Progressing well Dave   Forgot to say that the engines are particularly nice.

That’s the main livery decals done. There weren’t any major fit problems although the fin decal was too tall and I had to remove about 2mm from the top. On the real aircraft there is a narrow strip of white between the dark blue and the natural metal fin leading edge. Drawdecal haven’t allowed for this. If I had trimmed the trailing edge of the decal it would have spoiled the proportions of the light and dark blue and trying to trim the leading edge would just have invited disaster so I took the easy route and turned a blind eye.

If anyone is interested OCS (Overseas Courier Service) and Allex (All Express) were both arms of ANA and JA8356 was operated by Air Japan yet another ANA subsidiary.

Next up will be detail decals and coroguard then small detail parts (pitots, aerials etc) before final assembly.

  • Skodadriver changed the title to ANA Cargo Boeing 767-300 in 1/144 *Completed*

That’s JA8356 finished.  It’s by no means one of my best models but by my usual standards it has been a very quick build. The change of kits from Zvezda to Revell was annoying but ultimately for the best. The Revell kit has several inaccuracies if you go looking for them but it’s an easy kit to work with and the end result looks like a Boeing 767.

Fitting the engines took longer than I had anticipated and required a bit of filling and re-finishing, not unusual with after-market resin engines. I got there in the end and the BraZ engines are a huge improvement on the Revell originals.

I added detail decals mostly from the Drawdecal sheet with a couple of items from the spares box. Coroguard is from an ancient Flightpath sheet.

Aerials, drain masts and pitots were sourced from a Daco p/e set originally intended for the Boeing 737. It’s not hard to make these items from thin plastic but brass is more robust and if I have some p/e I can adapt I’ll use it.

I also corrected the painting of the apu exhaust which I had got wrong first time round. One of the beauties of using Revell Aqua on top of automotive paint is that if you make a horlicks of it the Aqua is easily removed by careful sanding with 1500 grade wet and dry.

I deliberated (“swithered” as we say in Scotland) about whether to clear coat the model or not. I don’t routinely clear coat my models because in the past I’ve had issues with clear coats causing paint to craze, eating decals, drying flat instead of satin and otherwise misbehaving. For me clear coating has an uncomfortably high risk of going wrong and I avoid it if at all possible. With the large decals on JA8356 some of the decal film is more noticeable than I’m really happy with and theoretically a clear coat would help conceal it but in the end I decided to apply the “six feet rule” (i.e. does the model look OK from six feet away?) and live with it.

Thanks to @Col. for support and encouragement. I’m off to spend a bit of time on the Made in Ukraine GB. Depending on how things go there I hope to come back here with a second civil build, either a Singapore Airlines Boeing 737-100 or a China Southern A320.
