfix (to aid positioning, etc.).  This method has proved fine, except for the two long decals, which went from nice-and-smooth to very-wrinkled as they dried out.  Any advice on how to fix?
My first thought was that this happened due to the Vallejo Model Air not being clear coated first, yet odd that it hasn't happened to all the decals, just the two largest.
Thanks!

Fixing this will be difficult. I would remove the decals, obtain new ones, and delete / replace the Humbrol Decalfix in your process. The latter apparently softened the decal film, made it expand while it already adhered quite well, hence the wrinkles.

Hi, Graham.

There's a small possibility that some strong decal-setting solution might solve this issue (I've never read of anyone using this stuff AFTER the decal is in place and dried, admittedly). I think you could argue that, if this remedy doesn't actually work, you are effectively back to "square-one".

Hope this helps.

Micro Sol and Set will work on dried decals. Apply liberally and when they start their work press the decal down gently with a dampened tissue/paper kitchen roll
