Hunter Rose Posted June 7, 2024 Posted June 7, 2024 Trying something a little different, I've had these for at least a year and were one of the main reason I wanted to start having a go at figure painting using decent brushes and acrylic paint to try and do them justice, but I've had so much fun with all the cool 3D print stuff thats available these have kept getting pushed further and further to the back of the list! They are the smallest thing I've done so far, the legion scale seems to be a little weird and hard to nail down from hunting about, but apparently its around 32mm. There are two in the box, one is running with a guy shooting his blaster, and the other is stood still with the rider looking around with blaster drawn. Started by getting them off the sprue (man haven't had to cut sprue in a while! Nice to be back to it!) and then there was just a little seam line clean up mostly on the tauntauns underbelly and arms. IMG_20240602_162540664 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I got the legs and arms on the tauntauns, but left off the top half of the heads and the rolled blankets for ease of painting. With the riders I got the arms on the shooting guy as he's fairly wide open with his pose so no problem for paint, but the other guy holds his blaster across his chest so I left off that arm and both their heads. IMG_20240602_164009889 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once parts breakdown was sorted I snipped some bits of paper clip then using my pin vice and super glue got them attached to some corks so I can hold them easily while painting. IMG_20240602_173629511 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I gave them all a blast of chaos black primer, and used some white lacquer paint through the air brush to bring out the detail and give a slight zenithal start point. IMG_20240606_200337245 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240606_201820755 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Thats as far as I've got so far, next up I'll get the brushes out and make a start on the fur, I've got another 3D print coming up at some point that involves a large wolf, so one of these is going to have an arctic wolf fur colouring as practice (so a dark ochre for shadow moving through pale yellow to a pure white highlight in only small areas the most in the light) Thanks for looking, more soon 10
Hopsing Posted June 7, 2024 Posted June 7, 2024 It's certainly challenging on such a small scale. Especially everything with fur and furs, which I don't enjoy painting at all. I'll be following this closely! 1
Hunter Rose Posted June 7, 2024 Author Posted June 7, 2024 Cheers Hopsing! Yeah I haven't had much experience painting fur but I've found it's easier to deal with if it's been sculpted well, its better to deal with physical locks of it rather than just a fur texture, I'll just keep my fingers crossed and throw myself at it! 1
Hunter Rose Posted June 9, 2024 Author Posted June 9, 2024 Cheers guys! Found some time to paint over the weekend so I managed to get more done. Started on the heads first, got the guy with the goggles on face done first. I did this in the same way I do skin on larger figures, bugmans glow base then cadian flesh for the mid tone and kislev flesh for the highlight with 50/50 mixes in between to smooth colour transitions. IMG_20240608_160432239 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And the flesh aound the eyes of the second guy were done, then I blobbed on some off white and irisis with the tip of the brush, and blocked it in with more of the flshtone to block it in and neaten it up. IMG_20240608_160452675 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240608_160836128 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240608_161149338 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I found this all quite fiddly and really had to concnetrate so I missed a few steps here as I was really concentrating and forgot to take pics! So for this guy I'm aiming for something similar to the standard hoth rebel unifrom, so used a mix of beige and cream for the material of the hat and his face covering IMG_20240608_164006474 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then painted the strap around goggles and his communicator headset grey and highlighted it and gave the goggles a white basecoat. IMG_20240608_164927208 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then painted the goggles themselves, I base coated it with dark sea blue and wet blened some moot green into the top half and when it dried I added a pure moot green highlight IMG_20240608_170058465 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So that head is done, so I'm sticking with this guy and movng on to his tauntaun. I Think I might go for a different non standard uniform for the other guy so I'll think about that while I do this. I want this tauntaun to have white fur look, so I started by giving him a basecoat of steel legion drab and then added highlights by gradually adding bone white to the drab to get lighter mixes, I did also add a touch of balor brown to give a slight yellow hue IMG_20240609_155159026 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_155801107 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_160205391 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_160211414 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_160756663 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then moved on to the final white highlight IMG_20240609_161910631 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_161926343 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_161956990 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then got the head sorted, gave the eyes an off white blob and then touched in a mournfang brown iris, the face and horns are bone white, with a little whte then mixed in for highlights. The face was the same except with a touch of pink mixed in. IMG_20240609_164130444 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_164142111 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I gave the tongue a base coat of mephiston red and then mixed in some white to give it a pink highlight IMG_20240609_164155227 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I want to get the head in place so I got the leather bits around the head painted too IMG_20240609_165833287 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_170633716 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_170647685 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Finding it a bit tricky to get decent pics done at this size, so I took a couple of shots by the window to try to give a better impression of the colours. IMG_20240609_171316198 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240609_170750260 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next up, I'll get the rest of the leather bits basecoated with rhinox hide. Thanks for looking, more soon 12
Hunter Rose Posted June 11, 2024 Author Posted June 11, 2024 Time for another little update Painted a bit more last night, started by sorting his face around his eyes a little, I'd painted some of the fleshy bits of his face with white mistakenly thinking there was fur there. I still had some of that colour on my pallet so I brushed it on and I'm much happier with how it looks. IMG_20240610_200006105 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Than I spent the rest of my time with the leather saddle and straps. For this I started with a base of rhinox hide, then use a 50/50 mix of that with doombull brown and then highlight with pure doombull brown and then just in some small areas for a very bright highlight I mix in a bit of trollslayer orange and use that. IMG_20240610_200026578 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240610_200433628 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240610_201105299 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240610_201122639 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then for all the little stud and buckle details, and the clasps on the bags I gave it a dark grey base, then a light grey on the light side before giving a small white highlight to look like metal. IMG_20240610_201818216 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240610_201835566 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240610_202011296 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240610_202020726 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats the tauntaun pretty much sorted, so next I'll get the riders body sorted. Thanks for looking, more soon 11
Hopsing Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 The leather harness is a great result, nicely painted, the tauntaun is also convincing, is there a winter base to go with it? 1
Pete in Lincs Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 I'm sure you're making up some of the paint names. But I love the sound of Trollslayer Orange! But what you're doing with these imaginary paints is looking really great. Very impressive. 1

Cheers Hopsing! The base they both come with is pretty poor, they're for gaming so just a plain circle, which is red for some reason. So I'm going to put them on one snowy base that I'll make myself. 13 hours ago, Pete in Lincs said: I'm sure you're making up some of the paint names. But I love the sound of Trollslayer Orange! Yeah I think whatever mushrooms they forage for before going to the paint room are not what they think they are! 1
Hunter Rose Posted June 14, 2024 Author Posted June 14, 2024 Had another couple of paint sessions, moved on to the body so started by base coating the different bits. Going for a cream/beige similar to the movie for this one, so for the beige I started by giving it a coat of steel legion drab mixed with some deathclaw brown, and the cream is bone white with just a touch of deathclaw brown. IMG_20240611_201628304 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240611_202801367 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then from there I just started making lighter mixes of the two to build up the highlights on the upper facing parts, and I painted the straps on his boots also. IMG_20240611_204228581 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240611_222754316 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The gloves are quite a light grey, so I started with celestra grey and then just made a lighter mix to highlight, I also did go back and make a slightly darker mix for the underside too IMG_20240611_222803929 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I got his blaster arm sorted, for the blaster that was just black with some mid grey and then smaller near white highlights, I also painted a red dot on the sight. This is also the arm that has the insignia on it, I did check out images of what it looks like, but I didn't stress myself trying to get it 100% accurate, just wanted to make so its recognisable for what it is. IMG_20240612_200238227 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240612_200223708 by Nick Frost, on Flickr For his belt I went with deathclaw brown, didn't want to do the same rhinox hide leather look to break it up from all the leather of the saddle. And I also painted the metal detail on his chest, again with black and highlights of mid grey and white, not sure if they are ammo or insignia but looked up a reference and got them sorted. IMG_20240612_201959418 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240612_201949788 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240612_202010933 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Couldn't resist getting his head glued on IMG_20240612_203315692 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240612_203329886 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then got his blanket/tent or whatever they are painted, went with green for the top one (because that snow is going to thaw at some point right??) for no other reason than to add a different colour as a contrast to the rest, for the smaller one I went in with doombull brown as a start point, again just to make it different to the rhinox hide leather I did for the saddle and will also do for the straps on this. IMG_20240612_203420546 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240613_195347354 by Nick Frost, on Flickr That was then glued in place along with his blaster arm. IMG_20240613_195957798 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And so thats one of the riders done! IMG_20240613_200025324 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next I'll switch back to the other guy, I think for him I'll do a han solo style navy blue upper body, with sleeves matching so it looks like one complete jacket. Thanks for looking, more soon 12

Hunter Rose Posted June 14, 2024 Author Posted June 14, 2024 The last time I did some proper snow and ice effects was quite along time ago, I did a little one for my Frost Goblin but I did a big snowy diorama with some Ma.K model kits about a decade ago. I'm not planning anything too crazy for these guys, I'll be using a piece of foam board so I can carve a rocky edge which I'll cover in my snow mix
Andy H Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Coming along nicely - I'll be following the snow basing with interest, I've a couple to do on my 'down the line' projects. 😎👍 1
Hunter Rose Posted June 18, 2024 Author Posted June 18, 2024 Got time to do some more on this over the weekend, started by base coating the other tauntaun. This one is going to be a blue grey building up to small pure white highlighted areas, so for the base coat colour I started with vallejo dark sea blue with just a bit of black to make sure its not too green and give more of a grey tone (dark sea blue is a great colour but its actually a very dark greeny blue) and I also gave the flesh/horn/claw parts a base coat of steel legion drab. IMG_20240616_145857833 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240616_145904742 by Nick Frost, on Flickr From there I mixed in more white (and touches of the dark sea blue to keep the slight blue tone to it all) to that mix to get my lighter tones that I used on the upward facing areas, building up to a final small white highlight. I cover up less and less areas with these steps (4 in total) so I'm getting a kind of fountain step effect that helps with colour transition. Also for this one as he has thick hair I'm trying to keep my brush strokes on the lighter side so I'm leaving some of the deeper recesses in the fur so the shadow colour shows through. It starts off quite subtle and was a bit of a swine to photograph to be honest! For these I used bone white and then did the iris/pupil with a dot of rhinox hide, I then neatened it up by going back in with some steel legion drab. IMG_20240616_152940811 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240616_153239540 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240616_153413203 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240616_153517640 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I began the highlighting process on the head and other flseh/claw bits by adding more and more bone white to the steel legion drab working towards bone white and then a touch of white in the mix for the final small highlights. IMG_20240616_153841370 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240616_154653381 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240616_154154704 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240616_154641497 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Like i said its a bit tricky to show up in the photos, here are some better ones to show the fur colour IMG_20240616_155029635 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240616_155022502 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240616_155402331 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I was very happy with that, to the point where it also made me rethink the first tauntaun a bit. I think I lost my midtone with the colour mixing, so I went back in with a colour between the dark and light to add my midtone back and then I strengthened the highlights on the fur but also on the rider too. IMG_20240617_141422145 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240617_142825950 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240617_142842299 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I'm much happier with that, I think I was concentrating on colour so much I lost sight of the light values. Only other thing I did was to get his head sorted too, for this one I'm going with dark blue and grey, did his goggles in the same way as the first guy. IMG_20240617_150255305~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240617_150317066~2 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So next up I'll get the leather on the tauntaun sorted. Thanks for looking, more soon 6
Hopsing Posted June 18, 2024 Posted June 18, 2024 Very nice progress, you have succeeded in reworking the highlights, this can also be compared well if you look at the pictures on flickr in better quality. 1
Hunter Rose Posted June 19, 2024 Author Posted June 19, 2024 Just a quick update, I've got the leather all done. Just did this in the same way I did the other one, I start with rhinox hide as a base, then cover most of that except the dark shadows with a 50/50 mix of rhinox hide and doombull brown, then pure doombull brown as the first highlight then I add trollslayer orange for a bright highlight and then more tollslayer orange and a touch of whitefor the final bright highlight in only a few small areas that are the most light catching. All of this is working gradually in smaller and smaller areas to still show some of the previous steps for smooth colour transitions. IMG_20240618_203627535 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240618_203641913 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240618_203648013 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240618_203700980 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I'm thinking for this one for a bit of difference Im going to leave off the camp rolls from the back, I also really like how the back of the saddle came out and dont want to cover it up! So next up I'm on to the body of the rider. Thanks for looking, more soon 5
Hunter Rose Posted June 24, 2024 Author Posted June 24, 2024 Time for another update, finally found time to get pics uploaded and sorted! Got the rider of the second tauntaun base coated with some night lords blue and then I used castellan blue in the mix to build the highlights. Want him to be blue and gray, so the trousers were done in a dark grey building up to light grey with the same inside his hood. IMG_20240619_220821815 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240620_200147465 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then just like the last one I did the clips and buckles with a black basecoat, grey midtone and then a small white highlight to give a metal effect, then I glued the head of the tauntaun in place. Oh and I forgot to mention I also did his blaster exactly the same as lastime, and for his boots I went for grey with light grey strapping IMG_20240620_201134437 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240620_201548585 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240620_201559159 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240620_201608697 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then with that, I got the riders head glued in place and juts tweaked a few of the uppermost highlights to make them a little brighter on the tops of his gloves, upper torso and hat, and then I got the little arm badge sorted too. IMG_20240620_201608697 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240623_195911726 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240623_195920495 by Nick Frost, on Flickr I then moved to the base for both of them, I want a snow base that has a rocky edge, so I started by cutting some insulation foam to get a two layered base, I then used a stanley knife to make horizontal cuts all around with just a few diagonal ones. Then using a stiff nylon brush I roughed it all up to remove bits from where its been cut. IMG_20240621_173018112 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240621_173228065 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240621_173539222 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240621_173546076 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then from there it got a blast of chaos black primer IMG_20240621_194001506 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Once dry I grabbed a massive brush and some black and white artists acrylics, and went from a dark grey to medium then a light grey for highlights. I wasn't dry brushing as such as it was all quite wet, but I was just usiing light stroked just to pick out the raised detail. IMG_20240623_200331339 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240623_200919264 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240623_201245227 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240623_222721503 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So the next step will be to mix up some snow and get the tauntauns in place and then it will be done Thanks for looking, more soon 6
Shotandshell Posted June 24, 2024 Posted June 24, 2024 Sorry Neil, I only caught up with this thread now that you’re almost done! You’re doing a great job here. Looking forward to see the finished models on their base. Mike 1
