Corsairfoxfouruncle Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 (edited) Hello Everybody … So I was thinking of doing an F4U Corsair single type build. Then it dawned on me how about a gull winged aircraft build. This includes Land, Sea, Inverted, and for @Adam Poultney sailplanes. Anything that has flown, is/was on the drawing boards, or historical sketches or prototypes by designers like Chanute, Langley, R.J.Mitchell, or Leonardo Da Vinci would also be acceptable. Following is a list from Wikipedia of the most well known military types. Land plane examples: PZL P.1 PZL P.6 PZL P.7 PZL P.8 PZL P.11 PZL P.24 Henschel Hs 121 Loire 46 Polikarpov I-153 Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawk Stinson gull wing reliant C-82 Packet transport C-119 Boxcar transport B-25 Mitchell Piaggio P.166 Handley Page HP.42 Inverted wing examples: Aichi B7A Blohm & Voss Ha 137 Heinkel He.70 Heinkel He.112 Heinkel He.116 Heinkel He.119 Junkers Ju 87 Stuka Vought F4U Corsair Yermolayev Yer-2 Fairey gannet Miles Master/Martinet series Seaplane examples: Beriev Be-4 Beriev Be-6 Beriev Be-12 Beriev Be-103 Blohm & Voss Ha.139 Dornier Do 26 Martin Mariner Martin P5M Marlin Piaggio P.136 Short Knuckleduster Finally but no less important are the gull wing sailplanes: Bowlus Senior Albatross DFS Habicht DFS Kranich DFS Reiher Göppingen Gö 3 Minimoa Lawrence Tech IV "Yankee Doodle" Lippisch Fafnir Ross RS-1 Zanonia Schweyer Rhönsperber Slingsby Kite Weltensegler Ikarus Košava Jet examples: Heinkel He.162 Heinkel He.P 1078 X-29 Gull wings as seen from above: (Hear me out if you look at these aircraft from directly above, the wing is in a gull shape). Vultee Vengeance Westland Lysander Nakajima Ki-43 Nakajima Ki-44 Prototype examples: Douglas BTD Destroyer Supermarine Type 224 Douglas XTB2D Skypirate Aichi B7A Ryusei Mitsubishi A5M first prototype XC-120 Packplane Northrup-Grumman Firebird Bonney Gull Northrup XP-56 Vultee XP-54 Vultee XP-68 If anyone knows of other aircraft types, please feel free to mention them. vppelt68 Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 I happen to have in my stash a Special Hobby Ju 87 D, with which I have been patiently waiting for a suitable GB to come and then hop in. Looks like that day has finally come . V-P 1

Karearea Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 I’ve got a P.11 dual boxing I’d be keen to pull out so count me in. I think a case could aaaaaaallmost be made for the B-25? Building one at the moment and it’s a little gull-ish.

Hello Karearea welcome aboard, Seeing as the Stinson reliant has a similar wing shape Yes the B-25 is allowed. It goes up from the center only to dip after the engines. RELIANT: B-25 Mitchell: Dennis
Marklo Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Absolutely, I have a Corsair in the stash but I’m sure I can find something more esoteric 😀 1

Marklo Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Well there is this the Northrop Grumman firebird. But me being me I’d have to go for the Bonney Gull…. 2

From the front it’s an inverted gull wing like a Stuka or Corsair https://i.imgur.com/DYe4xws.jpg as well as from above/below.

With that interpretation, add the Lysander As for what I'd build, one or more of PZL P.1, P.11, or P.24. 1

zebra Posted June 26, 2024 Posted June 26, 2024 Sounds interesting. Three more that I think would qualify are the Miles Master, Fairey Gannet and Piaggio P.166, all of which are in my stash, so count me in.

The Gannet is in, as is the Piaggio. I will add you and welcome to the build. Edited June 26, 2024 by Corsairfoxfouruncle 1
48-Alone-Is-Great Posted July 6, 2024 Posted July 6, 2024 My Curtiss Sparrowhawk needs a reason to be destacked. Does it make the gull cut? It's a tiny gull, but it's there!

I agree it is ever so slight but the Gull shape is definitely present in the upper wing. https://i.imgur.com/eqVSeba.jpg Ive added you to the list as a prospective sign-up. LorenSharp Posted July 9, 2024 Posted July 9, 2024 I have a Martin Mariner that might just fit the bill. Sign me up Dennis.

JOCKNEY Posted July 12, 2024 Posted July 12, 2024 Hi Dennis Great idea for a GB, I'm in. I take my hat off to you for remembering the Short Knuckleduster ! If anyone knows where I could find one, I'd promise to build it Cheers Pat

I checked but the only model I could find of the knuckleduster was a wooden carved desktop statue. I couldn't even find a vacuform kit so I don't think anyone has made one. 1
Keeff Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Well, I have the sum total of zero kits for this one in my not-a-stash stash, but will throw my virtual hat into the melee .... Keith 😁 1
flyboy2610 Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 I have a second Revell B-25 Mitchell that I was planning on building as a night fighter, dressed appropriately in gloss black. So the gull wing part passes muster, but what about the gloss black night fighter scheme? Never happened as far as I can find out. Still allowable? Count me in if so. 1

I can say it’s allowed as it’s a plausible idea. It had speed, maneuverability, carried a radar in some versions, and in its strafing firm could have as many as 14 guns aimed forward.
