If you have a very thick Frog canopy you have the essential part of the forming device you need without organising a vacuum device, put the canopy moulding on a stick held in a vise and get a piece of  thin acetate hot and soggy over a heat source and draw it quickly down to copy the mould in rapidly cooling acetate.

The first (and to date only) time I tried plunge moulding/forming, my hand slipped and I plunged formed my thumb. Needless to say, the "hot and soggy" acetate did wonders for my skin...

Ha! You guys crack me up.     :)

Sanding, and a light coat of primer, are finished. Shaping the card stock to the airfoil of the wing was accomplished with sanding sicks that were wider than the strips of card stock. I left the ailerons off as I think I will pose these to add that irresistible touch of "it didn't fit so I didn't try." By the way, I assume these are ailerons, correct?

IMG_7186

I think it will work. I added some filler to the seams between the card stock and the kit, but after final sanding there was very little of the putty remaining. I'm working on the intake splitter now - what Frog moulded bears little resemblance to the real thing. I'll post a picture soon. I mentioned previously that I was adding detail to the cockpit - sidewalls actually. It all came off once I realised that the photos in the book did not have the intake ducts installed yet. Jeesh Bill, read the captions!

Anyway, I'm also faking making an instrument panel.

Cheers,

Bill

Department 47 - Are you insane?

I sacrificed some old AIM-54 launch rails and added the flow control vanes to the "intakes."

IMG_7187

The question, of course, is why? You may have also noticed that I reshaped the front of the intake divider to better match what's in the aircraft. The vanes, by the way, are quite visible in the real thing. In the model? Not so much. You see, I was facing a dilemma (from the Greek, meaning double premise or proposition). The heavenly messenger on my shoulder was saying "You know, if you fancy yourself a real modeller, you'd scratch build the intake trunks" whilst the satan (a title, not a name) on the other shoulder was exhorting "Sod it - why not empty that bottle of single malt instead?" I chose the middle ground, made these silly vanes, and had a beer.     :drink:

Cheers,

Bill

PS. I might have the good and bad guys mixed up...     :drunk:

Looking very much improved as well as improvised

Bill - expecting your usual miracles with this kit.

For some background reading I've just put up a copy for you of Flight International here containing their original article on the E.28/39:

For some period flavour I also included a copy in the same folder of their later 20th anniversary article from 1971 in which one of Gloster's test pilots  - John Grierson - describes flying her.

(The link should work for all BMers interested...)

Thanks @TheBaron!

One of my favourite parts in these old magazines are the adverts. Now I know where to get a "Flare, Swirler, and Atomiser."

A couple of quick updates:

I mounted the cockpit, complete with my "radiator" vanes, and beneath it I added a small bulkhead that prevents a look-through fuselage (the latter issue due only to my reluctance to scratch-build the intake tunnels, taking the easy way out instead as it was the quickest path to a beer.) Next, I added a bunch of .177 caliber BBs for weight upfront and prevent a tail sitter. I also added some card stock to fill in the slot for the stand, which wasn't in the box anyway.

IMG_7190

Next was a quick assembly of the major fuselage  bits.

IMG_7191

I'll do some seam clean-up now, and also fill in quite a few sink holes. I think the tail bumper needs to be reshaped too. My plan is to represent the aircraft in a condition that it most likely was rarely seen on the ground - ailerons posed, elevators down, and rudder slightly off neutral. Since the plane is so, well, plain, I think this will give it a bit more interest. I wonder - anyone have photos of the nose wheel turned? I have a bad track record of guessing which components rotate with the wheel.

The sharp-eyed, and probably the nearly blind as well, have noticed that I'm still sanding and shaping the wing extensions. Sooner or later I'll get it to where I like it. Ta for now.

Cheers,

Bill

I'm sure you've already considered the enormous excitement created by you producing an engine reveal, you know,  should you be worried in any way about rushing the build...

Exactly what I was thinking about !!

Seeing what has already been done... Showing the engine could be interesting.....

Impressive work as usual Bill

Is there still any room for a CC ??

Congratulations Sir !!

Sincerely.

You can do the engine reveal right out of the Clear Prop! box - in actual 1:72 scale to boot. Someday...

Doesnt it look nice Bill.

I appreciate how much fun its already been to get here but just as so many of those early Frog models it does have a definite 'look' about it.

You are doing it proud Bill take a congratulatory bow, already.

Noodling about the best way to make this mod:

IMG_7194

I cut the fairing out of a printed (to scale) drawing. Obviously, Frog didn't incorporate this into their model. I suspect it will end up as a card stock extension, filled in and smoothed with my lovely red putty. The appearance of this fairing in the video frame posted by @TheBaron above is intriguing. I'm not exactly sure how to interpret it.

You knew I couldn't build it out of the box.    :)

Cheers,

Bill

PS. Man, the model looks nasty in these photos. I promise to make it more presentable.

Enjoying the build immensely Bill.  It does seem though that you have about as much chance of doing a basic build of anything as I have. Nothing wrong in that but be careful, lest Mike decides to turn you into a Martian as well.

I like rear views.     :)

Oh,  you mean the airplane. Thanks for those links, even though it makes this mod a bit more intriguing than I originally anticipated. Should be fun - what could possibly go wrong?

Should he wish to turn me into an actual Martian, I wouldn't be able to finish the build. I'd be a red sedimentary rock with tantalising evidence of flowing water and biomarkers for the occasional microbe.

Bill

Bill, you ain't old, at least as compared to some of us fossils. Though I did hear tell that you first served as a cabin boy on Noah's Ark. But then that's probably  just some loose tongue tale talk by others.

Somebody stole the gold tokens. Bummer.

Probably someone has commented this in the meantime, but in case nobody did and lest I forget: The Gold Tokens were a Frog marketing lie, as they are not really gold(en) but merely some coins printed on the instructions. Guess how long it took me to realise this.

I think someone garbled that one. I was in charge of cleaning up after the animals on the boat built by Utnapishtim in the Sumerian city of Shuruppak on the Euphrates. You may recall that Utnapishtim was told by great god Enki to build the boat and save the "living things" from the flood he planned. So we did - Noah just usurped the story. Bad Noah.

We had to take extra cattle and swine because, as Nick Lowe smartly observed "the beasts on each other do like to dine."     :)

As there were no gold(en) tokens in any Gold Token boxing I could find, I was spared that fate. After I found out, I wouldn't have wanted to embarass myself paying with a/such a strip of paper.

What I also have always wondered: a) What exactly were the exciting gifts, and b) if you pay for something, even with gold tokens (that you somehow paid for) - is it still a gift?

Not as long as me I bet! I just had a look at the reverse of the instructions, and low and behold I have five golden tokens! Well, brown actually but who cares? They have what looks like a Roman Emperor on them (probably "Little Boots" with all the work I have to do). So, for 15 of these beauties you can get a "Chuck" balsa glider that flies like a real plane (but does it sound like a real plane?). For 30 you can step up to a 32-page "Book of Record Breakers" (land, sea and air), and for 45 a 20" "Semi-scale Glider" will whisk its way to you. Balsa and tissue construction! Shaped and pre-cut! Outstanding flying characteristics!

Hmm...and I thought maybe it might be a free kit.     :(

Bill

OK, the first pass at the wing fairings looks like it will work. Card stock and putty, my best mates.

Hard to see in the photos, but the fairing curves upwards where it meets the rear fuselage. The card stock I used was actually "plastic paper" which is 0.005in thick. I used the drawing to make a template for cutting these pieces out, and then liquid cement to attach to the wing trailing edge and the fuselage, holding it curved upwards in the process. It was then reinforced with superglue followed by the putty to blend in with the wing, etc. What the photos show is just the first pass, I still need to do another application of putty and the final sanding. But I'm happy so far.

Gawd, this thing looks nasty. Gotta get some paint on it soon...

I was going to build out the nose gear well, but that room is occupied by the weight needed to prevent a tail setter. I might be able to fake something in the shallow well that is there. We'll see.

Cheers,

Bill
