dad's lad Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 I've been buying kits for donkey's years and have acquired a number of Tornados from the following: Airfix, Italeri, ESCI, Monogram, Hasegawa, Revell (all IDS/ECM/GR.1) plus Airfix and Revell F.3's. My intention is to build them all for comparison purposes, not commentating on accuracy, but I have noticed that the earlier kits from Airfix, Italeri and ESCI all have dual control cockpits. As I intend to build all OOTB, us there any way to identify by serial number, which RAF aircraft were twin stickers? I understand that a total of 17 were built for all 3 participating nations.
Lord Riot Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 The UK Serials website may help. In the first column those listed as BT… are ‘British Twin’, with BS being ‘British Single’. http://www.ukserials.com/results.php?serial=ZA Similar for the F.3; build numbers starting AT (Air defence Twin). http://www.ukserials.com/results.php?serial=ZE 2 1

Richard E Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 As a cross reference to the list from @Lord Riot the Tornado Data website includes a list compiled by Chris Corkish: the trainer versions of the RAF Tornado are shown on Chris' list as GR1T/GR4T and F3T.

That's fantastic thanks.
Pete in Lincs Posted August 24, 2024 Posted August 24, 2024 And if you're looking at photographs and you're not sure, check the nose leg. Twin stickers had a torque link front and rear. 3 1

Twin stickers had a torque link front and rear. Never hear that one before, when i worked on them i was told if the leg had a rear torque link or not was down to the Mod state of the leg. Just had a look at pictures of Pinky when it was at RIAT and cant see a torque link on the back and that was a a trainer version
Pete in Lincs Posted August 29, 2024 Posted August 29, 2024 Interesting. All the trainers at Cottesmore had two. As far as I remember. Mind you, another thing I remember, the nose wheel steering motor was the same as a Phantoms. Just a different drive cog. As the guys found out when they tried fitting it . Somehow it got through the system and had the wrong section and ref.
