APA Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Good afternoon Next up is this nice Scammell Pioneer R100. I've already done the transporter which I thought was a very good kit so most of this should be familier except it was a couple of years ago so...... (I did start a valantine but quickly went off it. I have got a building system of tracks / wheels / tracks / wheels etc but I'm going off doing tanks and really just want to do the support stuff, lorries etc. I might do a couple of Churchills though 😉) Anyway I've started but not quite in sequence. I'm doing it in chunks and then sticking it all together which seems more logical than the instructions. Nice of them to include a nicer radiator than the original kit. I seem to remember they cocked up the kit version. Thunder Models do like their injection gates and they do put them in the most inconvenient places. They are everywhere but it's a small matter to sort. On to the actual doings I just slapped the engine together with little clean up and no PE as it's going to be hidden. Sub assemblies done today and dry fitted Filler on the radiator cap. I do remember you have to be carefull with the fit of this as it sticks up and needs to align with the bonnet which is relative to the cab etc etc. Cheers all Andrew 18
evilbobthebob Posted August 4 Posted August 4 Ah a fellow R100 builder. Since you've already done the transporter, I don't think there's much to mention about this one except that the rear compartment fit can be challenging, especially around the winch.
Stef N. Posted August 4 Posted August 4 I will happily follow along with this. I have a Scammel in the stash so I will see if I can get any tips from yourself. All the best. 👍👍
Hamden Posted August 5 Posted August 5 I'll follow along with this one, looking forward to seeing it come together with your usual attention to detail Roger
Bullbasket Posted August 5 Posted August 5 Same here. I've got the very same kit, so I'll be following this build closely. Best of luck with it. John.
Keeff Posted August 6 Posted August 6 Interesting vehicle .... I'll join the crowd and follow along just because I can! The work so far looks good .... nice crisp details too! Keith 😁

Hi Bob yes remember your build 😁👍 thanks for the tips. I'll be replacing the kit 'canvas' so should be OK. Thunder don't do a good job of canvas and wood effect. 😊 On 8/4/2024 at 11:06 PM, Stef N. said: I will happily follow along with this. APA Posted August 18 Author Posted August 18 A good couple of days at the bench has seen the chassis complete. I swear these kits are 80% chassis! So no major dramas, one under formed piece and a bit of scratch building. Built up the cable spindle / bobbin thingy and added a layer of 'rope' and changed the kit springs with scratch ones Also went a bit mad and changed all the kit springs! Just noticed I haven't cleaned up the sprue marks on the suspension bracket thingies!! All put together with all the main suspension bits being dry fitted for now The instructions have a very handy cable and pipe diagram taken from the original Scammell manual which I may use to add a bit more detailing which of course no one will ever see. Sitting nice and square for now even though its mostly dry fitted. Won't hurt to keep it straight. I'm waiting for the wheels from LZ Models as the kit ones are famously terrible Quick start on the cab. Along with the wheels and 'wendy house' canvas Thunder Models have an annoying habit of doing very unrealistic wood effects everywhere. I've scraped the left hand side off to compare but you can't really see the difference in the pic. Cheers all Andrew 18
Keeff Posted August 18 Posted August 18 Nice work ..... that chassis is a piece of heavy duty engineering! The more I see of this, the more detail is revealed..... 👌 Keith 😁 2
Hamden Posted August 19 Posted August 19 Nice work on the chassis, there's plenty going on there Roger 1
FrancisGL Posted August 19 Posted August 19 Hi APA, This work looks superb, I love the amount of pieces and detail in the model, I hope they are visible in the end. Cheers Francis 👍

APA Posted August 26 Author Posted August 26 Another good day at the bench and the wheels arrived from LZ 😁👍🏻 Got everything fixed to the chassis that I can. Theres only a couple of bits which interact with the top section left off. Slightly dangerous game adding everything out of sequence as there are a few bits that stick into the cab, steering column etc but I've lined them up pretty square so that could possibly go wrong! 😵💫 Wheels aren't the sharpest of prints but close enough for 1/35 I suppose and a vast improvement on the kit Added a cable and eyelet which I've wrapped in 'cloth' as seen in a pic somewhere. This is pretty poor so..... Unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be able to save any of this. I want the rear folded down so I think it's out with the styrene sheet and 0.5mm hole punch 😎 Something like this (He could have stood a bit more to the left!!) Top sections started with all the awful wood grain removed. I'll also add some springs to the air filter 😊 Hopefully get a few good days in next weekend as well to speed things along 🤞🏻 Cheers all Andrew 16
Stef N. Posted August 26 Posted August 26 I see why you want to change that back end. It's not that good compared to the rest of it. The rest is coming along excellently.👍👍
evilbobthebob Posted August 26 Posted August 26 Warning: you will do a lot of swearing and maybe some cutting trying to fit the cab over the winch lever + shaft + steering column. I tried to do a similar thing! I didn't find much issue with the kit wheels, they just took a lot of cleanup.

Yes I have previous on these kits but I'm feeling lucky 😉🍀👍👌🥸🤞 As for the wheels the rear ones bare no resemblance to any actual tyre treads. Replacements may be a little softer but overall I think they are better. I might actually use the kit front ones as they rarely used the heavy treads on the front. Minus a few flaws I think these are great kits and doing all 3 versions makes a nice little collection. Look forward to yours 😊👍 Andrew 2 1
FrancisGL Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Hi Andrew, The look is superb even without paint, so many details to paint. I was tempted to get one of these or something similar, but the price made me think twice. Cheers Francis.👍
Keeff Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Wowsers! That chassis has some serious detail and looks great. Intrigued to see it with paint on now .... Keith 😁 1

APA Posted September 3 Author Posted September 3 Time is a bit precious at the mo. 1:1 scale is calling! But did a few hours earlier in the week and started on the cab and rear. Did a bit of sagging on the seats and covered them with fag paper. Sigh............... I'm doing this all out of sequence now. Stuck the cab rear to the rear. It sits on the chassis. Did a bit of sctaching and added some cables and pipes. Will do a bit more research and see what else I can add. Windsecreen wiper motor for starters 😁 Also added separate tie down poles for the battery boxes Everything dry fitted to see how its going. Decided to use the kit front wheels as while they aren't accurate they do look more in keeping with the usual type seen. Cheers all, back in a bit 👋 Andrew 12
Keeff Posted September 3 Posted September 3 Very nice ..... it's beginning to look like the beast it is! Keith ☺️ 1
Peter2 Posted September 3 Posted September 3 In the wartime photo of the captured Scammell, the front wheel looks like the deep-grooved rear tyres (photo seems slightly out of focus, so it's not definite). Does that mean the LZ replacement wheels also could be used in the front, if desired, instead of the inaccurate kit tyres? Just wondering.
