'These will do'....?? They look brilliant (sorry, no pun intended! :) )

I like the mirrors as in the last pic.!

might need to do the Revolution 4 spokes...

It's when you say things like that I almost consider trying to learn fusion or something (only almost though!)

It really is a great asset to be able to design and print bits exactly as you need them rather than making do with what is available commercially.

Exquisite attention to detail as ever, looking forward to see what else you're going to do to her - Andy

Thanks a lot Andy!

For the moment I still seem stuck on the wheels, but hopefully things can move on.

The last mirror placement is probably the most effective. I'm leaning towards it, even though I usually like my mirrors placed on the doors. The there is the question of the mirrors themselves...

It's fantastic to be able to (almost) do the parts you really want, but oh so easy to get stuck... as we will see soon...

This morning I was still not perfectly happy with the look of the tyres. So I went out to my 1/1 work shop and cut myself a well fitting paper template of the complete profile of the real rear tyre. There was a sense of some improvements to be made. Zooming the profile sketch in the cad program to 1/1 size on the screen and holding the paper template against it confirmed. The overall size and measurements were indeed correct, but the side wall needed to bulge even more and the radius over to the tread way needed to be softer. Same thing for the front tyres. So the models were modified and the printer is working once again. The difference won’t be huge in real life, but hopefully enough. Or perhaps it is one of those things that must be exaggerated on a small scale model.

Wonderful attention to detail!

For me the long wing mirror stalks look out of place, but I am sure it will all look fantastic when complete!

Malc.

Thanks a lot Malc!

I'm happy to report that those mirrors on the long stalks are a dead issue, they were originally made for some RX7 I don't really know. I have now taken the basic mirror and given it a more normal foot and put that that on a lower plate bracket with holes in it. Will be printed tonight.

A wiper has been created from a Tamiya A110 piece that was cut apart, shortened and turned around. It’s always a hassle to find suitable wipers. One day I will draw a good selection of typical wiper arms and blades that can be tweaked to be printed. This was not that day though… Later I also added a washer nozzle. Two very oversized 1/43 photo etch towing eyes will be good for this one I think.

The cut outs are done where the 4-point harness will attach to the top tube of the frame.

This is the mirror with bracket that will be tried next.

Some nice work there.  The revised mirror brackets look to be more in keeping with vibe of the car.

Yes they are, testing is promising, but still not sure. It's much easier to build a specific car after reference photos... 😎

Early morning testing. New tyres. This time it’s getting somewhere. Not sure if it really comes through in the pictures, but IRL it’s quite a different impression.

Here it’s more evident.

Testing the new mirrors on plate brackets. These are much better, but still not sure, neither on where to place them.

Hi Jörgen :)

To allow the pilot to see something on the road behind him, the second location you tried, further forward, is more logical and realistic.

Wow! As an ex race/rally marshall now in my mid-seventies I remember theses racing in the day, in fact some of them were at Silverstone this weekend for the Classic Car race meeting!

Awesome headlights: they really make a car. On that subject does anyone know a source of headlights for 1/43 cars? I'm just about out of Scala 43 lenses and they seem to be OOP now.

(apologies for the hijack)

That's what I was about to say Thierry, although you actually said it better than I would have! :)

The tyres are, again simply to my eyes, now looking much better Jörgen, they now visually appear to give the clearance in the arches I see in pics of the real things - but again that's just totally subjective!

And have I actually said how good those wheels look.....?! 🤣

Keith

PS, could I ask, is your Europa race prepared? I was looking at my my stalled Tamiya kit over the weekend which I started to 'prepare' for historic racing, but couldn't work out a realistic design for the rear roll cage. I'd like to get back to it when the current projects are finished.... (one day!)

Yes, that would allow minimal head movement and from the functional point of view should probably be the choice. On current cars they seem to be fitted at any of the positions, probably much personal preference of different drivers involved.

That's nice, both you and the car have had long careers 👍

Too bad if Scala 43 lights are no longer available, I've always liked those, still have a few. Sadly I know nothing equal and current, but would also like to find.

Yes, the mirrors at the forward position makes sense from that point of view.

I was surprised this morning how much difference the small adjustments of the tyres would make, but most happy with the result.

I hope the wheels will look as good also after paint. Small time retirement production perhaps 😎

My Europa is on the road, just, but pretty much race prepared, except for a lack of the cage. It's not easy to get a good and current cage in inside that cockpit. Some I see place the main hoop behind the rear window, outside. Not for me though. I have been thinking about something like this, if I would ever get round to it:

As the wheelbase now has become closer to correct the moulded in rear brake drums had to come off.

G4_59.jpg

After making sure that the wheels can later be mounted at their correct position I decided to keep the rear brakes and modified them to fit inside the new wheels.

G4_60.jpg

Some material has been added to prevent the dreaded “see through” effect. A piece of photo etched radiator core pattern has been cut to size.

G4_61.jpg

T-handles for the kill switch and extinguisher placed. I also think that these mirrors and their position can be what will survive until the end of the build.

Another good little update Jörgen, coming along well as usual :)

Thank you for the link to the Custom Cages Europa rollcage, I'll see if I can get something similar to fit in the Tamiya kit (that's as long as I haven't thrown all my models in a skip first, nothing is going right at the moment....)

Now just sit back and breathe easy and all will become alright again 😎

I suspect it will be difficult to fit that full cage into the model with real dimensions on all tubes. Maybe with half round rods where it wont be visible, and perhaps slightly thinner dimensions. Also a lot will depend om what seats you will choose.

Got stuck with work related stuff right from the morning and much of the day, but with the most urgent things out of the way I found myself playing with an older model of a Revolution wheel I got from Brusefält, that I started rebuilding. I had planned to cut the vac formed windows to to fit, but a few hours later I had these two done instead. Printer working again.

No, I won’t be changing the wheels, but I suppose these Revolutions could work fine as well.

But they will definitely work on something like this 😎
