Hello all, based on the below 10 categories, pick your number 1 for each.

I have broken the Fighter section into 2 to cover props and jets accordingly.

This is just me being curious as to what you all put as your favourites as I have with mine below!

This is also just a list thing. It’s not meant to be a forum punchup in any way, just a bit of fun.
I wont be able to produce any sort of table for this as

1:  time consuming to do so

2:  no lappie or pc to compile it on even if I had the time to do so!

3: no set timeline to end this!

All the best and as always, May the Force be with you!

I'll play along. Might have one or two different aircraft to the rest 😊

1/ Fighter - Prop - Hurricane

2/ Jet - Harrier

3/ Bombers/Ground attack - the mighty Avro Lancaster

4/ Trainer - DH Chipmunk

5/ Transport/Utility - not sure. Either the Dakota, Avro Lancastrian or Hercules

6/ Helicopter - Sea King

7/ Airliner - I'll move the Dakota from "Transport" to here 😇

8/ Civil - err... do civil registered Hurricanes / Spitfires count? 😊

9/ Aerobat - Blue Angles F-18 Hornet. Just nudges out a Red Arrows Hawk because the Hornet looks better in my opinion.

10/ Prototype/Demonstrator - TSR 2, with an honourable mention to the Fairey Rotodyne.

Ok, this is perfect for someone who loves to dork out over favorites. For some I’m going to list my top 2-3.

Fighters

1/ Prop - P-38 or F6F Hellcat

2/ Jet - F-8 Crusader, runner up F-101 Voodoo. HM F-4 Phantom, Draken, Viggen

3/ Bombers/Ground attack - jet: Vulcan B.2, prop: B-26 Marauder

4/ Trainer - T-38 Talon

5/ Transport/Utility - C-119 (mainly b/c of the AC-119 Stinger variant)

6/ Helicopter - RAH-66 Comanche. Or if only production aircraft, V-22 Osprey. I also like the Mi-24

7/ Airliner - Concorde, probably

8/ Civil - does the CL-415 count?

9/ Aerobat - Black Arrows Hawker Hunters. Looks so great in formations especially

10/ Prototype/Demonstrator

(not produced) - YF-23 Black Widow or the RAH-66 Comanche

I go by exterior design only, the history of a certain aircraft has no part in my list. If I wanted to build any of these below, it's because of their design, not so much of their history.

1/ Prop Fighter: North American P-51A or B Mustang; for me the framed canopy is cooler than the bubble, although the pilots might disagree.

2/ Jet Fighter: Lockheed-Martin F-22A Raptor; thrust vectoring, iconic stealth design, 2-tone grey camo, what more could you want?

3/ Bombers/Ground attack: Boeing B-50 Superfortress; just because of obscurity, the less well known younger brother of the B-29, but it still has that iconic nose design.

4/ Trainer: Nanchang CJ-6; my mechanic owns one of these, and there is a Yak-52 at my airport, but I think the CJ-6 has a better design.

5/ Transport/Utility: Lockheed C-5 Galaxy (not the Super Galaxy); do I really need an explanation of the largest transporter in USAF history? Preferably with Vietnam-era camo.

6/ Helicopter: Mil Mi-24; the front view, IMO, looks scary (cool kind of scary) loaded out with rocket pods.

7/ Airliner: Boeing 707; I just love how much bare metal is on the engine cowlings back then!

8/ Civil: Lockheed JetStar; a 4-engined business jet!? Sign me up!

9/ Aerobat: Extra EA-300; uhh, how many g's can this thing pull...

10/ Prototype/Demonstrator: Vought V-173; otherwise known as the "Flying Pancake". Ever even heard of this?

YES!!!! I watched a Jungmeister display years ago, which commenced with a VERY swift flick-roll on takeoff. It left a very deep impression.

Keep em coming guys but remember, its 1 of each category listed at the start! Choosing 3 per category is not what this was about! (1per)
Fighters get 2 as prop & jet.

Aerobats can not include f16/18 etc as they are actual fighters that do shows as aerobatic displays! On that, we are talking like Extra 300’s etc!

I am proper loving this particular forum as stated before, just gives an insight to what we as model makers and aviation fans think are great planes from either an historic or aesthetic angle!

Also to finish off, there have been some on your lists I hadn't considered, that in itself would have made a couple of my choices different, but either way I am happy with and stand by my top 10!

This is harder than I thought!

For the record "best" for me has been translated as "favourite" :D

I suspect many of these lists will show a regional influence, and mine certainly falls in that group. There are no Russian / Soviet aircraft in my list for example, but they'd be in 2nd or 3rd place in a lot of categories.

Fighters

1/ Prop - Spitfire mk IX

2/ Jet - Tornado F3

3/ Bombers/Ground attack - Mosquito

4/ Trainer - Alpha Jet

5/ Transport/Utility - DC 3

6/ Helicopter - Airwolf :)

7/ Airliner - Concorde (just beats out the 747)

8/ Civil - Lear Jet

9/ Aerobat - Pitts Special

10/ Prototype/Demonstrator - F-16XL

Posted

1/ Prop - Spitfire XIV

2/ Jet - Hawker Hunter

3/ Bombers/Ground attack - Avro Vulcan B1

4/ Trainer - DH82 Tiger Moth

5/ Transport/Utility - Dougl;as DC-3/C-47/R4D

6/ Helicopter - Westland Whirlwind/Sikorsky S55

7/ Airliner - Vickers VC10

8/ Civil - Beech 35 Bonanza

9/ Aerobat - Champion Citabria

10/ Prototype/Demonstrator - North AMerican X-15

(not produced)

If I did the list again in 30 minutes it woul;d probably be completely different.

Interesting things you put!

But the X-15 would classify as research item. Not as a prototype or demonstrator I'd say, ad it never was intended for large scale production.

Posted

There was no category for experimental aircraft in the list of suggestions but I thought experimental aircraft should not be excluded as some people find them were very interesting.

Three X-15s were actually built, so it was “produced” - in a limited way suppose.
