Sd.Kfz. 9 (FAMO) with Sd. Ah. 116 + damaged tank

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

My Centurion Avre is not yet finished, but I like having a few projects on the bench. Even though this one will be a huge project. 😉

A few weeks ago I attended Militracks 2024 in Overloon, Netherlands. Two FAMO half tracks participated. That gave me the idea to build a scaled version of it.

A version with a heavy crane (I think it's a Bilstein crane):

And the "regular" one:

So I went to my local hobby shop and got this kit:

As the kit is a bit older, I got some aftermarket stuff too:

(I might get some resin tires for the trailer as well)

The trailer could carry loads up to 22 tons.  So my plan is to build something like this. Half track, trailer and a damaged Panzer IV:

I yet need to get the tank, but first I need to focus on FAMO and trailer anyway. 😁

Thank you guys!

Haven't had much time today so I only assembled the Maybach HL 108 engine.

So far I really enjoy this kit.

Spent like an hour to remove the plastic grill:

Replacement part:

Is it worth the effort? Well, not sure. 😉

I as well assembled the front suspension and the wheels:

A bit more progress.

I spilled some ca glue - thankfully super glue remover exists. 😅

I think it adds some nice details to specific parts of the model, but it's not 100% necessary to get that PE set. 😉

That kit is already top-notch out of the box.

Great build thus far. Your rad grille adjustment looks fabulous.

The engine and chassis is coming together well too and the engine looks significantly  better than the 1/72 Trumpeter version. On this the face of the fan is the right size at the front but the blades extend back to the engine block and needed serious surgery to get them to look anything like a fan.

Some minor progress again:

(Those glue-remains need to be removed tomorrow)

It's a quite time-consuming build so far, but I'm really enjoying it.

Painted parts of the interior and applied red primer. It looks a bit too dark in the photo, but it's brighter in reality. 😉

Hello! High-quality work, I really like it. Before it's too late, I want to draw your attention to Tamiya's mistake. In its kit, Tamiya provides rubber tires for the trailer and the tractor of the same size, which is incorrect. In reality, larger tires were installed on the trailer - 13.50 - 20, and on the tractor - 12.75 - 20. In addition to what was written above, I am posting a photo of a wheel found last year near Rzhev from Sd.Ah. 116 from the 5th Panzer Division of the Wehrmacht.

Thanks for that information @Alpenshutze.  I'll check on my kit.

Panzer Art made some replacement resin wheels and tyres for the Famo and another set for the Sd-Ah.116 trailer, but have they also copied the dimensions used by Tamiya?

It's a pity I don't have access to this wheel now, I could take its measurements😒. I would also like to draw your attention to the fact that the tire has inscriptions on English, which means that the tire was originally intended for export, and then ended up in the Wehrmacht. Supplements from Panzer Art should be carefully checked, I once dealt with their wheels for the Sdkfz, when compared with the photo, they had absolutely the wrong sizes and font of the inscriptions😡

Thank you very much, Alpenshutze! 👍I'm thinking about 3D printing the trailer tires, so the information you provided will be quite valuable.

I have taken my Tamiya kit out of the stash,

One of the few benefits from being old is finding some aftermarket parts in the box that you have forgotten that you bought.  I had a set of the Panzer Art resin wheels and tyres in my kit along with a FC Model pair of 3D printed wheels for the Famo halftrack.  Here is photo, with the kit tyres on the left in black vinyl, they have just the 'CONTINENTAL' logo, nothing else, no size markings or other details.  In the centre are the Panzer Art resin wheels just for the Sd Ah.116 trailer (8 plus the spare)they are the same size, tread pattern and also only have the logo 'CONTINENTAL' on them, no other details or markings.  Lower right are the 3D printed wheels for the Famo, they are slightly larger (1mm) than the the kit and Panzer Art ones, they have a different tread pattern but have no sidewall markings at all.  Hope this helps with wheel and tyre options if like me you don't like vinyl tyres.
