Dennis_C Posted July 4, 2024 Posted July 4, 2024 (edited) A very nice model of a truly unique subject. Couple comments on what it is. Original I-185 had two optional engines M-71 and M-82. M-71 was preferred by Polikarpov and he was pushing this version through, but M-82 turned out much more reliable and after installed to LaGG-3 resulted in an excellent La-5. I-187 and I-188 were the last attempts to rescue I-185 project in early 1943. These were the modification of I-185 with yet another experimental engine M-90. I do not see any real photoes of I-187 or I-188 so I suspect these remained paper prototypes. On 02/07/2024 at 20:29, georgeusa said: This one sunk more by political means than performance standards. Very hard to say. There was a period of Polikarpovomania in post Soviet studies where 'evil' Yakovlev was accused of killing 'excellent' I-185 project. Reality was a bit different as Yak and LaGG fighters occupied production lines before I-185 was ready for any production launch and in super difficult 1942 nobody would replace what was already in production and what was totally satisfying the needs of RKKA. On the other hand before the war I-16 was a blocker for any alternatives for quite a long time. I-16 was difficult in handling and by the end of 1939 was totally obsolete. Only removal of Polikarpov from Stalin's favourites made it possible to start trials of competitive projects of I-26 (Yak) and I-301 (LaGG). I-200 (MiG) was itself a variant of I-180 with axial engine and was not favoured by Polikarpov who was pushing his I-180. Project was passed to Mikoyan and Gurevich who were able to create an excellent design. Edited July 4, 2024 by Dennis_C 2

P.S. as I'm looking onto this I-188 it gets to me more and more like a lowback radial engined version of MiG-3. Would ve very interesting to put them next to each other.
