ModelingEdmontonian
Progress on my Paraguayan T-6 has slowed somewhat, so I'm going to start on another Sexy American Single in South American service, this time a P-35: I have not been able to find any photos of what these a/c (something like 2-5, perhaps modified racing machines) looked like, but I found this online and feel it's likely a good approximation. The Hobby Craft 1/48 P-35 includes decals for this, but for mine in 1/72 I'll piece them together from spares. I have these sheets to draw from. It's a rough kit, so we'll see how I manage it... I prepared the wheels, IP, prop, and engine to spray rattle can black on. And here they are with the black sprayed. By the way, these are the kit's decals, most of which I shouldn't need, although likely will use a few (e.g., the Hamilton Standard prop logos). There is a PE fret, too:
ModelingEdmontonian
The kit is intimidating to work with, at least it is to me, but the engine seemed straightforward enough (if unimpressive), so I got it assembled and painted.
ModelingEdmontonian
Onward with the cockpit! There is much styrene, a couple of decals, and a bit of PE to work with, and mostly it is not straightforward, but I think I'm figuring her out, more or less.
ModelingEdmontonian
More progress on the cockpit . . . actually enjoying this one.
ModelingEdmontonian
Ok, cockpit completed, I have the fuselage together. This proved challenging with this short run kit, but I think I have it mostly where I want it. Now the wing fit is going to be even more difficult, so I'm stalled figuring that out now. Also have some work underway on the prop and wheels.
opus999
Ooo... This will be fun! P-35's and P-43's fascinate me as "almost ran"s (although they did "run" for some countries as we see here). I think it will look pretty neat in Ecuadorian markings. Timely too... I got a SH P-35 just about a week ago.

The Swedes actually really used these as a significant part of their airforce! 36 minutes ago, opus999 said: P-43's P-43s are even more obscure, I feel! ModelingEdmontonian
I've wrestled the wings on as well as stabilizers and a few other parts. In places the design is really smart and fit exceptionally good, but somehow the upper wings seem to be too long by several millimetres. Anyway, I'm enjoying the challenge and she's progressing nicely now.

It has decals for a series of experimental and war games camouflage used by the US. One of the experimental camo schemes looked pretty nice. I've seen the Swedish P-35 and that would be a lot of fun too. On 8/19/2024 at 6:44 PM, ModelingEdmontonian said: P-43s are even more obscure, I feel! I think you're right. I ordered a Dora Wings P-43 about the same time as the P-35, but it hasn't arrived. I like the fact that it's the grandpappy of the P-47. The only SH kit I've done was my Boomerang and It took a little effort to get the cockpit in, but nothing too terrible. Everything else fit really well. There was a little slop to clean up around the wing seams, but it only took 5 minutes. In general, I was pretty happy with it. Hope yours is going as well. 1

I forgot to take a photo of the resin that comes with this kit, but there a few resin pieces: wing machine guns, the propeller hub, and most interesting to me, the forward UC doors. I got the doors and legs on as well as most of the remaining parts... I think she's ready for priming. The wheels and prop are still getting painted, and I will prime a few of the other pieces too that I have opted to not affix to the a/c yet. Although the kit is challenging, I am enjoying it and the P-35 is a very interesting plane!
John Masters
Looks good. I have always wanted t build this kit. You are doing great!
ModelingEdmontonian
here's the underside, by the way, which allows you to see those resin UC doors better.

Yeah, I'll probably start a thread when I make it. I just don't know when that's going to be. I've hit kind of a slump in the past couple months and have only recently gotten back to the forum. You seem to be making short work of this kit. It looks good so far!

I only meant a modeling slump, not a whole-life slump! Just a combination of other responsibilities and other fun stuff and a bit of lack of motivation, that's all. I just realized that my statement could've been taken many ways.

ModelingEdmontonian
I prepared the a/c and many of the other parts for priming two days ago. And then I sprayed Tamiya primer on her and the Peruvian P-36 I'm also building. One of the odd things about the P-35 is some sort of leather "landing" point for the UC leg when wheels are up. I painted these a red brown:
ModelingEdmontonian
Forgot to say that unfortunately I lost one of the PE rear wheel doors... I thought she might turn up, but no luck after several days. So, I think I'll be moving forward sans rear wheel doors. They're fairly itty bitty and I don't think their absence will bother me too much. Edited August 27 by ModelingEdmontonian

Probably could, but this sounds like your type of modeling, not mine 😉 I've used my Tamiya AS-12 rattle can to spray the a/c. I've also painted up the drilled-out exhaust piping... sorry this is a terrible photo. And the wheels are all ready, too.

I have a few plastic snap-lid boxes from Dollarama with little compartments.... they have them in the craft section. I keep all my bits in them as I am sure I will lose the bits otherwise.

Yeah, I use these types of receptacles, mostly they work well... the issue is when you go to actually stick the little pieces on they can find a way to escape. Especially the pesky PE...
