keefr22 Posted September 14 Posted September 14 That looks really good Matt, the old Merit kit is scrubbing up very well. As the others have said the driver is looking great, really like the expression on Tony's face - looks like he's enjoying the drive! Keith 1
Vesa Jussila Posted September 14 Posted September 14 I agree, looks good. I think shade of British racing green perfect. 1
cmatthewbacon Posted September 17 Author Posted September 17 The exhaust on the '58 car is different from the earlier models. The kit part has a fan of four pipes coming out from the cowl and merging into a single straight pipe. Roy Cross's picture has three pipes. But what actually happens is that four serpentine exhaust headers merge into two under the hood, and the second pipe joins the first out in the open, then they go into a thicker chromed and insulated single exhaust running alongside the driver. Like this: This is all plastic rod and tube, with SMS Hyperchrome for the brightwork section. I've also glued the cockpit screen in place. Dipped in Mr Gauzy Agent Glass Coat, the kit part actually came up pretty well. Cleaning up the seam and painting the rear section has also been completed. Tomorrow, the wheels go on permanently (I wish I had a large marble cakestand....) best, M. 8
Bengalensis Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Things are really falling into place now. Nice job on the exhaust. 8 hours ago, cmatthewbacon said: (I wish I had a large marble cakestand....) An investment you will not regret 😎 1 1
Neddy Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Jollity aside, a cake decorating turntable is an excellent and much cheaper alternative. They start at sick squid in Sainsbury's - Google for details. I've used one ever since I returned to the hobby, it's invaluable. (Not as posh as a marble one, though...) 😁 1 1
cmatthewbacon Posted September 18 Author Posted September 18 Right, that's the build of this one finished. Time for a bit of a clean and final polish here and there, and off for beauty shots for RFI at the weekend... 11
stevehnz Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Lovely job on this Matthew, I can see a 1/43 one of these coming my way soon, watching this has given me a "need" Steve. 1 1
bentwaters81tfw Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Nice job on the old Merit kit. I picked one up at Telford a few years back. They do scrub up well. Mine came minus the seat, but a bit of fettling to the cut down cap of a deodorant stick, and some thin cloth, and you would never know. I like the wheels - I stuck with the originals, and the spoke decals held up well, though the numbers didn't. Proper British racing cars from back in the day. 1
nick Posted September 19 Posted September 19 That looks great, I do love racing cars from that era. I’m intrigued now by mixed by wheels, never seen that before! 1

It ran with the cast magnesium wheels front and back, but Stirling Moss in particular didn’t like the impact the stiffer, less compliant disc wheels had on handling and steering feel, so the fronts were swapped back to the original wires. best, M. 2
Bengalensis Posted September 19 Posted September 19 Lovely build! Looking forward to the RFI photos! 1
Vesa Jussila Posted September 19 Posted September 19 Looks really good. I am waiting final pictures. 1
klubman01 Posted September 19 Posted September 19 The finished model looks great. Nice work. Trevor 1
Redstaff Posted September 20 Posted September 20 Great job of such an old kit I really love the shape of these older cars, pity that there aren't many manufacturers that support this era in 1/24 or 1/20 scale Ian 1
