Redstaff Posted July 3, 2024 Author Posted July 3, 2024 Thanks for the replies gents, much appreciated 👍 @foeth where can I find out what the boat layout was as I intend to build it in the later configuration Many thanks again Ian 😀
foeth Posted July 3, 2024 Posted July 3, 2024 Haven't made a definitive list yet (on the to-do list) but from the repair after the Denmark Straight battle I have these notes: Missing (presumed destroyed), 1x45 ft FMB, 1x 27 ft Whaler. Damaged beyond repair: 2x 25 ft FMB. Damaged: 1x45 ft FMB, 1x 25 ft FMB, 1x 30 ft Motor Cutter, 1x 27 ft Whaler, 1x 45 ft Motor Launch (light type) and 2x 14 ft Dinghies. After the battle there's a standard 35ft fast motor boat on the far left side on the boat deck (might be the replacement for the destroyed 45 ft fast motor boat); one of those is still on pics when she is camouflaged so she still carried at least one 45ft version. 1

Does every pom pom have it's own Mkiv rangefinder therefore I would need 8, but I can only account for 4 (2 on each side in front of pom poms) 7 off 20mm Oerlikons that will have PE from Eduard kits to spruce up? I assume they're all single barrel? 1 off 40mm Bofors (according to kit instruction) but haven't got a clue where this is or if it is ok or not? 5.25 turrrets - I just dressed them up with the Eduard set and kept the kit barrels. Pom Poms - I bought 6 eight barrel versions from Black Cat (they come in 2's) - I didn't know the X turret was 4 barrelled - we'll keep that between ourselves MkIV rangefinders - in the kit, there are 4 (2 either side of the fwd superstructure) - I replaced them with Micromaster items HACS Directors - 4, 2 on upper fwd superstructure and 2 on the rear structure - again Micromaster 20mm - I personally think the plastice parts are great, including the shields. However, if you feel inclinded, the Eduard shields are nice. 40mm - The Eduard set has nice parts to dress up the kit item and replace the 'tub' as well. Hope that helps 1

Thinking postage costs and delivery times could be expensive and long respectively Are there any UK model shops / sites that stock these brands, or do I need to go direct? Many thanks Ian

Many thanks Ian Hi So I order direct - whilst I don't think Micromaster have a UK distributor, I think Starling Models sometimes have BlackCat stuff. For the 6 pom poms from black cat, it cost about £7.50ish shipping. Micromaster charge around the £16.00 mark each time i've ordered from them. Cheers

Redstaff Posted July 5, 2024 Author Posted July 5, 2024 So it begins I'm gradually gathering all the bits around me ready for a build probably starting after the summer hols. as I tend not to do much modelling when the weather is nice First to arrive was a set of metal 14" barrels and a book from E-bay to get a little insight Kit hopefully arriving from Jadlam tomorrow and the wooden decking is on a slow boat from China Will look at the etch over the weekend, Hanants seems to be the best deal at the minute and I think I've got a gift card/voucher thing somewhere 🤔 Then I need to decide exactly what 3D printed parts I need and place orders with Black cat and Micromasters 2

For about three seconds. 😁 Sometimes the guilt trip lasts a little longer - today I helped my wife pruning hedges and bushes (shock/horror), ready for the council green-waste collection. 🙂 I'm looking forward to your build commencing, but only in suitable modeling weather. 🙂 Regards, Jeff. 1
Modelholic Posted July 5, 2024 Posted July 5, 2024 Jeff, Good job you put 'hedges and' in that post. I don't feel guilty at all about modelling when the weather's nice. It's been quite nice today and I must admit no modelling was involved. Trying to decorate before moving house does that! But! The room being converted into a home office (really a MODELLING ROOM!) will not help me change my mind about doing this hobby when the weather's nice. Maybe I'm just trying to buck the trend. Or maybe I just think 'model time!' Tom 1

Redstaff Posted July 10, 2024 Author Posted July 10, 2024 One downside I've discovered about building model ships is getting the kit into the house past SWMBO under the radar 🤣 This is a resume of the conversation What's that? You don't want to know It can't be a model it's too big It's a model ship Why? Because I wanted to I give up.... I know it'll cost me somewhere down the line 🤣🤣 3 1
Rich75 Posted July 11, 2024 Posted July 11, 2024 Looking forward to seeing this underway, If you haven't already looked I recommend you go on the IWM website for photos of her. There's some fantastic pics and it really is a go to for WW2 RN ships, and this book is pretty useful for some background to the class in general and covers the major engagements they were involved in. 1

Thanks Rich I have seen some iwm pics, need to do a bit more research. I've got one of those books on order plus the Shipcraft 2 King George V class with loads of tips on modelling the class. Not had time to have a good look yet Ian 😀 1
Redstaff Posted October 3, 2024 Author Posted October 3, 2024 Time for a little update I think Since the last post I have been gradually gathering bits and bobs to prepare for the coming Winter build I have gathered the following to add to the kit Wooden deck from China Metal barrels for the 14" guns Metal barrels for the 5.25 turrets Eduard PE sets x3 Black cat quad pom pom Black cat 20mm oerlikons Micromasters octal pom poms Micromasters Mk IV pom pom directors with 282 radar Micromasters Royal Navy HACS MKIVGB with 285 radar All I think I need now is the paint, probably the set from Sovreign, but it's going to be a long build with loads of little bits and bobs to assemble long before I'm needing paint, so I'll order it fresh nearer to the time Just a quick primer question, which primers (airbrush preferred) do you guys use on the 3D printed stuff and the kit plastic on with the etch and metal barrels added? Ian
robgizlu Posted October 3, 2024 Posted October 3, 2024 Hi Ian. I use Mig Ammo "One Shot" primer which I do dilute with Mig thinners approx 3 : 1 primer to thinner. It'll still dry every so often. I prime plastic and PE metal with this and also 3D print products. On occasions I've been lazy and sprayed 3D products without primer and all has been fine. The one primer exception is resin hulls. Despite (what I thought was adequate) cleaning I've had paint lift. I now use bicycle degreaser and use Mig "AStand" primer for these. It was formerly Alclad. Cleaning the airbrush needs solvent such as "Sprayaway" for these paints. Hope you do a WIP - sounds great HTH Rob 1

That or go all in with weathered with some amount of multi-hued touch-up. 2
