This my HMS Repulse in 1/350 scale - with the following aftermarket additions -, The Flyhawk Super mdetails and photo-etch set was £ 58.80 , Alliance Battleship Bollards £ 9.15, Wood deck £ 20 , BECC Fabric White Ensign Flag £ 8 , Repulse Master Barrel set £ 14 , and then the Admiralty Modelworks Repluse set ( from USA ) was another 75 US Dollars ( including shipping ) - probably about £ 150 in Total --

plus the £ 98 for the purchase of the Model back in 2017

This has the well engineered FlyHawk models photo etch set

The Admiralty Modelworks update set that corrects the aft superstructure and also happens to provide some nice resin replacement boats

Corrected main turrets from Shapeways ( from 2017 )

Master main gun barrels ( added to aftermarket  Turrets ) with 4 inch AA gun barrels added to the Triple Mounts

Infini 20mm Oerlikons

Tetra 0.5 Quad guns

BigBlueBoy 2pdr pom poms

Alliance Modelworks deck vents

Artwox wooden decking and anchor chains

I added an engineer made footpad metal support underneath the Trumpeter Plastic Dry dock style display stand ( unique to my certain knowledge )

53924501882_7374a497d7_k.jpg24837637_1637504966288825_7698115854611108879_o (1) by hmswalker, on Flickr

and what the Display Stand looked like before assembly to Model ( I found the Silver Display - things - on Ebay )

I got an Engineer in Scotland to make me the 2 Steel Feet for taking the weight of the model off the plastic stand - neat ??

one photo shows the missing propellor shaft support struts , and the plastic card replacements added in their place to replicate the missing detail

what Flyhawk provide in quality upgrade in just one photo !!

I have meant to show this from ?? Last Year ?? - due to requests - hope the model is acceptable quality ??

Its as accurate as possible - its got an aircraft air warning radar on the spotting top - at the rear -

She had a type 284 surface gunnery set installed in Rosyth mid July 41, whilst a type 286P air warning set was installed on the passage to Freetown, August 41

that is the X shaped part at the back of the Spotting Top ( an educated guess where it was placed )

the sharp eyes on here , will spot the fighting platform on the rear Tripod mast where the 2 x 0.5 inch AA guns were actually placed ( Trumpeter doesn't seem to know this )

I had to scratch build this part

will post a better photo -

here you go - see if you can spot it

the photo-etch added to the Kit Walrus

and the preparatory work

note - I had the Flyhawk instructions scanned - and tripled in size for ease of reading - and assembly - never more happy than when I did this - bliss - no eye strain

I also have to own up , I bought a Pontos 1/350 Prince of Wales super upgrade set - and took for this Model - the Pontos brass deck vents ( super quality compared to the kit plastic ) and kept for this model , the Pontos fore and aft Ensign / Jack Staffs !

I re-sold the Pontos upgrade set off on Ebay ( when divorcing in 2018 ) - so I pay my pennance here .

Wow, that's outstanding work! :worthy:

As I'm now working out how I'll rig a model, I'm particularly in awe of your very extensive rigging.

Oooh - that is a Beauty.  Hugely impressive painting finish and rigging, and I love the base and case

Absolute Show winner I'd say :clap2:

Thank you Gentlemen

far too kind - its average !

actually embarassing - how the extra after market stuff adds to the Model - my old made in 1991 HMS Prince of Wales by Tamiya looks positively staid !

for the record , I used the Infini ( from South Korea ) Rigging Thread

Infini Model has produced a thread the sole purpose of which is to use for rigging on our ship models. It comes in four different thicknesses (or Denier, as the packages are labeled.) and includes a guide for which scale to use which product.

All in all I would highly recommend this product to anyone and everyone who wants to rig their ships.

This thread will save you the trouble of trying to stretch sprue to a regular length and consistency, and because it is slightly elastic will not break if it gets bumped on the completed model. At 145 feet on each roll you will have enough thread to rig possibly hundreds of kits (Depending on which scale you build).

The sizes I have are: ‘Fine-for 1/350’  I can tell you right now that their labels of ‘fine’ and ‘super fine’ are no understatement. These are as fine, or finer, than human hair.

Being made of Lycra the rigging thread is also slightly elastic and, as the insert says, can be stretched to 7 times its size.

Care must be taken because of this elastic property as if you pull on it too much it will spring back and deform.

I had the Metal Feet and metal screws / washers made by Callum at https://anderson-wilson-engineering.co.uk/ in Galashiels

they work a treat as the weight is spread onto the two metal foot bases and the kit plastic is really light around the display case on the felt base ( it doesn't dig in )

That is indeed a beauty! Tricky paint-scheme to pull off convincingly, and I'm loving the Walrus. Inspiring stuff.:clap:

Errr, no it AIN'T! 🙂 This is a superb model of the ship. The detail you've got into this model makes her a masterpiece. I think she's extremely well done.

I think many of us think that about our earlier models, I certainly do. But I guess that's the 'price' we pay for improving as we go. 🙂

This is stunning! Fantastic work, and as others have said, way beyond average! All the additions added have really made it come together. The problem is that now you’ve set this bar, all your future builds are going to have the same hefty price tag!!! 😉

That is a great rendition of this very fine looking ship can I ask where you got the ships crest from it adds that extra level to the whole look of the display.  :worthy:

Hi Beefy.

The Ships crest came from the

' Admiralty modelworks '  Resin after market correction set for Repulse. The major part that it gave to this model was the Royal Party aft accommodation that was designed for the 1939 Trip to Canada ( and never used ) .

Trumpeter uses the 1936 reference plans for the after accommodation outhouses that has both outhouses the same shape,  where as they were shaped different.

The resin set was out of production. Luckily I got the last one that was lying around when I contacted the company.

The set had great ships boats. .

This photo shows the plastic card extension required to fit the 2 sets of 0.5 inch Quadruple Machine Guns to the main mast

and highlighted with red arrow so its more obvious , what I am talking about

I also realise now - that I - didn't use the resin Admiralty Modelworks - for the aft shelter deck extensions - just as a guide to check that the Flyhawk etch sets were correct

see here

- here they are - so its much more clear

from memory , I moved one of the Vents ( aft - or rear of the 2 pounder ( 40mm ) pom-pom quadruple set further back - to what trumpeter had them sitting

as otherwise the aft quad pom-pom set is hard up agains the vents , and won't fit -

I also lowered the aft stern hawse pipe ( corrected position ) as its in the wrong moulded position

and

the 20mm Oerlikon AA single mountings ( 8 used )

2 sets on X Turret ( rear ) , 4 sets on aft superstructure ( 2 on each side ) and the last 2 sets alongside on the forward Conning Tower position - on side sponsons .

( as shown on Raven and Roberts - British Battleships ( 1976 , Arms and Armour Press )

Well, that's a fine-looking model. Very well done, congrats!! You don't have to feel uneasy about compliments, they are well deserved. BW how long did the build last? I broke my back with Yamashiro and it took me eight months!!!

Once again, congrats, and... what's next?

Hi ,

Thanks for kind words.

I have the Merit HMS Ark Royal + loads of aftermarket

In 1/350 scale,  with the Veryfire aftermarket super details set.

When I get time to build is another thing altogether.!

That's such a good model and subject, even the way you've presented her looks brilliant. The little details from the after market stuff just adds to the perfection. Then there's the painting and weathering which is again bang on, thanks for sharing.

I have in mind next , the Tamiya Prince of Wales , but get a better nameplate made , than Tamiya presents ( they have no H.M.S on the nameplate  )

This is what I was made on Shapeways -

Great build of a great ship, which is significant in my family as my dads cousin was on board when she sank, sadly he did not make it out as he worked in the boiler room

Thank you both.

I was lucky.that I followed a build on the Trumpeter kit where he highlighted the inaccurate parts and missing detail , and extra super detail and incorporated it in the model.

Tamiya Kit finally arrived , and I have now the vital Camouflage Pattern paint guide in A3 ( thanks Sovereign Hobbies )
