Pterodaustro Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I'm currently working on Airfix's Ferret: I'm building it OOB as I like Berlin Infantry Brigade vehicles (and love the story of Erwin Schabe's school run!), but I was surprised to see that Airfix haven't included any formation signs for this vehicle. I'm OK for the brigade badge but I can't work out what the unit mark should be. As far as I know, the Ferret concerned belonged to 1 Bn, The Welch Regiment: can anyone help with the the right marking for them in 1961, please?
coneheadff Posted June 19 Posted June 19 I have the Tankograd Berlin Brigade booklet and will see if I can find something. Alex
Pterodaustro Posted June 19 Author Posted June 19 Thanks Alex. I should have said, I'm guessing a green square with a white "1" on it, but I'm no expert and I'd be glad of a definite answer!
coneheadff Posted June 19 Posted June 19 Unfortunately there's not much in the Tankograd booklet... But maybe those two links might help... Berlin Museum Imperial War Museum
Pterodaustro Posted June 19 Author Posted June 19 Many thanks for this - it's good of you to take the trouble 🙂. Those links both confirm that the square is red rather than green with a number (but I may have to guess what the number is). Thanks again. 1
Pterodaustro Posted August 18 Author Posted August 18 Just to provide some closure to this subject, in case anyone's interested... I was able to find a number of photos of the Ferret in question and of similar contemporary ones, and I'm as sure as I can be that the formation signs are the Berlin Infantry Brigade badge and a red arm of service square with a white "8". On the front, the brigade marking is below the fire extinguisher to the right of the left headlamp while the arm of service marking is between the right headlamp and the side light. On the back, they are to left and right of the number plate. Looking at pictures of Berlin vehicles through the decades, there doesn't seem to be much consistency in the placement (or even the size) of unit markings (although formation on the left, AOS on the right is the rule).
